Deadwood #9

Gone Haunting in Deadwood

Rate this book
"Trespassers will be gutted and hung!" --Slagton's unofficial town motto spray-painted on the old company store.

Normally, not even drunk on a bet would Violet Parker go to Slagton, a creepy ghost town inhabited by those too stubborn--or deranged--to leave.

But a certain bullheaded Deadwood detective has a problem--his informant from Slagton has gone missing. When Violet is shanghaied into taking a hunting trip to the ghost town to search for the missing snitch, she stumbles into trouble that will take more than a double-barreled shotgun to escape.

Will Violet survive this new Hell that haunts her, or will she end up on Slagton's growing list of those "gutted and hung"?

First this is one of my favorite series. It’s right up their with Janet Evonovich’s Stephanie Plum series. Ann Charles gives us a glimpse into her life on Facebook. She makes me laugh and she must have modeled Violets twins after her own kids. Second I think this is the best Deadwood book yet. It was fast paced and funny. I’m so glad that Doc and Violet get more time together. It’s what I have been asking for. There is so much more depth to the characters. I don’t want to spoil anything so I will just say we get to see different sides of several characters. It’s always a fun read when I read any of Ann’s books.

4.5 Stars... This story becomes more and more interesting with each book... Violet, Doc, and the gang are laugh out loud hilarious while creating intimate relationships and friendships that keep these characters endearing and memorable... With each book, I find myself mesmerized by this world Ann Charles has created and as a result am eager and excited to engage in each journey with these fabulous characters... Keep them coming Ms. Charles and thank you for such an entertaining series:)

The Deadwood series continues to grow in depth, the characters becoming more nuanced with each addition.
Violet in particular continues to develop as she accepts her role as Executioner and Timekeeper, while remaining the hilariously accident prone, wild haired mess we have come to love. Cooper's growth as a character, as well as his evolving relationships, is quite satisfying.
There are lots of questions yet to be answered, promising many more late nights of reading ahead!
Ann Charles has once again penned an intriguing, exciting, fun and laugh-out-loud book. If you haven't started this series, you need to do so now! If you have but haven't picked up this book yet, what are you waiting for!

It was nice being back with all the familiar characters from Deadwood; but I didn’t have near as much fun as usual. The story this time around was slow and uneven...and overall left something to be desired. Either this was an ‘off’ book or I’m starting to lose interest in this series.

This is the best book yet in the Deadwood series! I have no idea how each one can be consistently better than the last, but they are!
Things just get crazier and crazier in Deadwood. More ghosts, creatures from the underworld, and seemingly more mysteries than Violet should be able to cope with! Add that to two growing kids, rogue family members, a hot boyfriend, a scary (literal) ghost town, and trying to figure out her job description's "duties", and what's a poor Executioner gal to do!?
Non-stop thrills, chills and laughs in equal portions for Violet and her crew of loyal friends/family; I already can't wait for the next Deadwood installment!!
Highly recommend!

Ha! Slagton! The place that gives even Violet sweaty palms.

With good reason, as it turns out. Or, you know, maybe not. Maybe she just needs to really know what's going on there to banish her qualms about the place for good. Just Violet's qualms though. Everybody else would still be wary and careful and sweaty-palmed around that place.

So. Slagton. Otherworldly beasties. Cooper having an attack of conscience (which makes him sound like he is usually morally deficient, which is NOT correct. He just took on a heaping helping of guilt for some of the things that happened this time around and Violet had to talk him out of it. Which is kinda weird unto itself.). Answers which lead to more questions.

You know, basically the usual for the feisty Executioner and her crew. We do find out more about how those Violet has drawn to her through friendship and such fit into her world.

In other words, Violet's life is complicated and ridiculously fun to immerse yourself in. She's got problems on top of problems and she has a gift for managing to wiggle her way out of almost any dangerous situation. GOOD STUFF.

Have you ever finished a book and just wanted to tell everyone to go buy it and read it? Well, that’s what I am doing right now! Gone Haunting In Deadwood definitely has got to be the best one yet in this series (until the next one comes out lol)! With so much going on, you will not be disappointed or bored at all. So much is learned as Violet, Doc, Harvey and Coop come together to solve a problem in Slagton and the excitement factor is knocked up ten notches. With this crazy cast of characters, the fun never stops! Especially when you add Cornelius to the picture who never ceases to bring more wackiness with him. Ann Charles brings her game with Gone Haunting In Deadwood for sure and has definitely upped the excitement factor. Thanks Ann for the laughs once again and for bringing one of the most enjoyable books I have read this year!

This time Violet and the gang are of to Slagton to find Coop’s missing informant. Mayhem ensues with ghosts, ghouls, new monsters, and a turf war. The relationship between Coop and Violet is “improving” from insults every second to insults every 3rd second or so🤣. Violets complicated life keeps getting more complicated but her relationship with Doc is improving, if only she can get rid of those pesky doubts and start trusting him.

Wow

The action never ceases. Poor Coop, he has to deal with so much. I love this character. There are so many cool characters. The women are strong willed and don't put up with stuff.

I'm looking forward to more adventures.

It's getting risky now
Great reading, great storyline, fun and adventurous. Violet and her family are in the thick of it now. Making contact with players in the other realms, delving into the darkness, and making deals with others and guardians. What a great series.

WOW

I think by far the best. I liked the tamed down sex left more to the imagination. I loved the story the way it moved smoothly. I loved the fuller development of the characters. All of them made strides in growth. I loved it so much. till you stopped. Now I have to wait and see what happens and it's getting hard to wait. It was a lot of fun and just enough scary to keep you jumping. Moving between dimensions was fun and entertaining it's a Damn good book. Now get busy and write what happens next so we can enjoy more. I absolutely loved it. It was GREAT!!!!! I think it is by far the most fun of the series and I liked the way the story moved along. It had it all adventure, scared stuff, different things and realms and blended them together very well. I really liked the taming down of the sex it was there but unlike past one it left more for you to imagine and I liked that a whole lot better. Perhaps my age I don't know it was more fun to think what was happening I didn't need it detailed. Wish I could give it m of re than 5 stars. Great book Ann

This series just keeps heating up! This is one of the best series I've ever read. The characters are so well developed, and continue to grow and change, that you feel that you exist as close friends. The storyline continues to get more and more complex. The humor has not dried up in the least. The romance between characters remain hot hot hot. Lastly, even the editing is superb. I always have mixed feelings about reading Ann Charles' books. I don't want to put them down once I start reading, but I don't want to finish because that means I have to wait for the next one to come out. This series even inspired me to travel to Deadwood and Lead to see where Violet, Doc, and the gang "lived and worked". Every Ann Charles' books are a must read. Every single one is unique, unexpected, and delightful.

The Deadwood Series is one of my favorites. I can’t wait for the next book. This series is witty, romantic, swearing happens, spooky and awesome. I normally listen to audiobooks but I bought this paperback and I took an hour to read the last 10 pages because I didn’t want the book to end. Start with book #1.
8/7/19 - I listened to the audiobook and loved the book even more. I think this book is my favorite of the series. If you read the series in order, you'll find this book really bonds all of the characters in a wonderful way. The humor is off the charts and so are the "feel goods". I'm looking forward to listening to "Don't Let is Snow in Deadwood". I've already read the book; however, Caroline Shaffer as the narrator is absolutely perfect for these zany characters. I can't imagine anyone else narrating these books. I'm patiently waiting for book #11.

Always a pleasure

I love reading the deadwood series, they are books in which real people find themselves in unreal and dangerous situations. Violet Parker is a single mum of twins struggling to make a home and provide for Her children. She has moved back to her old home in Deadwood with this in mind, has moved in with her aunt Zoe and begun working as a realtor but that's not all that is different in her life. Violet has discovered that the world is not as straightforward as she thought there are other planes of existence and creatures live in these planes there are also a lot of deadly supernatural beings who seem to survive by feeding off people in one way or another and its Violets job to kill them. Violet relies heavily on her lover "Doc" and friends Harvey, Natalie and Cornelius along with the love/hate relationship she has withCooper the local detective to help her navigate her way through the pitfalls and perils of living in Deadwood. What I love is Violet, she's a mother who struggles to maintain a normal family life while dealing with all the crazy, her struggles are all mundane getting the kids to school on time, being able to sell a house and keep her job, struggling with her image as she falls in love with Doc as the thirty something mum of 11 year old twins who has the stretch marks to prove it. She worries Doc will get bored with her as she is so ordinary but she's also amazing taking everything that her life throws into her path and dealing with it. Violet makes me appreciate how hard it is for single mums, the struggle they face daily. An amazing character.

I absolutely love this series! The characters that Ann Charles has created and woven into this hilarious mystery series are unique, memorable, quirky, and lovable. I am truly amazed at the story-lines this author comes up with as she pits them her characters against the evils of another world, and sometimes against each other. I love all of the characters in this series and love stopping back in Deadwood to visit with them. Life is never dull in Violet's world, that's for sure.

Gone Haunting in Deadwood is book #9 and one might think that a series that has gone on that long might get kind of stale and repetitive. But this series is anything but that. The relationships of the characters have grown and developed with each book—there is definitely nothing stagnate there. And Violet and her crew are constantly coming up against different creatures and learning new ways to conquer them. I have to hand it to Ann, she has one crazy vivid imagination!

I listened to the audio-book of Gone Haunting in Deadwood, as I have all of the other ones in this series. The narrator does an AMAZING job and I just love listening to this series on audio.

Author Ann Charles is at it again as she types her fingers to the bone to hammer out another Spooktacular, sexy, and hilarious adventure in Deadwood, "Gone Haunting in Deadwood"- Deadwood 9!
Nine books into this series and I am hoping that there will be one hundred and nine more!
Violet is new to her trade but learning fast as she and her growing band of supporters tread into the world of ghost, ghouls and "others" in Violets new role as " Executioner".
Oh, and don't forget the heat, as the flames are turned up with Violet and Doc Nyce's growing relationship and the scorching tension between Natalie Beals and Detective Cooper!
With lots of witty banter and snappy dialogue, this book is just another example of Ms. Charles' talent in storytelling!
Book Ten Please!

Great storyline with Doc, Cooper, Harvey and even Natalie gets in the act. Violet has her work cut out for her now that she is an Executioner in the ghost world. The imagination of the author is hilarious. Violet has some great lines and some quirky thoughts to contend with. Having Harvey tagging along with Bessie to get rid of the mutant griffins is just funny but some of it is sweet like Violet and Cooper seeing ‘eye to eye’ at least some of the time. Hot shower sex with Doc is beginning to show signs of a permanent relationship and his French Toast is winning points with Layne & Addy. Is there a marriage in the works? Time will tell. For now, her purple boots and war club will keep her safe. A great series. Get them all because your will want to re-read them.

Thank you Ann.

Three years ago I started having major health problems. Due to my condition i started slipping into deep depression. Nothing seemed to help, not my family who was there every step of the way. They kept me alive. Then one day in January I saw a post on face book. It was a picture of Ann and the Deadwood series. Of course I was smitten by her beautiful looks, but I have always been interested in Deadwood due to the history. I started reading the first book and I was hooked. The humor, the mystery, the way it is brought together. So, over the last five months I have slowly improved in health, mind, and spirit. The trip to Deadwood will be my second excursion(first did not go well). I am so looking forward to meeting this incredible person.

Once again Ann Charles is phenomenal. Violet is my favorite single mom ever with her village of friends and family helping with her twins.....can we say Viking swords and crazy chickens? I LOVE that Jane has gotten very vocal.....what is down in that hole anyways? And how she stops typing to stare Coop down. Poor guy sounds like he’s on the edge between pushy ghosts and the woman he’s obviously in love with tormenting him. And can we talk about Cornelius? Once again he kills me with his out there one liners and his crazy behaviors. I love how he can stop Violet in her tracks. Then there’s Doc.......oh Doc. I cannot wait to see what Christmas brings. You did it again Ann! I love it!

Another round with Violet

I gave this edition a four because Ann Charles is a good writer. But, I don't have the same feeling about the main characters as I did in the earlier books. Harvey just seems to be a fill in. And, I really liked him in the earlier books. He was funny and kind of a goofy grandfather. Cooper seems to take a more than front and center role, which is fine except his character is not as much fun. I liked the sharper edge to him, not the guy who sees ghosts. Well I understand why all the characters have jumped on the bandwagon to help Violet, I can't help but wonder who's next on her enemy to buddy list. Not everyone should be who they say they are. The storyline doesn't give us surprises anymore.

Just ’cause trouble comes visitin’, doesn’t mean ya have to offer it a place to sit down and take off its boots/Old Man Harvey

I am always so excited when Ann Charles releases a new book in the Deadwood series! She keeps me on the edge of my seat with Old Man Harvey's antics (shhh...my favorite character). I can picture Violet's wild hair and purple boots. Being the ninth book in this series, the characters are familiar to me. You either love them or hate them. You root for the good girls/guys and catch your breath when they are in peril. Some people love the fantasies with dragons and such, give me ghosts & zombies any day! #GoneHauntingInDeadwood #AnnCharles

Another excellent book in the series! Violet and Doc are about to learn that their relationship is more than just boyfriend and girlfriend. Doc is family in many ways and making it permanent has just gotten very interesting. Violet is now more than just an executioner, she is a timekeeper.
Cooper and her banter is humorous but their relationship is getting better. Harvey, Natalie, Zoe, and Cornelius are awesome as part of the team. Mona is full of surprises and Ray is still lots of trouble.
The plot/ mystery has lots of twists and surprises. I am looking forward to the next one! I highly recommend this book and the entire series! I give the book 10 stars!!!’nn
