As the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) slowly migrated into the Lake Superior region centuries ago, they were met by a potent adversary—the Dakota (Sioux) who fiercely resisted their spread into its territory. Gradually the Anishinaabe pushed them out of the northern woodlands and into the plains to the south.
This long-running and bloody conflict lies at the heart of the story of The

Lorin Robinson turned back the hands of time to 1000 years. Rather than finding myself stranded somewhere in Europe, here I was in the early days of America. That was a welcome change. The plight of our nation's first settlers - the American Indian took center stage.

Inscribed on the pages of this well-written narrative, I came to understand their unencumbered way of life that endured for countless generations. I was mesmerized by the engaging storyline. With little time to prepare, the ending ca

Before I get into my review, I want to acknowledge that I received this book through the Early Reviewers program on LibraryThing, and I'm grateful to the publishers for the opportunity to read this book.

I'll say right now that I had extremely low expectations for this book, and it in some ways exceeded those expectations by not being as explicitly racist as it perhaps could have been. That being said, it was uh... still fairly gross. Though Robinson cites a number of Ojibwe sources as having hel

A quick read but one which was incredibly well researched with a compelling story about honour and survival

Plot in a Nutshell
After an unexpected and devastating raid on their village 13 of the young men and boys of an Anishinaabe tribe set off in secret to pursue the attackers in an attempt to regain their lost honour

Thoughts
This is a short novel but it packs a punch. There is a great deal of action, much of it violent and bloody and as such it will not be for every reader.
It is however at

“A gripping adventure in which 13 young Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) seek to regain the honor of their band. A delightful work of historical fiction.”—Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Excellent Book about Great Lakes Native American life as it examines the theme of what is honorable as 13 young Anishinaabe youths set out to revenge a Dakota raid on their band. Told through the eyes of one of the 13, it narrates his experience and thoughts. The writing flows so it is a quick read and very focused so it does not go off on tangents. Liked this very much.

This was a pretty interesting yet sad story to get in to. While the author did best getting some research about Ojibwe culture, I think they could've benefitted from getting more to the story from Indigenous peoples of today versus word of mouth from a Historian they met decades ago.
