BACKSTABBED! Shocks and surprises await Naoto, Marie and the rest of the gang when they find their way to Shangri La Grid, crime capital of the world. The team’s stuck together through thick and thin, but how will they cope with the discovery of a traitor in their midst? And as if being betrayed by one of their own wasn’t bad enough... is that another Initial-Y automaton in front of them?!
This volume deals with the aftermath of the last volume primarily and changes the venue to South-east Asia, which is a pretty rare setting to see in light novels. Certain liberties were definitely taken in terms of the setting, but overall as someone from the area, it does feel like the author's done the research at the least for name-dropping places and local terms.
That said, this volume puts the spotlight on Marie's bodyguard, Halter, as he navigates the lawless world of Chiang-Mai to safeguard his charge(s) at all cost. He does hide a surprisingly interesting past himself, and would have been easily the protagonist of his own spin-off backstory so this is the best part of the volume.
Unfortunately, the best parts of the series so far for me, namely the crazy powers of the Initial-Y series are definitely the weakest link in this volume as the 3rd in the series, TeMP gets introduced but her powers aren't really explored much.
In fact a bunch of times, it feels like the authors got lazy to write about the battles between TeMP and her fellow sisters, they just skip to somewhere else and then write about the result later, so I am left feeling disappointed overall.
I still like this volume however, mainly because the character development is still pretty well done here. Sadly, this series is on hiatus with no releases in the foreseeable future. I do hope it does not end here, and the authors will continue with it.

I came in on this in the middle, as a result of finding this one sitting on the New Books shelves of our local library. However, it actually stands alone pretty well. You pretty much just have to accept the notion that Earth has been completely remade with magical gears (something along the line of Jay Lake's Mainspring, except in the future instead of an alternate Colonial America), and is full of cyborgs and automatons that operate on similar magical clockwork. The characters have survived some kind of battle, and are now in Shangri-La Grid, a city that was once part of Thailand but is now a no-man's-land between several nations and is run by three competing crime families.
One of their number, the automaton AnchoR, was badly damaged in that previous battle. Now our protagonists are trying to save her, but her mainframe is bent, causing everything else to be out of sync. They're going to have to push their knowledge of clockwork to its limits and then some to put her back together again.
It's a fun fantasy adventure with strong steampunk overtones. However, there were places here and there where I have to question the translators' choices of terminology. There were some places where I really thought the translator didn't realize the English word had a connotation that didn't quite fit the situation the narrative described.
Probably my favorite in the series, with more Halter, stakes a little lower but still pretty intense, the genius teens getting more confident in doing what they do best, and some nice build-up. Too bad it doesn't lead to more as the series is on hiatus, but if it ever does continue, at least there's something solid here.
