An intriguing fantasy novel combining the milieu of Redwall with the complex worldbuilding of Tolkienesque high fantasy.

The world here is developed with impressive care -- from history and government all the way to food and drink -- and truly gives a sense of a complete society that has existed long before the start of the story, aided by the author's vivid detail of the landscape and its inhabitants.
