I’m a huge fan of one sitting reads. Two sittings are good too, but basically a book I can finish in one day. This one took several and was happily enough well worth it. After all it’s a book 10 months in the making, since that’s how long it took this very British man and his wife to circumnavigate the globe, turning mostly left as the title promises. For a professional armchair traveler like me (sans armchair) this book was a delight. A travelogue of great detail, plenty of photos (sadly render ...more

Pros: good simple read about travel. Only paid $6 for the book.
Cons: The writing is not high caliber and glad I only paid $6. A travel memoir should be about travel and the author should not inject their political opinions. I was good until I got to the chapter on Vietnam. The author's opinions about the Vietnam war are not relevant and unfortunately not accurate.

His statement "As a final note that reflects the injustice we see in so many poorer countries, the chemical companies that manufactur

With thanks to the author for the copy received. I've always enjoyed a travelogue, they are the only type of non-fiction that I read but I have never read one that has so much detail or which has visited so many countries. I was familiar with only one of them and coincidentally we were in Melbourne at the same time as David and Helene. Like them, I recommend that you pay a visit to The Lanes if you go.
It was evident that they both had a wonderful time and that the destinations they chose were t ...more

I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

I was fine reading this whilst they were travelling around South America.
Unfortunately after leaving South America, I then started to get bored and found it very monotonous.
Would have been far better if the book had been shorter.

“I’m pleased to have been able to enjoy reading about David and Helene’s adventure, reading about the people that they met along the way. But far more I enjoyed reading about all the places David and Helene visited.
The glossy pictures with over 100 stunning photos in this book are amazing, I can’t seem to pick my favourite but I do really adore the photo where Helen is creating with a stick in the sand a sign saying Merry Christmas, which was their Christmas c

I was sent this book by the author in exchange for an unbiased review. As someone who has always enjoyed travel writing, in particular Bill Bryson, I was only to pleased to accept.

Turning Left Around the World, I thought, is a bit of a quirky title and something that certainly stands out. However, on reading the author's blurb I realised it's actually referring to those who turn left (into first class) upon entering a plane. Guess who's never travelled first class ... So with that in mind, this

I was contacted directly by the author on this one, and am so glad I was! I really enjoy memoirs, particularly about travel or repatriation or the experience of living (even if only for a specified duration) somewhere "other". I am not a terribly adventurous traveler myself. I am fond of my mod-cons, my things, and my rules of engagement - and unusual or adventurous travel is not terribly compatible with those things. But I am FASCINATED by other cultures and lands where things operate under ent ...more

Turning Left Around the World by David C Moore is a travel memoir of David and his wife Helene’s experiences traveling to several countries around the world for almost a year. In this book, David writes about how the idea for the trip came up at the time of his retirement. The couple had traveled to Europe and Scandinavia before, so they decided to go traveling to other places around the globe where they hadn’t been yet. Thus, with the help of a travel agency to cu
I really liked the concept of this book. Its non-fiction which I liked and its about a mature couple with older kids that determine to jet around the world for nine months. Their path is charted by basically turning left (or going to the country to the left). I liked the places visited and if Im honest although its a super quick engaging read, I kept stopping to google things to see what they looked like or what the history behind it was. I liked that the author took time to describe certain thi ...more

This book is a winner! David and Helene’s mega post-retirement adventure is a wonderful blend of what the best travelogues encompass. Having been to all 15 countries that David and Helene experienced during their 10 month journey, I felt the essence of each country fully again. David displays a talent for balancing historical and geographical information, cultural dynamics, vivid descriptions of world famous sites, meaningful encounters with locals. His engaging and flowing writing style makes f ...more

Adventure of a lifetime

The opening quote, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do, than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. sets the stage for this grand adventure. It's a whirl-wind adventure by Moore and his wife, as they document their travels through the stories and photographs. Now, the photographs don't just tell

About a year ago, I won this book in a giveaway. It languished on my bookshelves for months before I decided it was time.

This book defies description. Part history, part memoir, part travel guide, David and Helene decided after his retirement that they would travel the world. From Great Britain to South America. From there Australia and New Zealand and on to the Pacific Rim, the Moore’s travel 15 countries in ten months.

This will be a book to return to, and I will. Highly Recommended 5/5

A fascinating travel book unashamedly aimed at the well heeled, who habitually turn left to the best seats as they board the jumbo jet, but it speaks just as well to those of us on tighter budgets. It works on three levels: It's an interesting tale of wonderful experiences, it's filled with lesser known facts about the finest destinations on Earth and above all, it inspires the reader to make that special trip. It's also written with knowledge and humor. So many extraordinary places they went. I ...more

Turning Left Around the World allows you to go on an epic journey without leaving your armchair. It's part guidebook, part memoir and simply an immersing and interesting read.  If you love to travel, or read about those countries you've always dreamed of visiting, then you'll enjoy this book.

The book is divided into different sections, with each section devoted to a country that David and Helene visited. It's in an easy to read and enjoyable format, and what's more, a host of wonderful photograp
