Maureen Ash was born in London, England, and has had a lifelong interest in British medieval history. Visits to castle ruins and old churches have provided the inspiration for her novels. She enjoys Celtic music, browsing in bookstores and Belgian chocolate. Maureen now lives on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
The Cornerstones of Freedom books, first published in the 1960s, are very popular among homeschooling families who are looking for brief overviews of important historical events or famous people. They are well-illustrated and only about 32 pages each for a concise, focused read.
I have found them to be a good, easy read. To my knowledge, they are fairly accurate (I’ve found one or two inaccuracies). While not my favorite historical series for children, they are still good and a series I would recommend.
Cleanliness: It mentions that Stowe received a package with a human ear in it; a few other slavery scenes are described emotionally but not as graphically.
**Like my reviews? I also have hundreds of detailed reports that I offer too. These reports give a complete break-down of everything in the book, so you'll know just how clean it is or isn't. I also have Clean Guides (downloadable PDFs) which enable you to clean up your book before reading it!
I didn't know much about Harriet Beecher Stowe before reading this short Children's Press book.
It was a good detailing (for a child) about Harriet's life. An adult would want at least a bit more detail of course - but for children... I felt it was just enough. The pictures & illustrations were fantastic & gave more insight to what was being discussed.
I have the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and now want to read it even more. This is probably a good, simplistic book before reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin".
