La Muse, a teenage African-American girl, is introduced to the reader as the slave of a Virginia family prior to the Civil War. Tasked with caring for her owners’ daughter and serving as her seamstress, she breaks the customary rule prohibiting slaves from learning to read and write by spying on the family’s hired tutor hired as he instructs the owners’ children and those from neighboring plantations.
