Shep has been dealt a bad hand in life. Halfheartedly raised by a cold grandmother and chronically ill following his deployment in Desert Storm, he self-medicates with alcohol and daydreams of salvation at the hands of women—ultimately landing on one woman in particular: Lila, the young actress he believes is his daughter despite all evidence to the contrary. I liked Kinney's first book Radio Iris a lot, but this was on a whole other level. From the first page I was engrossed with the character of Shep, and his little dog Lionel. The dog is an interesting character really. At times a comfort, at others a source of anxiety. I appreciated this deeper approach to exploring the experience of having a pet. And this is really how all of the characters are approached. She goes into them.
Also, I liked experiencing LA with Shep from Nebraska. I enjoyed gettin

Anne-Marie Kinney masters the art of telling the story of an interior life. In a landscape peopled by the unseen-- the homeless, the convenience store worker, the immigrant, the differently abled, the veteran, the child -- she makes visible the protagonist's, Shep's, day to day struggles with obsessions, chronic pain and loneliness all while capturing the ineffable quality of life on the North side of the hill, the San Fernando Valley. “If the days run together, is there more time or less, and if time is running out, what am I waiting for?”

Anne-Marie Kinney’s Coldwater Canyon takes you all over Los Angeles from a line of actors signing up to serve as extras on TV shows, to a tiny theater hosting an experimental theater piece, to a well-secured studio lot, guards running around with headpieces.

What a strange, endearing and beautiful novel. These are the type of LA novels I want to read all the time—stories that skirt the fringes of movies, love and agency. Everything in the main character Shep's life is so transitory that when he finally finds something to hold onto, it's not revelatory, but traumatic. Kinney's novel finds so much to love in the in-between spaces of LA.
