This middle-grade debut novel really caught my attention from the very beginning. I tend to really enjoy books set in boarding schools and this one was no exception. I haven't read such a thrilling and exciting mystery novel in a while and because it's middle-grade, there weren't many distractions (e.g. love interests) from the main plot like it is often the case wit

Look at this cover. Now back at me. Now BACK to this cover.

The cover is amazing! It gets better every time you look at it, with tiny clues and symbols around the edges of the spooky-mysterious central picture. But, you ask, is the book inside as good as the cover?

Yes. Yes it is.

It's a boarding school story that reminded me quite a lot of Harry Potter (though there is no magic here, but that's okay!), and a twisty mystery that made me think of National Treasure, only British. There's a lot going

I read this manuscript during Pitch Wars last year and it was FABULOUS. It blew me away and I knew right away it was The One. I can't wait to see it in its final form! It is spooky, mysterious, and absorbing, and I fell in love with the characters from page one. There are many boarding school mysteries out there, but there's something so unique and gorgeous about this one with its spunky cast, vein of family loss and longing, and eerie Gothic setting where no one can be trusted. The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane is the kind of book I would have LOVED reading as a nine or ten-year-old. It has strong, independent kids with their own unique voices, an intriguing mystery (that the adults are dead-bent on NOT being helpful with), and juuuuust enough creep factor to make a warm blanket desirable.

Emmy's father disappeared when she was a toddler, and her mother is a "parenting expert" that is rarely around and e

Ignore my usual stingy rating of three stars - I actually did really enjoy this middle grade debut. It’s a tale of mystery and intrigue, but also of friendship. 3 1/2 stars

The story follows young Emmy after her mother sends her to a boarding school in England. While there, Emmy begins to realize there may be more mysterious events happening behind the scenes, events that may even have to do with her missing father.

It’s a nice balance of slightly darker elements and a humorous dynamic among Emmy

A great story and fun to read. Very Harry Potter-esq minus the magic. A mystery to solve, daring midnight escapades and likeable characters. Although the story wraps up in this book, I want more!

Emmeline (Emmy) has bounced around from private school to private school since her mother, a child psychology guru, has accepted different jobs. Now that her mother has a television show in development, her mother decides to ship her off to a boarding school in England! Emmy isn't given any choice, so she soon finds herself arriving mid term at Wellsworth, angering her new roommate and being forbidden from playing her beloved soccer. This book is a Harry Potter wanna-be. Literally. I could easily do a "These Books are the Same" video on this.

I understand that this book is a middle grade. But middle grade is not an excuse for lazy writing, weak plot lines and stereotypical characters. We have a trio of meddling kids, a mysterious British boarding school, a couple of teachers--some good, some bad--and a mysterious organization that have it after the main character. And the main character is surprisingly good at a sport. And th

The Mystery Of Black Hollow Lane is so good, I didn’t want it to end! Emmy is shipped to a boarding school in England while her mother is busy with her career. She doesn’t know much about her father, but keeps discovering mysterious pieces from his past.
This book does have a Harry Potter feel to it, but it didn’t take away from the story at all. Emmy was determined to find out more about her father and with each secret she uncovers things get more intense at school, I loved the characters, the

I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series. This story had every element I love... boarding school, friendships, mean girls and a spooky mystery to solve. The book follows Emmy, a daughter of "parenting expert mom" on TV who is very busy and decides to send her to a boarding school in England. Wellsworth School is a mystery on it's own and Emmy soon finds out her absent father used to attend the school. Emmy and her friends soon stumble on a secret society within the school ...more

This book was seriously so good, guys! By the time I started reading this, I had honestly forgotten what it was about so I went in not knowing what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised! It does take a few chapters to get into the main plot line involving the secret society, but the beginning chapters work very well for setting up the world in which this is going on, and once I started getting hints about the society, it just made me even more motivated

3.5 STARS - This book piqued my interest with its beautiful cover and its setting - a British boarding school. Gotta love it! The mystery has an adventurous feel with its ancient relics, secret societies and hidden passageways but at the heart of the story is Emmy, a tween girl who has been dumped at the school by her overly busy mom but finds solace in two friends who don't mind digging into the mystery of Emmy's missing father.

While Nobel brings her own unique story and characters, fans of Ha

Boarding school! Secret societies! This was totally a catnip novel for me, though it did occasionally feel like the children were way older than the eleven years old they were supposed to be. It also sometimes felt like the author was possibly overly influenced by Harry Potter, only without the magic. It was a fun, quick read, though and I raced right through it.

I loved this book. Full Stop. Julia Nobel has done a great job of bringing this mystery to life, of creating fun characters who work as a team, and of creating a vibrant main character in Emmy. It's a story that keeps you guessing and, when you think you have it worked out, there is a new twist. I'm looking forward to reading the next book from this author.

I found this to be a highly engaging book! I was pulled into Emmy's mystery almost right away. A young girl with a somewhat absent mother and a dad who disappeared on her third birthday...Emmy has a lot of questions and time to think about them. The plot unfolded in a timely manner, but the end left me with questions. Exactly, what a good series will do--leave you wanting more/another book! Wellsworth obviously holds many secret

I received this book as an advanced reader's copy due to the curiosity of our young patrons. I loved the whole concept of the mysterious secret society and uncovering some unusual discoveries that lead to burning questions such as what happened to Emmy's dad. Our patrons as well as myself LOVE books that have some mystery to them causing the reader to think and imagine what really happened with Emmy's father and will she ever find him? Overall, we really enjoyed this book and looking forward to ...more

This was loads of fun.

The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane felt a little like a nonmagical Harry Potter, though it's a unique story in its own right. After one book the series definitely exhibits a lighter plot than Rowling's series, though I hope it will evolve as it progresses. The book feels age appropriate for the middle reader target audience, but there's definitely plenty here for adult readers as well.

The confrontation at the end felt a bit cartoonish, and there are some elements of the boo

A fun middle grade book that hits all the sweet spots, and packs in an impressive amount of character and plot complexity for its length and target readership. And who doesn’t love a good English boarding school story?
As an adult I would give this 4 stars, mainly due to the denouement being a bit cartoonish compared with the rest and a handful of loose moments, but it’s still a 5 star MG read. If it’s the start of a series — as the end would have one suspect — I look forward to the next installm

When I requested this title for review, I told the publisher that I was getting strong John Bellairs vibes from the book, with its middle grade mystery, Gorey-esque cover, and promises of secret passageways and clues hidden in medieval relics. There’s no supernatural element to the story, as in Bellairs’s work, but it still gave me the chills and intrigue I was hoping for — the mystery is fascinating, and author Julia Nobel has me eager for the next book in the series. This was a page turner! It has a definite Harry Potter feel to it, without the magic. Emmy is sent to a boarding school in England as her mother commits to a grueling work schedule. School is hard enough without a secret society spying on you. But it makes for a great middle grade novel in Julia Nobel's The Mystery of Black Hollow Lane.

For most boarding school students in England, the worst villain they can expect to face is Latin and loneliness. Emmy Willick has to cope with those and unraveling the mystery left by her missing father. Every clue she deciphers brings her closer to the truth but drags her deeper into a conspiracy stretching back centuries.

It was the cover that drove me to request this one from Netgalley. Look at it, kinda creepy, mysterious and yet inviting at the same time.

It wasn’t until I was almost finished that I realized this is the first book in series and any misgivings I had about unresolved issues made sense. The author laid the foundation for further book(s) with this layered story revolving around Emmy and the mysterious disappearance of her father. The story was interesting enough with a unique cast of characters, at

This is a fun middle grade mystery about Emmy, who is being sent to a boarding school in England. Her mom, a parenting expert, is going to do a TV show and Emmy would not get the attention she needs. Since Emmy's dad is out of the picture, she goes reluctantly, but just before she leaves, she gets a package that appears to be from her dad, or at least about her dad. Once she gets to England, she starts making some friends (and enemies) and tries to figure out what REALLY happened to her dad. It' ...more

This debut work is fun boarding school mystery for advanced lower grade readers and up. It is thrilling without too much danger, language, or other questionable material for young readers. Kids who are cutting their teeth on the mystery genre will enjoy following the clues and trying to predict what will happen (and likely be caught off guard by a large plot twist near the end).
