i got to read it in the B&B in florence. there is a swap there and the owner has a library of his own. really helpful for my visit to florence and pisa.
Of four guides to Florence we used in our visit, my wife and I both found this the most useful. The descriptions of things to see were excellent, the section dealing with logistics and practicalities was shorter than in any of the others but more useful and the map was the one we relied on because it was laminated and so stood up to constant use.
Like all the DK travel books, the gold standard. Use Frommers to figure where you'll stay, but DK/Eyewitness to figure out what you'll see and do. This is the one to pack (but too heavy to carry around).
This is a great book for traveling through Florence and Tuscany. Great pictures, the author writes about every little town in Tuscany as well. Highly recommended!!
Disappointing. Read this as a prelude to planning a weekend in Florence. Found there to be insufficient information about what was to be found at the attractions listed and that much was omitted. Museums housing anything other than Renaissance, especially modern art, are not even listed. Everything can be reached by walking in this city, even the Pizzale Michelangelo with its stunning views is only a 40 minute walk from the city centre, yet no suggestions of walking routes are provided.
This is a gorgeous book as all books from DK Publishing are but this is super-gorgeous because it is a travel guide to Florence, Italy and Tuscany which are beautiful places. This isn't a practical all-you-need-to-plan-a-trip guide. It really shows you the places you will want to see in color. Italy, yum!
I like Rick Steve's books the best for practical and helpful information. I love these guides for their beautiful photography, coloured maps, and vivid descriptions. The Rick books are my practical manual and these books are my "souvenir" which I keep and can use for reminiscing after the trip.
I have more of the books by eyewitness to... Every time we are going to travel, I go to these books to plan our trips. Not only do they have beautiful photos that inspire a visit but they also give opening times and suggestions of how to walk as to not miss anything in major towns like Florence. I find the book extremely helpful, more so than other guide books.
Clear, informative, good maps and suggested walks. Plans of the major museums (not only ones like the Uffizi and Pallazo Pitti, but smaller ones like the Brancacci Chapel). Recommended restaurants and bars. Invaluable.
Great pictures and love how the neighborhoods and surrounding areas are segmented out, but I learned more from art and cookbooks about the city itself. More imagery than substance. Glad to get a good map and details on the rail stops.
The DK travel guide books have a great overview of a country or city. I love how they incorporate a lot of the history while keeping it fun and entertaining to read. Lots of pictures too!
