This new book is so compelling that it cannot be ignored...The poems seem to have grown out of the earth itself...There is mastery of craft here, and no matter what one's orientation, John Leax's response to life in all its complexity commands deep respect. One rejoices in a talent that offers such enrichment.Chad Walsh'Christianity and Literature'

Seasons of the year, seasons of life, and seasons of the soul are brought together in this fine collection of poems by John Leax. I was grateful to have John as a professor in college and I deeply appreciate his poetry. I purchased Country Labors some time ago, misplaced the book, and recently discovered it in a move. Reading it was like unpacking a part if my past as John unpacked his. Earthy and real, these are poems of substance.
