This book gives a brief history of the time period and the music that was chanted/sung/played during these times, along with references for the recordings of the music that people have tried to faithfully reproduce. I did not look them up, so I don’t know if they are still accessible.
I am not a music expert (have had lessons in piano and guitar) and this book was very useful to me. Every once in a while, they went to a musical level/lingo that I was not familiar with, but very few times.
It is a very accessible book.
It is a great book if you would like to know briefly about Medieval and Renaissance music.

I was not able to finish it, because it was due at the library- checked it out before Christmas, but got through most of it.

This book was really disappointing. It is super dated. Almost all of the recordings that it recommends have been out of circulation for decades. The info about the medieval and renaissance period is pretty good, but even that is a bit dated. If you're looking for a book about medieval and/or Renaissance music, this book is not for you. I would definitely look for a more recent book.

Dated, now. But still a good resource for recordings of early music. Especially for the vinyl collector.
