Fair and honest review. Well, I didn't really like this one, which is really tough to say because B.J. Daniels is an author I've read and loved for years. "Stroke of Luck" just wasn't up to her usual high standard. It has a great plot but the characters are stilted and one dimensional. I just wasn't feeling the happy childhood summer or the young teen angst that was the foundat

Gripping, menacing, and taut!

Stroke of Luck is a seductive, riveting whodunit that takes us to Glacier Park, Montana where the strong, confident Poppy is determined to show her unrequited teen crush precisely what he missed out on, and the easy-going, rugged Will is struggling to keep his visitors and those he loves safe with a killer on the prowl.

The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are complex, secretive, and intriguing. And the plot is a passionate tale filled with twists, turns, fa

3 " a book she hadn't read yet." Stars

Having read a couple of cowboy romance books from this author before I was excited to start a new series of the same ilk. Except what I got was a lot more than just romance. This was a crime drama and mystery moreso than a romance. The story engaged me and the characters were all well-rounded.

The author writes from the third person with a multitude

Will Sterling was asked by Big Jack Hanson, a friend of Will's late father's, to let him use the Sterling Montana Guest Ranch for a retreat in the off-season. Will was reluctant, fearing an unexpected snow storm, and with his cook sidelined with a broken leg, it was less than ideal. Will's brother Garrett suggests he ask Poppy Carmichael, who owns a catering business. Given what had happened when they last saw each other, Will is not exactly enthused but he needs a cook. It's only four days afte ...more
I have an affection for cowboys that knows no boundaries, so when I saw this book available for request at Netgalley, I jumped on it.  If you could look at my Netgalley shelf (and well, honestly, my physical bookshelf at home), you'd see exactly how much this appeals to me.  Also, I've heard a ton of good things about B. J. Daniels over the years and I thought that I should finally check her out for myself.

Anyway, I'm not sure where to start this review.  So much happened in this book!  I went i

I can always count on BJ Daniels to give me a great romantic suspense novel and that's just what I got with this book! A great way to start out the new year! It's also the beginning of a new series. Will is the oldest brother who has taken over running the family guest ranch. He has been looking forward to running the guest ranch by himself since his father passed on because he wants to make some changes. However, when an old friend of his father's wants to bring his company's employees up to th ...more

Reviewed on,
This is the first book I have read of B.J.Daniels and didn’t know what to expect, I admit I fell in love with cover and the blurb. So I was expecting a cowboy romance, but this was so much more. We have Poppy who has come back to Whitefish Montana to start her catering business.
Will runs the Guest Ranch Retreat, and its his first year and they have opened early for a special client. A four day work retreat, what could go wrong. The cook has broken his leg, and

B.J. Daniels is known for her line of romantic suspense with Harlequin, and I have enjoyed past books of hers. Stroke of Luck, which begins her new Sterling's Montana series, misses the mark in two respects for me.

First off, the characterization frequently felt "off." When I read a rugged cowboy thinking that a meatball is "divine," I figure that someone in the publication of this book wasn't paying attention. I don't know anyone in my life who would say "divine" about anything withou

Wil and Poppy had a young love years ago and it ended on a bad note, Wil broke Poppys heart and she was determined not to let him do it again. However things do not always go as planned. Wil is having as a bit of bad luck he is running his families ranch and his cook gets hurt so he needs Poppy I mean he could handle four days with her, and so he thinks. As these do spend time together things start heating up but do they really have time to devote to it because they are surrounded by danger and ...more
Never read the synopsis. Saw that it had a cowboy on the cover and knew I wanted to read it. Shallow, I know. But I’m not disappointed one little bit.

This was an enjoyable suspenseful book with a smidgen of romance sprinkled on top. Did I wish it had more than a sprinkle? You bet. But with the amount of action and intrigue happening, I probably would’ve rolled my eyes if there was. This story had no time for romance.

I am glad I read it and I look forward to reading to the next one in the serie

I love a good cowboy/ranching story! And this is definitely one of those! And the start of a new series, what could be better? That didn't sell you? Add in that it's a second chance romance - kinda. Now you're in? Good, go get it! February 19th - mark your calendar!

If you like mystery and intrigue in your romance, this is the one for you. Especially because Will, Poppy and the other guests of the ranch are forced together while there's a blizzard coming. And add in that Poppy wants to avemge her

I have read many books by B.J. Daniels over the years but I haven't really reviewed any on my blog.

I usually enjoy her books very much but I found this one lacking in the romance part. There was just a tiny bit of romance but the suspense was good. I did like the main characters.

Would I read the next book? It was good enough for me to read the next book in the series.

I am going to give this 3 out of 5.

When I’m ready for romantic suspense, BJ Daniels is my go to author. Her books are addicting. I can always count on lots of twists, turns, and surprises. She has such a gift for telling heart pounding and adrenaline rushing stories that you just can’t put down. And the evolving romance taking place in the midst of all the danger just makes the whole reading experience more thrilling.

"Stroke of Luck" is a romantic suspense/mystery that begins with a cooking revenge. Will has recently taken over his family's ranch lodge/retreat, and although they do not usually open it so early in the year because of potential winter storms, he is hosting his first group. When his cook breaks his arm and is out of commission, he is desperate for a replacement. When he hears that Poppy- a blast from the past- might be available as she has her own catering company, he decides to hire her.

I received a free, advanced copy of this book from This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

What started out as a cowboy second chance romance (at twelve years old, leaving in a nearby cabin, while her father worked for the forest service, Poppy Carmichael had fallen in love with the Sterling Montana Guest Ranch, Kate Sterling, who embraced the motherless girl and taught her how to cook and fifteen year old cowboy Will Sterling, who ignored her), escalated into a page turning murd

It's March in Montana. Usually the Sterling Ranch is not open for business this early in the year. The weather is just too iffy in Montana in March. Will Sterling is in charge of the family guest ranch following the death of his father. Will is reluctant to open this early in the season but an old friend of his father's has asked for accomodation there for a retreat for his employees. In honor of his father and the promised generous payment for their lodging Will agrees. There's one problem thou ...more
Stroke of Luck by BJ Daniels was a great read. I loved the cowboy/western genre with the romantic suspense genre. The book read quickly and well. Quite frankly, I have just found BJ Daniels and this book will not be the last.

Poppy Carmichael had a thing for Will Sterling when the were growing up. She crushed on him hard and as a 15 year old, he was not prepared for it, nor handled it well. But as we all know history does come back to bite up. Will Sterling in his first season of running the Ste

This was the perfect cozy read to cuddle up with in the crazy cold weather we've been having! Stroke of Luck is "romantic suspense" combining a cowboy romance with a murder mystery, blended together beautifully.

Will Sterling has agreed to host a retreat for a business owned by a family friend, despite the fact that Sterling Ranch isn't officially open for the season and there's a snowstorm headed to Montana. When the ranch cook breaks his leg only days before the retreat, Will desperately reach

Wil has been waiting to prove himself by running the family's ranch like his father had. He definitely got more than he bargained for after opening early for an old family friend. Jack is the owner of On The Fly and he wanted a business retreat for key employees. He got more than he bargained for also.

B.J. Daniels has presented a new romantic suspense to enjoy. Stroke of Luck is exactly that. Both Will and Poppy are lucky. Will needed a new cook asap due to his cook having broken his foot.  Poppy is lucky because she too, will get a second chance. Poppy has loved Will since she was twelve. However, fours days spread out and there is more than just sparks and tension on the horizon. The characters had a connection that hooked me from the beginning. This was my first book by B.J. Daniels and having read quite a few cowboy romances recently I was looking forward to reading this one - but unfortunately this one did not hit the spot for me, I expected more of a romancee but what I got was more of a mystery / who-dun-it plot.

This just wasn't for me unfortunately, I couldn't connect with the characters or undertand what their beef was with each other really. Will and Poppy hadn't seen each other for 20 yrs - 12yr old Poppy had fallen for 15yr ol

BJ Daniels nous a concocté une romance avec une pincée de suspense et une grand dose de thriller . Le style est addictif et les personnages semblent tous cacher une faille

He’s knows the weather is unpredictable but the money and his ex Poppy agreeing to be his cook is an offer to good to pass up. In this case you should know when something is to good to be true it’s never good. It’s a great start to the series but missing a bit on the romance. Captivated yet again by another suspense filled getaway that has romance woven through it. I also noticed it a bit more this time too that it came at just the right points with the melting part at the end in a fashion that did not have to have it told in pages that luxurious moment. What was supposed to be sweet revenge persay turns out to be something else and bites both Poppy and Will. Something else goes down that pulls the reader to the edge and keeps them poised there tighter and tighter as ...more

This is my first B.J. Daniels novel and for a romantic suspense, Stroke of Luck was nothing like what I expected. It included missing ranch guests, secrets, murder and a white-out snow storm. The plot line was over the top and the romance was lacking. The writing was good but the characters all fell flat for me. The only one who left an impression was Poppy with her love of cooking and friendly disposition. Also, there was v

It starts out at Will Sterlings Guest Ranch in Montana and goes from a broken heart from years past, to some wanted retribution, add in some mystery, and top it off with a few murders with a little romance in between! So many characters are interwined into this story.
