I hate the term "Subverting expectations" due to its overuse in recent blogs, vlogs, and articles but damnit if this book doesn't do just that at almost every bend.
There's a lot to unpack here. This is a volume of about 40+ chapters (1000+ pages) which translates to roughly 1/3 of the complete story. Without getting into details of the actual plot and story, which you can easily read in the synopsis section, I can't help but to say that this story holds a special place in my heart and seems kind of personal. There's a lot of things said between the lines in its satirical parody of other comics out there, but more importantly the entire compendium brings up many disturbing subjects that don't have a clear answer.
The writer takes a more absurdist approach to the story telling and feeds you answers that the MC chooses, but doesn't ever offer a definite solution to the issues being raised. Though I tend to get sick of these types of stories, Invincible has a way to pull you back in with another juicy conflict before you can dwell too much on the problems at hand. This pace ramps up the plight of the MC and the meta struggle the story presents.
The artwork is much like the subject matter of the story: Simple yet viscerally graphic. What seems like a PG Justice League story at first, the comic soon sobers you up with a smattering of gore and shocking violence. I'm not saying this is a bad thing by any means, but the comic tends to view itself (either sarcastically or not) as a family friendly comic as a whole. I think it's sarcasm.
All in all, this comic has been placed at the top of my list as one of the top 10 greatest comics of all time.
