For the majority of her teenage life, Aijae lived in her head, writing fanfiction about boy bands. In college, she meets an eccentric pair of friends who immerse her into the Los Angeles, emo music scene. But when she is noticed by Memorable Edition’s adorable lead singer, her dream life turns into a nightmare.

Determined to work through the heartache and gossip, Aijae put

Edit: This will likely be deleted on social media (twitter) once I mention it, but I think its important/significant since I can't stand this behavior. But since I posted this review, the author has gone on social media and stated that I had no right to review her book because I haven't finished it but subtweeted me. Like I mentioned at the beginning of this review, I hate DNFing and I thought about returning to this book. For that behavior, I don't think I will be giving my money to someone who ...more

Spoiler-free review:

One of the first things that struck me when I started reading Love from the Barricade was its honest tone of voice. It’s still the word I’d use to summarize the book were you to ask me to give you a one-word feedback of the book: it’s refreshingly honest.

Its narrator, Aijae, is shown growing up over the years- from her young teenage years to her late twenties. The novel shows us an authentic image of a girl growing up lonely but with a love for music and bands (some that stay

Love from the Barricade portrays the growth of potentially ‘skugly’ boyband fangirl Aijae into a ‘gorgeous’ young woman who must mosh her way through her chosen music scene to embrace the destiny of love and fulfillment that she craves.

Through a montage of entries that span more than a decade, the first-person account of Aijae (pronounced AJ) teems with texture that enlivens the characters and scenes of the novel. I enjoyed traveling alongside Aijae as she fought herself and others to reach the

Relatable, accessible and fun, Love at the Barricade explores the world of fan fiction, boy band obsessions and the gig industry, which becomes the pinnacle of main character, Aijae’s existence.

The book moves through a non chronological structure, whereby we track Aijae’s teenage experiences with fake friends and band member crushes, across several years, as she tries to form a presence online as a music journalist.

We are offered Aijae’s life at home through one window and her life at gigs with

This book is breathtaking. There's no other way to describe it. I was swept up in Aijae's storytelling almost from the beginning. The storytelling is simply AMAZING. I couldn't put the book down!

From Aijae's false starts with all of her friends to her fanfiction to her obsession with ALL of my FAVORITE punk bands, I was LOST in the story.

Granillo is a fantastic writer and so true to her characters. Aijae's voice is so real and raw and incredible that I spent most of the book thinking she was a

Good characters, a little difficult to get into at first but good story

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and LibraryThing (thank you!) in exchange for an honest review.

I’m actually kinda bummed that I couldn’t give his book a better rating, as I was so stoked to have been selected to receive an ARC of this book from LibraryThing. The subject matter is right up my alley, having been a total band groupie/geek in my late teen/early adult years. However, I had a hard time following the back and forth date structure of the book, and once I’d finally got

DNF at 31%.

While I appreciate the juxtaposition between and inclusion of both Aijae's YA-age fic-writing phase where she can only dream of meeting (and marrying) her favorite boyband members and her (New) Adult-age music journalism where she actually has industry connections to both further and complicate her fangirl lifestyle — and I'm sure plenty of people who were/are into the music

Love From The Barricade has so much content I can relate to; From feeling like a social outcast, nights and shows that make you feel born again as if anything were possible, to relationships that leave you wondering if this is as good as it's going to get.

Aijae is just like everyone else trying to make it in this dog eat dog world. She just wants to find a path to happiness.

As someone who is obsessed with a lot of bands, this book hit a chord with me. Waiting outside for dubious amounts of time,
