This review is meant to offer constructive feedback to the author. I’m not here to bash the author, but I want to say I was shocked at the number of five star reviews this book received.
Now I can see where the plot twist at the end could have swayed readers to leave a 5 star review, however one good part doesn’t make the whole body of work good. There are several things I wanted to point out. The first thing was the editing. After reading the book, I’m not sure if it was edited or test read. I highlighted so many errors. At this point, my kindle version of this story is marked up so much that it looks like a first grade coloring book. I hope the author gets new test readers for the next book.
In addition to the editing, the book was just wordy. Sometimes making a sentence simple isn’t a bad thing and I felt this author over complicated some sentences. For Example: Chapter 16, location 1033, she wrote “Making my rounds, picked up all the money that was owed and headed to the warehouse”. This was an incomplete sentence. It could have just been said that he went to the warehouse to pick up the money. & the whole book is filled with sentences like this. (Frustrating to the reading experience)
Character development is a big thing for me. The character’s personality traits have to match up with their actions. Example: We have Spade. He’s a ruthless kingpin who murders folks and carves spades on the victim’s faces. Okay cool. He should be scary right? He should rule his organization with an iron fist right? Negative. He has his “best friend” who he honestly has no reason to trust in his organization. He’s constantly talking about how he’s been giving him second chances. What kind of boss keeps someone that he feels that he can’t trust in his organization? He’s not a boss. He’s just a man who sells drugs.
Then we have Shvonne. I’m not sure if the author wanted us to like her or hate her. But I’m sure she didn’t want the reader to feel indifferent about her. I will say the ending made me understand how she moved a little better but ehhh I’m on the fence about her.
Maybe I’m getting old or I like “old people” books, but there’s a difference between being hood and just simply being over the top. I think this is why I stayed away from most of this author’s work. Sometimes authors go so far left they end up messing up the things that are right. And sometimes people try to end up being different and it comes off ignorant or just too extra. For Example: (SPOILER) Shvonne first meets Bam after he beat up this dude. After the fight, a girl tries to be up in Bam’s face but he swerves her. Shvonne who he doesn’t know from a can of paint comes and punches the girl in the face. Bam kinda thanks her but says she’s not his type, but she can be on his team. Now everything don’t have to be perfect, but there isn’t anything cute about this. Another pet peeve that I have as a reader, is for there to be unnecessary POVs. Like Lala didn’t need one. She wasn’t even around long enough to have one. Plus, we coulda got all we needed about her from Gino’s POV.
Although this is a series, this had the ingredients to be a great standalone. If the relationships/characters were developed better, the plot would have been golden. The ending could have been a twist and we could have been done. Now, I’m lowkey sad that there’s a 2nd part.
**I do hope for future books, authors aren’t used for visuals** I have my reasons for saying this that I won’t put in this review.
I really hope that Shvonne didn't do Jaleel the way that he thought. Shvonne, or Pebbles, was so in love with her first and only, Bam. They were barely making ends meet, but it didn't matter, because they had each other's heart, and were madly in love. Everything changed, when Bam was murdered at the club one night, which left Pebbles heartbroken and confused. Pebbles knew that she needed a new beginning, and she moved away, leaving everything, and everyone that she knew behind.
Jaleel, or Spade was the head man in charge. He ran his organization with an iron fist. Jaleel kept his team in check, because he didn't need to be caught off guard like his father, which ultimately led to his demise. The only thing he didn't have, was someone to share it with, until he met Pebbles. Spade knew that Pebbles was a ridah, and she was as fiesty as they came, but at times, she was too much. She definitely wasn't one to be messed with, or to be took for granted.
When Spade's mother first laid eyes on Pebbles, she advised her son to leave, but Spade didn't listen, but now that he looked back on it, Pebbles was Spade's downfall. In Spade's mind, Pebbles needed to be loved, and only time would be able to do that. In Peeble's mind, no one would ever love her the way that Bam did, and she had to keep his memory alive. In the meantime, Tiana, Pebbles best friend, has been diagnosed with a deadly disease, and was slowly trying to put the pieces of her life back together.
Mannnn listen the wicked web of deceit we weave! Pebbles played her part and she played it well! She had me fooled! I loved her and Bam’s relationship and i knew when he met his untimely demise it was gonna take a toll on her. I couldn’t stand Gino. He moved too funny for me and what he did to Lala took the cake. Although, I wish there was a little more development between Spade and Pebbles relationship. I felt like it was just a little rushed. Spade thought he was untouchable and he was for a minute but, just when he thought it was safe. BAM! He’s sitting in jail fighting for his life. Karma is a b*tch and it came to him 10x’s hard. He swore up and down he wasn’t gonna go out like his pops although he wasn’t killed he still got played. This story was a prime example of everything isn’t what it seems. His mama was right on the money tho. Few small errors not many. Good storyline. Had me laughing the whole book. Can’t wait til part 2
Plot twist like a motherfucker (Samuel L. Jackson voice so you know it's real). I have never disliked one of the male leads in a LaToya Nicole book till today! Bam was bae!!! But fuck Spade and his momma and his daddy frfr. Pebbles stayed bossed up the whole book. Happy that there was no cliffhanger 🙌🙌🙌. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book but I'm so happy that I'm not going to be sitting around looking like a crack head till it comes out. Great read
Pebbles is a mess she knew exactly what she was doing when she set spade up... I understand she loved bam and that she lost her baby but that was 3 years ago and if it wasnt for her smart mouth bam wouldn't have been killed because he was taking up for pebbles.. her mouth got her in a lot of trouble and made enemies for no reason that she couldn't even handle I hate that spade loved her but when he found out she set him up he was hit with 300 years hopefully he can find a way around this I'm team spade all the way
Pebbles was a beast. I swear I never saw that ending coming. I kind of feel bad for Spades even though I didn't like him in the beginning. He should have listened to his mother. I don't feel bad about Gino dying. He did La La mad wrong. I don't care what she did, she didn't deserve the mess he put her through. I hope Tiana gets what is coming to her because she was foul for what she did. She chose to live the life she wanted to and look where it got her. Can't wait to read part 2. Hopefully Pebbles and Spades can overcome what transpired between them.
Hunny I’m ready this book, and I’m like dang little momma you stay crying over yo ex let him be at peace. Baby when I got to the end I mean the very last page. Hell I was mad I didn’t catch on she was crying because she was sleeping with The enemy. Poor little rink rink. I don’t feel bad for Spade at all I promise I don’t. Karma is two bitches so baby girl go need to be careful. Part two Leets get ready to rumbbbbbbbbbbbbble
My mouth is still hanging open from that cliffhanger. Latoya Nicole gives nothing but the best and for that and the many books she's written I will continue to be her biggest fan. When I tell you this book took a twist in the end unexpectedly I hollered. I can't wait for book two because the sh@@ just got real.
When I tell you this had my mouth wide open in disbelief honey!!! Pebbles is that birch for real!! She did what she had to do but Spade may come back in the clutch. I loved her and Bam's relationship and the way Spade got her right together with that damn basement. LaToya Nicole never disappoints and I love all her books!!!
She didnt have to do him like that. Man wtf!!! Pebbles played it to the T. I hope it dont end too bad for her. Bam was in the streets he lived by the sword so he should die by the sword. I hooe he get out and murk her ugly ass. Im so pissed right now. Pebbles has got to go ASAP. Hurry up 17th.
Talk about BOMB! Yesss Locked Down By Hood Love was great! I was not expecting that ending tho. Pebbles was everything and a true BOSS and ridah. My nerves are on edge not having a clue what to expect from pt 2, but I can't wait. Another awesome read LaToya Nicole, you never disappoint!!!
I don’t know why I expected anything other than normal from you. If I learned anything it’s to always expect the unexpected. This book was crazy. Especially the ending. I couldn’t believe you would do that to me. I’m not even sure I want to read part 2. Y feelings are so hurt smh. I truly didn’t see any of that coming. Sensational job
I think I was really in denial about Pebbles. I think this read was genius and I am anoit to dine into part 2. I gotta see how this storyline gonna sound because I am left in utter shock behind this ending..... I'm not giving no spoilers, but this read is beyond 5 stars. #PageTurner #LaToyaNicoleFan
this book is crazy and like going through a world wind. lala girl sometimes you have to know when go walk away. Tatiana dang really see what happens when you chase his bag instead of yo own. spade remember the queen leads. pebbles you just took the cake. gino jealousy is an ugly trait
The story definitely held my attention, pebbles and her man had the perfect relationship, they were like Bonnie and clyde, after the incident happened pebbles just wasnt herself anymore, she is one bad bitch, and she just knocked my socks off at the end. I cant wait for part two. Thanks for a gd read.
This book is simply amazing. I just can't get enough of this author's work. Pebbles and Bam Bam was good together but Pebbles and Spade made my day. I don't know what kind of twists and turns it's about to be but I hope. Pebbles stays down for Spade. Great writing and a great story.
I stayed up until 5:35am to finish this book !!!! When i say I NEEEVVVVEEEERRRRRR saw this coming !! I thought Bam was gone be like Blaze !! Never in a million years would i have predicted this ending !!! As always you kilt it hun 😘
Ok I was not expecting that ending. Now I can't wait for part 2 to come out. Just like always LaToya did her thing with this book. You must read this page turner, you will not be disappointed.
Now Latoya you can't leave me hanging like that. Please don't Pebbles be the one who set Spade up. Now Gino needed to be killed because he was a real snake. I know has to be some kind of twist to the story. I can't wait until part 2 comes out a week is to far away.
So Spade was the one who killed BamBam and Pebbles set Spade up and took his whole empire to pay him back. He should have listened to his mother from the beginning. I can't wait to see what happens next in part 2.
Mannnn let me just say this another banger!! I always thought Spade might have been responsible just from his tattoo but damn. One this Latoya Nicole is known for is these plot twists. Now I can’t wait for part 2
That was a banger I'm patiently waiting on part 2 this was a great book he gonna fuck hoer up man I can't wait to find out what happens next my girl always drop some great reads
I felt it in my soul. I knew she was gone do it. When pebbles mentioned that tat ♠️ I knew she realized he was the one who did that to her bam. Can’t wait for part 2 Latoya Nicole you never disappoint babes😘😘😍😍
HO-LY ISH ! Latoya has done it again. another banger added to this list. Pebbles tricked me too bcuz i NEVER would’ve guessed all of that. she was good. she was dang good and i can’t wait to see how part 2 will play out
I just kept thinking it was Spade who killed Bam. He never knew what hit him when he met her, he lost all reasoning. If she would've sat a little longer she really could've gotten everything. I can't wait to see what's next. She was so cold with it.
Man man man Latoya Nicole!! This book right here is 💣💣. I went from lmao 2 being mad as hell 2 sad n by the end I'm just SHOCKED! LIKE OMG WTH. This is my first read by LaToya Nicole baby after this I need to download her whole catalog .
Man please tell me book 2 is ready!! Man Pebbles played Spade to the left so hard!! He was blinded by looks and something else. He should have listened to his mama. Wow!!
Ok so this right has to be the sickest most slickest act of revenge ive ever encountered....i just have a feeling he wont be in there for those years and things will really become interesting
Oh this books good, it's so good you think you have all the answers but you don't. Man I don't like how she played spade. He was a killer and she knew this but he changed everything for her. Ready for book 2.
