“Your mother’s opiates are coming from Jose Herrera’s distribution network.” My pulse races as my stepfather speaks these words. Because taking on the Herreras also means taking on Diego.
Reckless, and hardened by a volatile past, Victoria does not see a future with Diego Herrera as a realistic option. As their childhood friendship ignites, they find themselves on opposite sides of a bloody feud between the two most powerful families in Mexico City. And she’s a Moreno now—brought up to be the secret weapon nobody suspected.
But Victoria can’t deny the attraction. Diego’s commanding muscles, the coarse, dark hair of his solid chest, that rugged scar above his sensuous lips…
S.L. Hannah was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and moved to Southern California to pursue her love of single-engine airplanes. "An eerie silence engulfs the area. Like the silence I imagine engulfs you when you know that you’re at death’s door."
I’ve read a few reviews and they all describe this in the same way. This is a more intense and sexualized version of James Bond with a badass female lead character. And I agree with that fully.
Victoria is the female lead that we hope for in books. She takes care of business and doesn’t need a man to help her along the way. She can handle any situation that comes her way.
When Victoria and Diego get together, it’s like a bomb detonates. Things are always so aggressive and heated. And be prepared for when he speaks Spanish to her. Wooo!!
This is a super fast paced read and it jumps from one shocking scene to the next. Your mind will be working overtime trying to keep up. The scenes with Victoria and Diego are explosive.
I would grab a glass of wine as you enjoy this heated story. It doesn’t disappoint.
Victoria to me isn't a female James Bond, she's a killer on a mission for revenge. She's a kickass female in all things except Diego. Diego was once Victoria's love till family separates them for years. Victoria moved on to Renaldo. Tragedy happens to Victoria and Diego is back and wants her back. Diego wanted Victoria as much as she wanted him till his family interfered. He can't believe she moved on and now he'll do anything to get her back. S.L. this was a good read. It took me a bit to get into it but you finally hooked me to know what will happen. You have suspense and intrigue. The sexual tension between Victoria and Diego was built perfectly by you. The history of the characters to the present has twists and turns of an angsty nature, you won't know till you continue reading. ***Reviewed for Sweet & Spicy Reads, ARC provided in return for honest review***
This story will leave you wanting more hot friction between Victoria and Diego. The cover and the title is perfect for this sweltering book. Victoria knows how to kickass to save her family, but when the hot Spanish Diego shows up, she forgets what mission she was on. I love the friction between the two families. They can't live together but they can't live without. Hannah knows how to light the room up. She makes you feel the raging fire between these two characters that burn a fire from just one look. It will keep you up all night before you can finish reading it.
Victoria is a woman on a mission, shoot to kill then worry about the aftermath well, after. I have read reviews that call her the female James Bond but I don't agree with that statement, James Bond is out to do good for everyone where Victoria is out for revenge for personal reasons. The person she wants dead is Jose Herrera because he is the one that is supplying her mother with drugs that she cannot stop taking.
Now here's the thing, Diego, was and if you ask me still is the love of Victoria's life, is the nephew of Jose Herrera the person she wants to kill. Diego and Victoria were together for a while before their families tore them apart but now they hook-up whenever they can and boy can those two heat up the sheets!
Diego is in a precarious position between his uncle and his woman, who will come out on top? Will Victoria succeed in doing what she feels needs to be done? This books is roughly 100 pages of non-stop action, and plenty of sexy times to make you hot under the collar. This was my first read by S.L. Hannah and I look forward to reading more of her work. This book is unlike an others I have read in a very long time and I recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a strong female character that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. Happy Reading!!!

I wanted to give this story more stars I really did. But I felt I was missing something. I felt like I walked into the middle of this story and couldn't figure out what I was missing. I even went looking for another book thinking I was missing a first or prequel that went with this story. Nope, nothing. So I did read this book but I didn't enjoy it as much as I think I would have if I didn't have that feeling.
Reading the blurb for Hard Trigger had me very curious..I love all things cartel/organized crime related so I was excited to read this. With that being said I feel like I started in the middle of the story and I felt lost...I felt like I was missing something. I was very confused reading it. I really wanted to like Hard Trigger but I just couldn’t get into it. The only saving grace for me was Diego Herrera..he was so sexy and so macho. I looked forward to when he would pop up lol overall and sad to say this book was not for me.
This was one hot and steamy read. There was inching up to that point. You don’t get the slow burn you get from the majority of books. No, the author just simply put it out there and god do I love her more for it. It was truly a book of cat and mouse between the main characters. But you never knew who the cat was or the mouse. Which made it even more fun to read. Both making characters knew what they wanted and were willing to do what ever it took to get it. They didn’t care who they ran over to get it. They each had their own agenda and sometimes it matched but others it didn’t. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a hot steamy novel with a touch of dirtiness.
I really like romantic suspense books; I always want something extra with the hot sexy scenes! This book has some action-filled scenes and hot ones too. The whole families feud and forbidden love, did the story really interesting. It was really good to see a badass female lead. Victoria is exactly that; fierce, badass and ruthless when it comes to fulfill her tasks! She was described as a female James Bond but I see her more as a mercenary killer, kind of an anti-hero sided with the bad guys! What held me back from giving the book 4 stars was the end. The last couple of chapters felt a little rushed to me and left me feeling that the story is incomplete. I would really like to see more!
Hard Trigger: A Rogue Romance by S L Hannah My rating: 4 of 5 stars
First of all, I have to say that this book was such a surprise and completely explosive. There is an underlying raw energy throughout the story that refuses to be ignored.
The writing! I seriously don't understand how Hannah does it, but her writing just sucks you in. It is so easy to get lost in her stories. There isn't any rereading of the first paragraph, due to awkwardness. You are automatically pulled in from the first sentence with effortless writing that is straight to the point, but sophisticated. I also love that this book is not lengthy at all but manages to take on a lot of complex themes, from revenge to corrupt business practices, to murder plots and the most difficult, yet universal sentiment of all, which is love. To be specific, romantic love.
Now moving on to the characters. Victoria, the female lead, and Diego, the male lead in this story, are incredibly strong and unapologetic characters. Victoria is like a young female James Bond who will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She had a mysterious air to her. I like that she was interested in aviation and that she was a woman who did not deny herself any romantic passion. She had a layered background in terms of her nationality and family life. And Diego, Victoria's love interest, just oozed power and intelligence and had an insatiable passion for Victoria, making them the perfect match.
What makes this book special is that Victoria, the main character in this book, is not the typical heroine with a heart of gold. She does things that are shocking and that to some might even seem unforgivable, but still manages to make the reader root for her success. And despite some of the untraditional things she does compared to most female leads, she doesn't wallow in self pity or remorse or waits to be rescued. She goes for what she wants with an unwavering determination.
Besides the characters, I love the international settings that this book takes place in. The reader literally feels like they are on a risky ride around the world that has constant action and danger lurking around the corner. Victoria is originally from South Africa, while Diego, her love interest, came from a prominent family in Mexico. Together they make a very fiery and complicated and passionate couple. And if you add a certain underlying rivalry between their families, you have a really strong and intricate dynamic between them.
Any reader of Hannah can tell you, that as an author she doesn't shy away from taboo or strong topics. This book is intense from start to finish and the romance is fire! The energy is raw and sensous and insatiable between Victoria and Diego. So, I feel like this book is for anyone who likes an intense and untraditional romance.
The background and subplots in this book were like a mix of the series, Queen of the South/Reina del Sur and James Bond with a mix of Mr and Mrs Smith energy. I honestly felt like I could imagine everything I was reading as a film in my head.
Huge Kudos to Hannah, who really did her research in terms of the countries and nationalities that were mentioned. The hint of Spanish phrases in the book was a really nice touch. And as a Latina myself, I felt an authenticity to the characters and places and situations I was reading.
If you are not faint of heart and want to dive into a little danger and a passionate story, this book is perfect for you. I'd recommend it to people who like action films, strong female characters, and intense and complex romances like that of J.A. Redmerski's 'In the Company of Killers' to name an example.
Hard Trigger is not your ordinary romance. Far, far from it.
Centered around the Mexican drug trade, it tells the story of Victoria, a woman who has chosen to enter the dangerous world of her stepfather's drug business. When she discovers her father was murdered by a childhood friend's uncle, head of a rival family's drug cartel, she does everything she can to get her vengeance, even when that vengeance could cost her the only man she's ever loved.
It's a very violent and graphic book, about a very violent and unforgiving business that ravages everyone who enters it's path. There are no knights on white horses or shining Navy SEALS here and the HEA many or may not be happy. Victoria is a once naive girl who learns terrible secrets about her family, her childhood friend Diego's family, and her stepfather's family. Those secrets drive her to terrible acts. Her single minded desire for revenge could cost her everything she loves, wants, and needs, including her life. That theme drives the story to it's ending and keeps the reader guessing as to what will happen next.
The romance part is well done. Victoria and Diego at first seem like ships that are thrown into the same storm, spending short bursts of time together only to be pulled apart and a wall of hate built between them. Despite all the powers that try to tear them apart, they keep finding ways to be together and their feeling don't change.
This is not a book to read for a pleasant afternoon at the beach. It's violent, blunt, and could hit home with some people. But it's also one of best written independently published romance novels I've read in years. S.L. Hannah is a storyteller, and she's telling a hell of a story here.
This author is new to me and it’s always good to find new authors, especially who write your favourite genre-romantic suspense.
Victoria is an extremely determined young woman, desperate to kill Jose Herrera. Herrera is just as determined she won’t succeed, naturally! He heads a drug cartel out of Mexico City while Victoria’s stepfather is the head of the other leading family p, however, they are on opposite sides. Diego, Jose’s nephew, once Victoria’s best friend, is everywhere she is, thwarting her attempts to murder his uncle.
This short book is fast-paced with lots of action and the female lead, Victoria, is a very strong, scheming woman who makes all sorts of plans and back up plans...I’m sure she would fit in really well as one of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ in a movie! The believable part is that not all of her plans come to fruition or quite how she hopes they will go but boy does she do due diligence when researching her next ‘project’ and plan of attack. Diego, now he seems all types of..well..yum! So dark and delicious but yet you can’t be sure about him.
I will admit to my heart pumping with fear because of Victor and her daredevil behaviour, I literally sat on the edge of my seat at times as she goes into an almost suicidal situation. At other times things were very different with Diego and Victoria getting very hot and heavy in all manner of places! 🔥 However the story is based around these two things- Victoria’s action-packed situations and Victoria and Diego’s passionate scenes- and really that’s it.
This book has very little over 120 pages and it has an action to die for! And… it almost happens, I mean, not you …. But people, I mean characters. OK, I’ll shut up know!
Really now, for a short book, it has some crazy events happening that will keep the reader hooked on page turning. It happened to me at least. There is some (SOME!) tension between the main characters, they want to be together but they can’t because their families won’t allow it. However they constantly fight for or towards each other and they hang to their feelings to be able to trust one another.
I loved the amount of detail we have in “Hard Trigger” and I liked the characters. The author built their background really well and managed to create strong personalities. Victoria is one badass woman. Her courage is matched only by the feelings she has for Diego and those feelings could burn cities. I loved them both!
The only thing I would complain is that too much of the story is told and not lived in the book while we read it. I wanted a bigger book, one that could capture more of their childhood and more of the conflict between the families. I wanted the inside scoop on one of the most feared family in Mexico. I wanted a tiny bit more!
But that does not mean this book is not worth your time! It’s one incredible story that will make you a prisoner of its covers. It is my first book by S. L. Hannah and definitely it will not be my last, for she has a lot of talent with words. 4 put of 5 stars!
A short action-packed tale. Diego and Victoria have a rather unconventional relationship, we are lead to understand that they grew up as friends together but fought their attraction for each other as they both battled with family rivalries. Victoria takes the modern day strong independent woman to a new level and is after vengeance again for those who have wronged her family. Diego tries to win her over and convince her that their love can overcome the family feud.
With the click, the door to my suite latches shut, and the rules of our engagement change from cautiously polite to dangerously familiar. his hand massages the tension in my neck, sending shivers down my spine to my lower back where his other hand is resting. I yearn for him to tug down my zipper to the same spot, but I know that’s not what he’s here for right now.
I will keep this short and sweet as there is absolutely no point in beating about the bush…this was superb. I could bleat on about how I thought that Victoria was quite simply awesome and how much of a shame it was when her and Diego were separated but it doesn’t make much of a difference because without the detail…which I will tell you now that you’re going to have to read for yourself, it would make no sense to you! I loved that Victoria was bada**, on a one-woman mission that she was not going to be deterred from. Diego was the guy that was absolutely perfect for her and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back…and he just might have too! With a clever plot that is very carefully constructed, I thought the author left a fabulous trail of not just angst but also attitude throughout the whole book. I bought into the characters and also into their personalities, their plans and their passion. Super book, very highly recommended
Victoria is out for revenge, and no man will get in her way. Yeah, this is a heroine that I can get fully behind, as she needs no help from a man to get it done. Although, there a few times that Diego comes in handy on the down low, but unfortunately, a bloody family feud prevents them from being together. So they light the sheets on fire, and off she goes with guns blazing, while he "tries" to keep an eye on her. Yeah, it's a complicated situation, that kept me turning that pages, with twists that kept my f-bombs dropping. I really enjoyed S.L. Hannah's talented writing story, especially her heroine who kicked a** & took names first & foremost. My one issue is that I wish it had been longer so I wouldn't have been confused at parts, because so much was going on at a really fast pace. Anyway, I'm excited to see who Ms. Hannah's next amazing heroine will be, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
3.5 Stars Review by Amy W. Late Night Reviewer Up All Night w/ Books Blog
S.L. Hannah had me drooling with this cover. After reading the blurb for Hard Trigger, I was intrigued.
Victoria and Diego are separated by their families and actions of those around them. Their thoughts of love are left behind, until they meet again. The passion burns hot between them still, but they are on different sides of a war neither started.
The story itself was intriguing, the writing well done. But there was something missing that had me not quite connecting with these characters. I think that more depth to the characters and possibly extending into a longer novel would allow for the connection to the reader to be made.
Overall I enjoyed the role reversal and the potential that the story has.
Ok.... Where do I begin? A dangerous fiery, no messing about kinda woman with a score to settle? You just know its going to be good.. S. L hannah has delivered that woman we all know we truly are deep down inside.. Passionate, determined and powerful! From the first page I was entrapped... There's action... There's violence but by jove the heat is present too! Diego and Victoria have history... History which refuses to be erased and when together they light up... Like literally the pages feel warmer! Action packed with a steel boned story which will keep you on your toes... My evenings will never be the same again!
SL Hannah is a new to me author and o really love to read books by authors I've never read before. Hard Trigger was a well written book. It's short and fast paced. Victoria and Diego have known each other as children till their families separate them, they go on to meet later in their lives, but they are on opposite sides. While Victoria has plans of making Diego's Uncle pay for his deeds, Diego is busy thwarting every thing she does.
Would I try this author again? Sure I would. At times I was not able to connect with the characters, but that's probably because the book itself is short, so it's not easy to write in depth about the characters. This was an enjoyable read.
-By Vanessa
I really enjoyed this book, I would have loved to see it as a full novel and not just a novella. But SL Hannah managed to jam pack this with action. I loved Victoria- she’s an incredibly strong woman whose mother married into a mexican cartel. Diego was the first person to friend her when she got to the country. Their love grew but had many plans from within their families that got in the way of their love. I loved how Victoria didn’t cave for love, she continued her revenge plan until it was done to only have to go and find Diego, as he got sick of chasing her down. Would love a 2nd story of these two.
This novella is a quick read and entertaining with its strong heroine, Victoria and dark hero, Diego.
Victoria as a character is not believable but then she is an ‘action’ type of heroine who knows all of the best ways to kill, maim and dispose of someone...anywhere. Diego has more mystery to him and is a little bit more believable..just a bit. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like these characters because I did and they were definitely explosive between the sheets as well.
A fun bit of make believe just like an action based movie.
I was intrigued by the blub for this book but once I started reading I quickly felt like I was missing something. I even went to check that this wasn’t the second book in the series and I needed to read book one first. It isn’t a second book. The story its self is good. But, I just felt like it picked up in the middle. The more I read the more I felt like I was missing the beginning of the story. The book isn’t very long. Maybe she could make the story longer and fill in the missing bits. Overall, the story wasn’t bad but could be better.
Wow! This book is not what I was expecting! It's got that James Bond feel to it but with a female's point of view which is perfect. It's steamy, suspenseful, action packed, and well-written. It was intended to be a short story but Hannah turned it into a longer novel... The only critique I have is that it could've been longer! I would've loved more depth on Victoria's relationships and past. That being said, the author was still able to to give enough information to make the current situation understood; there was still fluidty to the story and depth to all the characters. And seriously, so steamy 🔥
I was given a chance to read this novella and I can say it was an intriguing read. I loved Diego and how much he tried to protect Victoria. And I love that she is a badass who doesn't need a man to save her.
The story it self is quit fast paced and at times I couldn't keep up, but I still liked it as a whole. I have to say I think the Spanish is why I'm giving it 4*

The character Victoria is on a mission and nobody is going to stop her. That is until Diego comes back. There's bad blood between the 2 family's but the sexual tension is stronger and they want each other. The history between the 2 characters has twists, turns and a definite page turner. I was blown away when her dad told her that her mother was into drugs and getting them from another family. I would definitely recommend this book.
✨3.5 stars ✨ I love when an author takes a female heroine and can make her into this amazing vigilante. Victoria was definitely a heroine that you want to envision yourself as. This is definitely a second chance romance, as things are reignited with her last flame, Diego. I’m not going to lie-this was super hard to follow at first. In my opinion, I’m going to dismiss it as the fact that it was simply just so intricate of a plot. If you find yourself struggling through the first part of this book, hold on because it will definitely be worth it. It’s definitely a romance packed with suspense, and Diego was absolutely swoon worthy. This is definitely an author I’ll keep on my radar.
3.5 I loved the idea of this badass, take no prisoners, passionate killing machine of a woman. Victoria is definitely all the above. However I was into her and Diego until I realized how incredibly toxic they were together. I mean this is no fairytale at all and it has that crazy mob feel but.... he's a dick lol Had issues with Victoria's disguises but I'm gonna let it slide. I will finish by seeing that the fifa sitch was just an odd end.
Victoria is a sassy thing, “we both got what we wanted,” I say. “And if you hadn’t interfered tonight, we both would have gotten more. Now let me out.” I found Diego to just be perfect I loved that man I wished Victoria would have just done some different things with him, the man was caring in his own way and Victoria just came off cold to me at times.
