Red Skies
Everybody Dreams
For Mathias and Annaline Taylor and their children out of West Ohio, moving to Texas meant starting a new life. Even if it was in the hot, dusty, cactus and thorn bush country of the West Territories. The air was clean there, and the land was cheap, and a person could make a life out there. Even if it was hard. Even with the droughts, and the indians, and the hard-rocky land fighting them every day, it’d be a life of their own. Not beholding to anyone, except themselves.
But then the red skies came, and the whole world changed.
Walk outside your door in the morning and you might find a forest, or a lake, or almost anything other than what you expected to see. And some people got lost, and some people came back. But they were different than they were before.
Some of them remembered.
And some of them didn’t.
For a lot of people though, it seemed like a second chance to do what maybe you had always dreamed of. You could start over again. You could do it right this time.
You could do something different than you did the first time, or the second, or the third, or…
But even after people got it, it wasn't always, what they was expecting.
Seemed like there was a price sometimes, to pay for getting that second chance.
And for some, that price would be too high.
