Ruby Learns to Wait is a nice story to help children understand why it's important to be patient and have good manners. The story is about a raccoon called Ruby who is looking for some food but because of his impatience finds himself in some unpleasant situations.
I wasn't sure about this book in the first place, we've not read or seen many books on patience but I do think it's something important for the children to learn. I was quite surprised at how extreme the situations Ruby found himself in were and this does make the book a little unrealistic. I think it would have been nicer for Ruby to have experienced consequences for situations children might actually get themselves into without patience.
I like how we see Ruby change throughout the book from being rude and impulsive as a raccoon to learning and accepting what the owl has taught him. The way patience was shown through the chillis was very clever!
The illustrations in the book are in a fun cartoon style and it is great to get to see how Ruby and those he encounters are feeling throughout the book. This is a good book with a great lesson for children to learn but I do wish it was a bit more realistic and relatable for the children so they could understand what they could do to be more patient and good mannered.
