Job Creation and Destruction

Focusing on the US manufacturing sector from 1972 to 1988, this study addresses the employer rather than worker side of the process, with attention to the relationship between job creation and destruction and employer characteristics. The picture that emerges is one of large, persistent, and highly concentrated gross job creation and destruction, with job destruction dominating the cyclical features of aggregate employment. This is a technical economics book. It is a refinment of the research that is (or should be) revolutionizing the way economists and policy-makers think about labor markets as dynamic not static.

ALl three authors are excellent, and I have tried to follow their research since first reading this the year it came out (as part of a PhD macro course).
