This book is full of small details that outline very plausibly the kind life that early northern coastal communities may well have endured, harsh and in thrall to the seasons.
Unexpected plot twists, feats of endurance, and warm and open relationships fueled my interest until the end, which was somewhat confusing and unsatisfactory.

This is one of my favorite books. Been awhile since I read it, but I will pick it up again soon. Maybe due to the Alaskan backdrop, but mostly because I was tranported back in time.

This is an awesome book - very gripping and detailed with accurate stories of the Inuit Eskimos.

I'm Elyse Guttenberg and I'm best known as an Alaskan fantasy writer

My first attempt at a novel was written at the kitchen table, on a portable electric typewriter I dragged from NY to Interior Alaska. I put the book in a drawer when it was done– the plot had holes and there was more middle than end– but I learned a lot about writing and a few weeks later started all over again.
