Book Review 6:
The Robot. By Paul Shipton.
A guided reading Pink Level B book. Band 1B.
Paul Shipton’s book “The Robot” is an excellent resource to consult when teaching pupils the use of speech bubbles within a text. The simplistic yet intriguing book follows the sequence of creating a robot. Gary Dunn’s alluring illustrations capture the attention of children and adults alike. The simple language and sentence structure make the story attractive for pupils of all reading abilities.
Not only does this wonderful book give fantastic opportunities for prediction and assessment of correct sequencing of stories for children; it also highlights the importance of conventions in Standard English such as “thank you”.
Shipton’s wonderful guided reading book can be used for cross curricular purposes such as art: pupils could draw their own robot and label body parts. Moreover, this activity could have a direct correlation to maths and ICT/Computing lessons consolidating children’s’ learning of 2D shapes to create the robot and ICT/computing skills by drawing the robot on a computer/laptop/net book/Ipad etc.
Notwithstanding, this text could additionally be used for KS1 lessons based on the use of labeling within a text, the use of different voices for different characters within a text, role play opportunities for pupils to create their own versions of the robot story.
I planned a guided reading and guided writing session based on this marvelous book. By the end of the of the two part lesson, pupils were able to create their own speech bubble for a robot independently using adjective words in their sentences. I would highly recommend this book for a Year 1 class. My pupils excelled at the writing task and have asked can we do a similar lesson soon.
