Bates may be considered one of the new stars in the horror genre, but these little novellas/short stories were more thriller than horror. Fun little reads, but not for three hardcore horror fans.

Fabulous. Terrific. I'm hooked.

Hi. My name is Monte, and I'm an addict. I am addicted to reading, to stories, to books, and now, to Jeremy Bates. His books and stories are amazing, and he is probably the best writer you've never heard of, by far. If you know who he is, or have read him before, then you wouldn't need to bother with a review, because you would know how great it's going to be. If, however, you've only read one of his books, or a short story, and are thinking, " I wonder if this will be anywhere near as imaginative, well written, exciting, or just plain good? After all, nobody gets it right a hundred percent of the time. " Let me just say, it is, and he does. If, however, you are one of the unlucky ones who have never sampled a taste of his talent... Oh, you poor, poor thing. Come on, give it a try. All the cool kids are doing it. And you won't be disappointed. It's incredible. It's amazing, and you're going to have a hell of a good time. Right up until the end. The only problem I have are the cravings. As soon as it's done, I inevitably want more. But, luckily he's still writing, and there's more to get! So, go ahead. Have a taste. You've got nothing to loose, and so, so much to gain. In fact, just tell them Monte sent you. And welcome to the Midnight Book Club!

I’ve enjoyed reading the World’s Scariest Places series by Bates and decided to give this set a go. I found the stories/novellas to be excellent. Well written as usual, and with very unexpected plot twists, which is always satisfying. Many of the stories went in directions I didn’t anticipate even slightly, which is such a nice change. My only comment would be that I didn’t feel as though it made sense to include the Taste of Fear book in this collection. It was a kidnapping/action thriller and not in keeping with the theme of the set. I read it, but for me it was long and dragged some as it just wasn’t what I got the set looking to read. Well written, but not in keeping with the horror theme at all.

Do not hesitate to pick up this book when you come across it, it is pure gold for horror fans...Every anthology fan knows it is ridiculous to think you can escape the inevitable duds that are mixed about in the good stories. That being said, there is not a single dud in this book. That is right. NO DUDS. The stories were fantastic with a range of genres within a genre. The last bonus story being a most welcome surprise. Most authors do not care to write in collections like these or there would be more of them around, right? Thank you Mr. Bates, I can only hope that you have another in progress! Btw, waiting impatiently for the next "Worlds Scariest Places" masterpiece to show up on my kindle.

A collection of short novellas and a bonus novel:
Black Canyon - 2 out of 5 stars
Run - 2 out of 5 stars
Rewind - 3 out of 5 stars
Neighbors - 2 out of 5 stars
Six Bullets - 1 out of 5 stars
Box of Bones - 3 out of 5 stars
The Mailman - 2 out of 5 stars
Re-roll - 1 out of 5 stars
The Taste of Fear - 1 out of 5

A couple were somewhat enjoyable, but most weren't that great. The novel was ridiculous, boring and seemed to be never-ending.

None of the stories were very "riveting", or even remotely scary. Your money would be better spent on a Lovecraft collection, or Stephen King, or even the original Grimm Fairy Tales.

This is a collection of horrific tales (some cringeworthy, some with some dark humor). Many of them had me thinking after I had finished the story. A few definitely surprised me with where they were going. Some I didn't like how they ended up (I was rooting for a happy ending even though it's a horror and that's often unlikely) but could still appreciate the writing. I have read a few of his other full-length books and I feel like I enjoyed these shorter stories better.

Black Canyon - This started out a little slowly but it was worth it. It definitely did NOT end how I thought it would and the "bad guy" was not who I had thought. 3.5 stars

Rewind - I really liked this story. It was a mystery at first and then it took a very sad and dark turn. Even though I didn't like how the "mystery" was solved, it was well written. 4 stars

Run - This was a decent story. Some of what happens doesn't feel logical to me, especially Charlotte's rationalizations. 3 stars

Neighbors - I really liked this one even though again it had a dark turn. It was well written and I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out. I just wish at the end we knew what happened to the one neighbor but that doesn't happen. 4 stars

The Mailman - This one was a bit slow. I didn't quite know where this one would go and after reading it I was still thinking about whether things would have played out the same or differently if Jade had made a different choice about the mailman (I think ultimately yes but Jade would have been more of a sympathetic character). 3 1/2 stars

Six Bullets - I don't really like apocalyptic stories but this one was interesting although not really surprising (never a happy ending in an "end of the world" story) 3 1/2 stars

Re-Roll - This was an interesting take on the future. You really didn't care about any of the characters but it was nice for some karma at the end. 3 stars

Box of Bones - Despite the title, I thought there would be more on the stabbing and being in the crappy hospital. There was a good twist at the end. 3 stars

This is my first exposure to Jeremy’s writing. I enjoyed all the short horror stories and found I was discussing them with others. He covers some really life issues like PTSD and other mental health issues that as result make good horror and even some gruesome like the Black Canyon story. The last story however was not of the same category and boring to my interest. Overall I am very interested in reading other horror by the author. He is creative in the twist with each of the horror stories added an unexpected layer or still surprising you with information you feel like you already had put together.

Jeremy Bates is one of the best authors I've ever had the pleasure of reading!

His stories are well balanced, and hold my attention, which is a real feat, because I have tardive diskenesia. The only reading that I can accomplish has to jump up and grab my attention immediately, otherwise I can't keep track of the characters and the storyline. I have been telling all my friends and anyone that I spot with a book, about Jeremy Bates.

Lame title - Exceptional short stories!

Seriously. If I had not just finished Jeremy Bates's excellent novels about The World's Scariest Places, I doubt I would have given this collection of shorts a second thought. So glad I don't always judge a book by its title because the short novellas contained here are just a shade or two different than any I have previously encountered. Read the first one....

The Midnight Book Club

After reading a few of Jeremy Bates Midnight Club books, fiendishly happy to discover yet another great story teller! In other reviews I see Mr. Bates compared to King, Koontz, Laymon...I get a total Rod Serling vibe from his books and loving it! Looks like dinner at my house will be late again...And thank you for the stories, as I often say, what is better than a good story?

Only one negative

I really enjoy Bates writing so I decided to give this book a try. I enjoyed most of the stories even though they didn't really feel "horror" to me. The only negative was the last story which was an assassin/terrorist plot which is not something I'm into and I felt like it dragged.

Could not finish it

The book started well enough but it threw me when the next story was a recollection of the past. It seemed to lose the plot and drag on. I tried to persevere, but the book was no longer enjoyable to me. Perhaps other graphic horror fans may like the collection.

Other subtitle: A collection of riveting murder mysteries by the new master of horror

This book opens with one of my favorite quotes:

‘"It isn't fair, it isn't right," Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.’
—Shirley Jackson, The Lottery

This author's writing is exceptionally creative, and scary! Every story is the kind that will make your eyes bug out. Enjoy.

I wouldn’t recommend reading some of these stories at midnight, or even in daylight as they are scary at anytime! Good character development and plots.

Decent collection of stories, not all short so this is quite a big book.
I like Jeremy bates as an author but I think these stories would have been better released separately.

It feels like several of the stories were written by a 16 year old who just got rejected by a girl for the first time.
