Have you ever read a book and disliked it right from the start, but then kept reading anyway? Usually, I'll DNF things if I'm not enjoying them. But I also sort of wanted to see where this one went?

Well I can tell you a few things:

1) Lots of men die.

2) There's a lot of domestic abuse mentioned, so beware.

3) The book could do with another round of proofreading (typos, missing words, etc.).

4) There is no sex. Hell, there's barely any kissing. Some of y'all are looking for romances like this, but I

Another book for my collection (ahem . . . recent obsession) with this genre . . .

Melissa is on the run, and the clock is ticking. Though already married, Melissa is determined to escape her abusive husband and give the baby she realized she is expecting a better life. So she answers the mail-order-bride ad of a wealthy rancher out west. Though hating the need for deceit and bigamy, she hopes to get there in time to marry the rancher so that he thinks her child is his.

But then, Jed Cunningham ha

I enjoyed reading Blythe Carver’s A Highwayman’s Mail Order Bride (Western Hearts, #1) as it
Provided me with a glimpse of life of the early west. I particularly enjoyed the way Ms. Carver blends romance and intrigue into this old west tale. The plot line is well thought out with twists and turns creating tension and suspense. Ms. Carver created multi-dimensional characters. Her female protagonist, Melissa Carter, is a strong character despite being an abused and battered wife. Once Melissa real

Solid, clean American historical romance. Well done

I'm not a fan of the enemy-to-lover subgenre, yet this was excellent. All behavior was organic. Both characters carry guilt and fear when they meet, and over time, that's released. Melissa's lived through things I'll never experience, so her limited background was sufficient, her motivations understandable. Same with Jed. With both characters, I expect what happened to them would still lead to similar decisions today. The setting was adequate, i

I couldn't finish. Ugh, I hate saying that, as it's only my personal opinion. The book is well written, got me right from the start and kept at a good pace.

The romance just happend too fast for me. I know, this is a fictional book, so anything can happen and that's why we buy them! For the fantasy within the fiction. Life experience just made it overwhelming for me.

It was simply too hard to read about an abused woman, going from one abuser to another, and within a week falling for the second gu

As I was reading this, I couldn’t help but wonder how a happily ever after could possibly work out for a highwayman and an already married woman. Both were doing despicable things for good reasons, and I wasn’t sure I would end up liking either one of them. However, I came to really like the characters, and I hoped for them to have a HEA.

This book was intriguing from the get-go, with seamless writing and detailed descriptions that kept me turning page after page. I really enjoyed this! It defini

A great clean western. Love this book.

Melissa was desperate growing up poor and destitute in Boston. A marriage for survival now has her pregnant and married to a very abusive man. Becoming a mail order bride to a rich rancher in Nevada would allow her hope for escape far enough away to that no one would ever know she was already married. But time was critical to hide her new pregnancy from a new husband. Everything was working until her stage coach was held up and she was taken captive by the

Melissa is going west to marry a rancher. She’s in a hurry. She’s running from an marriage to a man who abused her. At first she answered the mail order bride ad just to escape, but when she discovered she was pregnant she decided to marry the man for her child’s sake. Everything was on track when the stage she was riding was robbed and she was abducted. The illegal acts carried out by the characters bothered me but the story was enjoyable.

Desperate Actions

I really liked this book. It’s a wonderful story of redemption and love. Although it’s on the short side, it doesn’t read like it. The plot is a good one and the characters are real and well-developed. Even though the leading man at the end was a bit “too good to be true,” it was a satisfying ending. I’m already looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Melissa is running from her brutal husband, but her solution to her problem is just a load of other problems. When every well laid plan goes wrong, the end result is better than anything she could have dreamed of.

A charming and rather easy to anticipate story, but one that will totally engage you and leave you cheering to the last word.

I disliked the basic values that the heroine showed in the beginning of this book and could not waste my time finishing it. In my long life I have learned to trust my initial judgments. They are not always correct, but it is easy to slide into a relationship if one does not listen to those first impressions.

Melissa is desperate to get away from her mean, abusive husband.

Getting a way from her husband wasn't as easy as Melissa thought it would be. On her journey to flea the stage is held up, Melissa was taken captive so the bandits could hold her for a random. The outcome is cute and expected. Good read.

A wife fleeing as a mail- order bride

He kept beating his wife until she had to flee toward a better future as another man's mail -order bride. Finding out she is pregnant is bad, getting kidnapped is worse.

What will happen along the trip towards her new future? Just wait until the xxxx hits the fan!

I'm glad I went ahead and read this story through to the end. It certainly is an unusual story for me. Also, I was particularly anxious after the 'wet heat' joke that it would turn out to be just a load of smutty trash. Far from it! A clean romance, thankfully. I love how it all fell into place with such generosity of spirit. I'll keep a look out for more by this writer. ...more

Jed and Melissa

This is a very well written story with well thought out characters. The plot of the story never went the way I thought it might and only increased the suspense, excitement and adventure. This is a real page turned and you want to keep reading and reading.

Love is meant to be

You really can't help who you fall in love with. Even if it's the man who kidnapped you when you were already trying to escape a bad man.
This tale sucked me right in following these two fighting a love they had no right to have

I agree with one reviewer who did not like the values displayed by the H at the beginning of the book. For better had he been portray as hard and uncompromising without taking it to the worst of extremes. Otherwise a good plot with a HEA

A sad book in a lot of ways, but ends well

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very relatable which always makes it a better book. It was a great storyline and I can't wait to read Mark's story, because he's the kind of man I could look up to.

Lively love adventure

I enjoyed this romp through the countryside with Jed and Melissa. Characters were pretty well rounded and situations interesting. The action was well thought out and a very satisfying conclusion. Nice flow. Definitely will be reading the next installment.
