I found the book Die Back to have a fresh storyline. It is true that I have read characters in many different books go back in different lives with the help of different mediums such as through music, dream, consciousness, ring, or other devices. Many times these visitors also had company. But, here the visitor is chased by an evil spirit who follows him in every life and is bent to create havoc in the life of his loved ones.

To confess, I found the story complicated in the first chapter. The sec

A fresh story line that has a little bit of everything.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to inherit a pen that you can use to write yourself I to any time period, or place of your choosing? Addison has inherited just that! He uses his pen to write himself back in time. Each time he dies in the past, he is returned to the present time where he can write himself back in where ever he chooses! This story is twisty and turny. It has suspense, mystery, a little romance, a new world and well pretty much everyth

This book started out a little slow for me. But I’m glad it was an interesting topic and held my interest. Because once this book gets going it doesn’t stop. It talks about alchemical knowledge to create a dark future. It begins to bring in characters that you become attached to and interested in, wanting to know what is going to happen next with them.
The main character Addison Shaw inherits what looks like a simple yet fancy pen. Which turns him on his head, forcing him into a fight against th

Die Back is an intriguing book with a lot to offer to those interested in bloody plotlines and also time travel stories. It offers something a bit different from the usual ideas in time travel stories: this time, the object used to transport to a different time and place is a pen. And the traveler (or Inker, as they are known in the book) have to die in that period, in order to be able to get back to their own timeline. Of course, the butterfly effect is discussed heavily throughout the book.

Of all the fantasy novels I've read since my first Tolkien in the misty past, "Die Back" provides an opening hook second to none in wit and color. As Roman soldiers sack Alexandria, two time-traveling alchemists (known as Inkers) roam the halls of the greatest library of the ancient world, seeking a Macguffin to drive the plot forward, and just as it appears they will triumph, their way is blocked by a Roman centurion with a New Jersey accent. Overall, it's brilliant, and sets the tone for the s ...more

A very mesmerizing and imaginative book that really stretches and suspends your belief on what is truly reality. In “Die Back” there are these multiple time travel events that affect the future of the world as we know it and it is up to Addison, Jules and Nikki to fix it. The power of the pen and pens are the centre of this story and we see everyone being ruthless and power hungry to get the pens.
This story unfolds at breakneck speed where being trusting is a recipe for disaster.

I love time traveling plots, but it sometimes seems like it is done to death and there is nothing new to pull out of that particular hat. But, there comes a book like Die Back and it is clear that there is some life left in that premise. The trick here is that when our heroes go back in time, they can go back in a body of some person and they have to die in order to go back in their time again. It maybe doesn't seem like much of an idea, but it injects much fun and urgency into the plot and some ...more

Richard Hacker creates a captivating time travel fiction that takes Addison Shaw to different eras with the inscription of a magical pen. In Die Back (The Alchimeia), Addison inherits his father’s occupation and enemy, which he knew nothing about. He soon realizes his father had many secrets he kept from his son. As he and his partner, Jules, travels back and forth in time they realize that Kairos is closing in on them.

Die Back is suspenseful as Richard Hacker slowly develops his characters and

Recently, I read Die Back (Book One of the Alchimeia) by Richard Hacker. Unfortunately, it was not the book for me. As much as I enjoy a good fantasy adventure, I found this one a little too heavy-handed. The basic plot – the hero, Addison, must time travel to the past to make a correction for the present world has been done over and over again. And, when it comes to time travel, you have to get it right or else it will go very wrong. In this case, I enjoyed the time travel and world changing el ...more

Nicely written by a good quality, professional author, this fantasy is more a time-travelling actioner, which is exciting and engaging. Richard Hacker has a good knowledge of history, and has done his research very well, but, gladly, doesn’t overplay it – the focus of this book is the formula, with its 3 acts, its heroes, love interest and a ruthless super-villain, who craves no less than total domination of the space-time continuum.

The story is a good, interesting one; the ability of the “Inke

This book had a fascinating concept: in order to save his world, Addison and Jules travel back in time in spirit to affect changes that will hopefully be beneficial to their present. To return to their own time, they need to die in the past. Each change they create in the past, changes their present and each time they return home, they must ascertain whether the change was for the better or worse. They are fighting against their enemy Kairos, who is trying to that them both down and rewrite the ...more

Interesting twist to travel back in time!
The plot is really creative with twists into a travel back in times. With the help of his inherited pen Addison and Jules travel back in times into the past, with intent to make changes to past to improve their present world and save it. Anytime they make the change they need to validate and in order to return, they must die in the past. Interesting, but as always there is an evil soul Karios, who wants to destroy their world and disrupt their goals. The

Suspense, action, fantasy and so much more

Die back is a story that grabbed my attention from chapter one and never let go. I was pulled into this fast paced journey as Addison uses his inherited pen to write himself into the past, creating a historic self to fight Karios and try to find his real self while resetting the past changes he is responsible for. Each time he dies in the past, he will return to the present and write another venture into the unknown. I found the story to be excellent in

The book seems to be from another reality! The reader is immersed in exciting adventures from the first pages. When I read, it seemed that I was somewhere in another world. Thanks to the author's style and such a unique and interesting idea to put a book impossible. With each page, my interest grew, I wanted to know what would happen next. The book has a lot of events and actions that do not give you a "sigh." I love it very much when books make you think, and especially when there is something ...more

I really liked the beginning of this one, but somewhere in the middle it started to lose the larger story in the threads of the smaller, time traveling, ones - and that's where it started to lose me...

This is a great concept and an original take on time travel - which is becoming an increasingly uncommon thing to be able to say, given the proliferation of the topic practically into its own genre. The idea of the pens and traveling into the minds of the dead worked. It opened up almost limitless

Die Back, the first installment in Alchimeia series by Richard Hacker, is an intelligent and convincing blend of classic science fiction and historical reconstruction. The book deals with Addison Shaw’s time-travelling jaunts from the twenty-first-century back to ancient Alexandria and other places. It’s been six hundred years after a fifteenth-century scryer gained the alchemical knowledge to create a dark future in his own image. After death of his father Thomas Shaw, an inker: an individual w ...more

I received a free ARC of this from NetGalley in return for an honest review. This is absolutely fantastic, time travel, a league of time continuum protectors, the modern and the ancient. Well written, the action moves along with good pace. Thoroughly enjoyable, I'll look forward to book two in this series.
