This is how the world ends: The innocent kill. Those killers lead. That is the nature of war, which ravages the province of Evigönda. For a breath, there is peace, but the gods’ demands pull at the strings. Amos is a mystic who guards Bo, a seer who sacrificed her physical sight to see spirits. Together, they must use her judgment to harvest souls for the Reaping, a sacred

Thanks to NetGalley and Dexter Morgenstern for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
When I initially went to download this book, for some reason I thought it was a graphic novel (probably the very graphic-novelesque cover art). If it were a graphic novel, I think I would have liked this book more.
While I do really like Morgenstern's writing style, it is a bit dense and I felt that the descriptions of scenery and characters were a bit lacking, and aside from Amos and Bo (the mai ...more

The author was kind enough to provide a copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. Months overdue, here it is at last.
It has been my genuine pleasure to watch author Dexter Morgenstern's skills develop over the years. His technical, detailed writing is as vivid as its ever been, lending cinematic visual stylings to his action-packed scenes. This book has a brawl in nearly every chapter, and each is riveting and unique. Exciting combat has always been the author's strong suit, b ...more

This is the second book I read by this author and I can tell you that his craft has improved a lot since The Eternal Victim, a pretty awesome read all in its own way. Morgenstern has taken a detour from his usual genre of horror and tackled fantasy as his next challenge. A little birdy has told me he's already working on the next instalment of The Pious Insurrection, which makes it promising that he'll be a prolific author in his career.

The Reaping is the first book of the pious insurrection series.
It’s about two mystics who are forced to undertake a religious journey to reap a soul from every nation, but in doing so, they begin questioning their actions and inadvertently spiral the land down into chaos.
The quest is called ‘the reaping.’ Amos and Bo have to collect souls from each tribe and to take it to Nexus. Amos cannot speak, and Bo is blind. Both characters work really together attempting to save the world.

While I liked this book, I got confused. The style of writing is excellent. It just skipped around a bit & I got lost. (that is on me not the author)

There are too many things that weren't explained well enough for this story to make sense. Characters whose background/actions were unknown completely, with no explanation. Events happening without a good explanation. And then the editing needed more work.

Quite a rich kaleidoscope of characters and peculiarities. A rich fantasy world.
A bit too grim at times as well.
I liked the variety of ideas and the development of the story.
I really liked Bo and enjoyed her path.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

“Dexter is an entertainer with several passions: author of the popular young-adult novel, The Slender Man, as well as a musician, an actor, and a model.
Born in North Carolina, Dexter spent his childhood as a homeschooled army brat. That took him to South Korea, exposing him to a broad set of cultures, and then to Colorado where he volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol while also taking his first s ...more
