Queen is a surprisingly strong, packed novella with an interesting take on the classic femme fatale stereotype.

It might have benefited from being a smidge longer, but in the pages that it took, this story managed to build a pretty decent world, a complex main character, and a strangely hot romance? I love me some bodyguard romances.

Amarea is a very interesting study of the manifestation and perceptions of female power, and I'd like her to be the heroine in every book I ever read. In fact, it almost ...more

Short but good! I give this 3.5 and thats mostly only cause it was a bit confusing keeping up with everything, I wanted a tiny bit more to explain things. Im definitely glad were getting a whole novel in this world, I think it will be quite interesting. ...more

The moment I was told that the main character was an antihero, I was sold, and the Dark Queen's story was one I didn't want to end, and there is so much I adore about this book.

Let's list a few:
- Amarea, the main character. She is flawed, conflicted, bloodthirsty and frustrated with the state of the world. She reminds me of Mary Queen of Scots in the TV show Reign: she needs to keep her head high, lead and reign while struggling with her emotions and humanity.
- The universe Boyce has built: the ...more

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

Queen has an impressive concept and interesting storyline, but the main problem with it is the length (as previously mentioned by just about everyone who has read it). I find that one of the main problems, which would also make it longer, is the speed with which the narrative flows due to occasional lack of description. However, that does not mean by any stretch that this short snippet into this world is not worth ...more

Oh my lordddddddd. I'd read a whole, full-length novel about Amarea, holy crap, she's such an amazingly complex MC. And Ithrael. I NEED A FULL LENGTH NOVEL.

Releasing 4th September 2018.

For those of you who may be confused The Dark Queen was originally a novella called Queen. Queen was expanded into a full-length standalone novel The Dark Queen. If you've read Queen you'll recognise Part One...

Disclaimer: Amarea's views are not my own and no, I don't approve of a lot of the things she does. Because: yikes!
Kathryn Fletcher
There are always two sides to a story and in this short story we see the how the evil queen is perhaps not all bad. Boyce tells a story where the dark isn't bad, and it's actually the light that we should be wary of (and anyone who knows me knows my obsession with darkness).

With beautiful, full descriptions this story sucks you in to a vibrant fantasy world with a queen unable to rule her own way. It's sensuous and dark and filled with smart politics. Also a bisexual main character is always a super ...more

I loved this book, I was hooked on the characters from the beginning. Queen Amarea is strong, powerful and supposedly the villain of the piece...or is she?
From her growing relationship with her Captain to her slightly round-about way of getting what she wants (wasn't sure how I felt about this, it was a fine line between selling her body commonly and wielding her femininity as a weapon), either way, the guys for sure had no idea what hit them!
My biggest problem with this book? ITS TOO SHORT!!! ...more

What a good read!

Wasn't sure what to expect - so glad I read! Hope there is a follow-up. Very visual novel - too short.

I really enjoyed the sexy, dark romp of a novel. The characters are well drawn and the story is great. The only downside is: I want more!! It feels like the first episode, or a pilot episode for a huge long running series. Hooked.
The Dark Queen is a fantastic fantasy novel with a very interesting and unorthodox female lead character. I love the world Josephine has created in this book which she brings to life with skill and imagination. I was lucky enough to read a pre-release copy of the book and I loved it from start to finish. Now, I'm quite a slow reader but I managed to finish this book very quickly (for me anyway). It has all the elements of a great fantasy, a hero's journey, a daring mission, magic, battles and of ...more

Her fave is beautiful but deadly. Her magic is powerful yet untapped. Her vengeance is true yet all-consuming. They call her the Dark Queen.

Tantalising, Vengeful and Emotional.

I picked up The Dark Queen at YALC this year and after talking to the author about her book, I couldnt leave the stand without picking up a copy.

Originally a Novella, Josephine Boyce has created a strong and action packed novel. I was not certain what to expect when diving into the world of The Dark Queen but I was completely ...more

I managed to get this beautiful book while at YALC this year.
I wish it was longer or had more books to follow, but then again I think what makes this book so good is that it's novella and there's no need to wait for more books to come out.
At the start I wasn't sure how I will feel about the book, but omg how awesome it was, the main MC is strong and powerful woman. It felt empowering to read about such amazing character who fought for her people. She represents what women struggle with everyday, ...more
