Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is yet another fabulous addition to Tonya Duncas Ellis’s Sophie Washington series. I recently was introduced to Sophie Washington in earlier books and I have enjoyed every one of them. Mission Costa Rica is probably my new favorite. I love that Sophie’s family and friends chose to go and help others in another country who truly need it. Quite an adventure for them! Sophie is introduced to a new character that has a little problem swiping things that does not ...more

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is an educational adventure book for children, grades 4-6, written by Tonya Duncan Ellis. Sophie and her little brother were thrilled to learn that they would be going to Costa Rica with their mom and dad for spring break. Her dad had volunteered to be part of their church’s efforts to get badly needed medical and dental care to the residents of that country. Sophie’s dad was a dentist, so he’d be doing fillings a

Sophie Washington: Mission Costa Rica is a book apparently aimed at children aged 7-13 - and is certainly written in language appropriate for this age group. The story itself is fun and engaging, and the characters are surprisingly well-developed for a book of this size and style. Being a part of a series is beneficial in this regard, as this has given the author time and space in which to develop individual personalities - an aspect of the book that will engage young readers. I would recommend ...more

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand it is a delightful story for middle grade girls. It has everything going for it in a children's book. However as an adult, I am thinking of how likely it would be that someone would allow their 11 year old to go to a foreign country without them, especially when one doesn't appear to be a U.S. Citizen. The activities seemed a bit extreme when traveling with other people's children. Also, I have ...more

This was my first Sophie Washington book, and I’m eager to read more. I’d describe Sophie as an down to earth girl who’s about as real as one can be. The author does an excellent job of pulling you into the story, and building suspense along the way.
I particularly liked that Sophie and her friends got along so we’ll, and the realistic way she and her brother got along.
I have friends that have lived in Costa Rica, and know dentists that have done exactly what Sophie’s dad did, and all was accurat

Excellent story!

This series is adorable. I read the last book Hurricane and enjoyed it. I also enjoyed this one too! The writing about Costa Rica was so vivid I thought! Between the descriptions about the wild animals and the food and everything else I felt like I was there. I really like the main character Sophie as well as her friends. They represent real girls to me that a young reader can relate to and each showed different personalities and interests. I also appreciated the message of helpi

In this sixth book of the Sophie Washington series, Sophie's family heads to Costa Rica for Spring Break. While Sophie's father offers his services as a dentist in a free clinic, Sophie, her brother, and two of her friends spend their days doing jobs for the clinic's mission organization. They make friends with a local girl their own age, encounter a monkey who develops a liking for hair accessories, and find plenty of time to swim, explore, and have adventures. In Mission Costa Rica, Sophie and ...more

I received this book through the First Reads giveaway program.

A cute book about a young girl's mission trip to Costa Rica with her family and friends. The characters are well developed and the story line moves along at a nice pace. Some Spanish words are interspersed in the story which add great cultural content and educational background for readers without them feeling that they are having information overload. Same goes for geographic and ecological references.

A fun book for elementary reader

I think this is my favorite Sophie Washington book.
As with the others, it's well written, the pictures are nice, and it can be used to teach your kids helpful life lessons without shoving it in their faces.
I just felt that this one was a lot funnier than the other ones were; the others have been more of things that everyone can relate to, for the most part - things like competitions at school, competitions with siblings, and to an extent, natural disasters. But, this one was more fun because it'

This book was well written and the characters were well rounded and believable. Sophie fights with her brother whines about the chores but at the end of the day, she takes pride in the family's accomplishments. When Sophie Dad is asked by his church to go on a mission to Costa Rica, he decides to make it a working vacation for the family and allows Sophie to invite her friends. What kind of adventures will they have?

This isn't my favorite Sophie Washington stories. The story is still part of a good series and it provides a generally good message. There were parts of the storyline that made me feel it was unrealistic.
