Fat Cats is the fourth book in the Dyed In The Green fiction series featuring Canada’s national park service. A more personal and individual story that is smaller in scope than the first three books in the series, Fat Cats is perhaps the most engaging novel in the series so far. Another great entry in the DYED IN THE GREEN series, this one focused on the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve and a story involving a cougar, invasive fallow deer, and John Haffcut (introduced in the previous book). Again, Mercer's writing continues to improve and his storytelling ability grows. The only issue I had with this book was the character of John himself, who was mildly annoying in his insistence that he was right and lying to everyone was the only way to accomplish his goals. Mercer does a great job of highlighting real world issues in a fictional story. His writing is engaging and quickly pulls you into the emotions of the characters. I stepped into the series with this book and look forward to going back and reading the earlier books and any future ones in the series.
Fourth in the "Dyed in the Green" series Mercer once again creates an enjoyable fiction based around a real world environment. I hope a fifth will be in the works soon.

To read one of Mercer's works is to stop being a tourist and see inside Canada's National Parks. The difficult (and questionable) path chosen by the protagonist in this work reveals a character less palatable than those in his previous works - making "Fat Cats" all the more intriguing.
