Shelves: poetry
These poems braid deep intimacy, historical witness, and identity in the most graceful way. I’ve never read anything like it before. Every poem is a knockout.

Just to be fair up front: the author is a friend and co-worker.

But this collection is powerful, personal, beautiful. Approaches matters of locality, both what it means to be at home, to leave home, to find a home in the wider world. It's a great collection, and I can't recommend it enough.

Mary Kovaleski Byrnes' "So Long the Sky" is a phenomenal book; I was just taken aback by how powerful it was. Many of her poems are so strong and vivid they read like a force of nature. There's also a distinct sense of ethnic/working class/middle-American identity I found really unique and I appreciated. I was further impressed by her ambitious creative choices like using a triptych for example - I've never seen that used in a book before!
