Chapter 54: The Moon
The Hour approaches and the Moon is splitting apart. Yet if they see any sign, they avoid it and say: “It’s constant magic!” They deny it all and follow their own whims, even though every matter has been settled.

News has come to them containing a rebuke, as eloquent wisdom, even though Warners can get nowhere. So turn away from them on the day when the Crier will call out about a horrible event. Their eyes cast down; they will issue forth from their tombs as if they were scattered grasshoppers dashing along towards the Crier. Disbelievers will say: “This is such a hard day!”

Noah’s folk denied it long before them; they rejected Our servant and said: “He’s crazy!” and he was rebuffed. He appealed to his Lord: “I have been overpowered, so support me!”
So We opened Heaven’s gates for water to pour down. We drilled the earth full of springs and the waters met a command which has been decreed. We transported him on something built with planks and caulking which sailed on before Our eyes as a reward for someone who had been rejected. We left it as a sign; yet will anyone bear it in mind?
How were My torment, and My warnings! We have made the Quran easy to remember; yet will anyone memorize it?

Ad rejected it. How were My torment, and My warnings? We sent a howling gale against them on a day full of continuous misfortune, which snatched men up as if they were hollow palm trunks.
How were My torment, and My warnings! We have made the Quran easy to remember; yet will anyone memorize it?

Thamud rejected My warnings too, and they said: “Are we to follow a single human being from among ourselves? We would then be in error and frenzy. Has the Reminder been delivered merely to him among us? Instead he is a brash liar.” Tomorrow they will know who the brash liar is! We are sending them a she-camel as a test, so watch them and act patient. Announce to them how water must be shared among them; each will have his own special time to drink. They called out to their companion, and he assumed the task and hamstrung her.
How were My torment, and My warnings? We sent a single Blast against them so they lay like dry stalks caught in a fence corner. We have made the Quran easy to memorize, yet will anyone bother to memorize it?

Lot’s people rejected the warnings. We sent a sandstorm against them, except for Lot’s own household whom We saved at daybreak as a favor from Ourself, thus We reward anyone who acts grateful. He had warned them of Our onslaught, yet they discredited the warnings. They tried to coax his guests away from him, so We dazzled their eyes: “Taste My torment and My warnings!” Early one morning, unavoidable torment dawned upon them.
“Taste My torment, and My warnings!” We have made the Quran easy to remember; yet will anyone memorize it?

Warning s came to Pharaoh’s court. Yet they rejected Our signs completely. So We seized them the way a Powerful, Competent person would seize them. Are you disbelievers any better than those men were, or have you some dispensation to be found in the Psalms? Or do they say: “We all support one another?”
They will all be defeated together and will turn their backs to run away. Indeed the Hour has been promised them; the Hour will be quite disastrous and most bitter. Criminals will be lost in error and frenzy. Some day they will be dragged face down through the Fire: “Experience the sense of scorching!”
We have created everything in due proportion. Our command comes only once, in the twinkling of an eye! We wiped out your adherents; does no one recall it? Everything they did is to be found in the Psalms. Everything small or great has been recorded.

The heedful will be by gardens and a river in a sure position under a Competent Sovereign.

I asked God whether He approves of it, and these four pages came along with the Chapter: Consultation within the span of half an hour write before I formulated my terms—
The Bargain, The Oath, and The Agreement:
Qur’an: Chapter 61, Verse 10—
You who believe, shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from painful torment? You should believe in God and His messenger, and strive in God’s way with your property and persons.

Qur’an: Chapter 89, Verse 1-6—
By the Daybreak
And ten nights
And the even and the odd,
And night as it journeys on,
Does that not contain an oath for someone who is mindful?

Qur’an: Chapter 33 – The Coalition, Verse 7, 8—
When We made an agreement with the prophets, with you and with Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus the son of Mary, We pledged a solemn agreement with them; so He might question sincere persons concerning their sincerity.

“God suffices as the Witness for you.”

This is the verse that kept me away.
Qur’an: Chapter 43 - Luxury, Verse 39, 40—
It will never benefit you today to have any partners in torment since you have already gone wrong. Will you make the deaf hear or guide the blind, as well as anyone else who is in obvious error?

And this one—
Qur’an: Chapter 30 - Luxury, Verse 28—
He offers you an example from among yourselves. Do you have any partners for what We have provided you with among those whom your right hands control? Do you feel the same in such a case so that you fear [these servants] just as you fear one another? Thus We spell put signs for folk who use their reason.

It means a partner can be someone whom you trust just as you trust your nearest kinfolk—the ones whom your right hands control. And it’s measured through how less you fear them. To speak straight: if you still fear someone, time is not fit still to have that person as your partner.

This is the verse through which God saved you from my tongue.
Qur’an: Chapter 33 – The Coalition, Verse 69, 70—
You who believe, do not be like those who abused Moses. God cleared him of what they said. He became outstanding with God. You who believe, heed God and speak straight to the point.

Since I promised I’ll tell you someday about which verses made me act. Here are some of them. These all came within the same hour. Or two, perhaps—
Qur’an: Chapter 9, Verse 40—
If you do not support him, well, God did support him when those who disbelieved expelled him as the second of the two, when they were both in the Cave, as he told his companion: “Do not worry; for God is with us.” So God sent his serenity down on him and aided him with troops you did not see, and placed the word of those who disbelieved lowest, while God’s word remained supreme. God is Powerful, Wise.

Qur’an: Chapter 33 – The Coalition, Verse 4, 5—
God has not placed two hearts in one man’s body. Nor has He granted you wives whom you may back away from to act as your mothers, nor has He granted you adopted sons to be your own sons. That is your own statement made by your own mouths. God states the truth and He guides along the Way. Call them by their own fathers; it is fairer so far as God is concerned. If you do not know who their fathers were, then [call them] your brothers in religion and your wards.

Qur’an: Chapter 30, Verse 21—
Among His signs is the fact that He has created you spouses for you from among yourselves so that you may console yourselves with them. He has planted affection and mercy between you; in that are signs for people who think things over.

Every day I faced doubt, the Book brought me back and made sure I ‘never back away from’ it—that is for everyone. But the Book kept convincing me the most about Moses. If anyone ever feels any need to thank, it’s to this Book.

I stopped at 'Chapter 28: Stories'--

"T.S.M.
These are verses from the clear Book!
We shall recite in all truth to you some information about Moses and Pharaoh for folk who believe.
Pharaoh had acted haughtily on earth and split his people into factions, seeking to weaken a group of them. He slaughtered their sons and let their women live; he was so depraved! Yet We wanted to endow those who were considered inferior on earth, and make them into leaders and make them [Our] heirs. We established them on earth and showed Pharaoh and Haman as well as their troops how they should beware of them.

We inspired Moses' mother [as follows]: "Nurse him. If you should fear for him, then cast him into the river. Do not fear nor feel sad; We will return him to you, and appoint him as a missionary."

Pharaoh's household took him in, so that he became an enemy and [a source of] sadness for them. Pharaoh and Haman as well as their troops were so mistaken! Pharaoh's wife said: "[He'll be] a comfort for me and for you. Do not kill him! Perhaps he'll benefit us, or we'll adopt him as a son." They did not suspect [a thing].

Next morning the vitals of Moses' mother felt empty; she almost revealed who he was, if We had not bound up her heart so she would be a believer. She told his sister: "Keep track of him."

So she watched out for him from a distance while they did not notice it. We kept him from nursing at first, and so she said: "Shall I lead you to a family who will look after him for you? They will take good care of him." Thus we restored him to his mother so he might comfort her and she would not feel so sad, and so she would know that God's promise is true, even though most of them do not realize it.

When he reached maturity and came of age, We gave him discretion and knowledge. Thus We reward those who act kindly.
He entered the city at a time when its people were lax, and found two men fighting there, one from his own sect and the other from his enemy's. The one who was from him own faction appealed for his assistance against the one who was from his enemy's. Moses punched him and he finished him off!

He said: "This is some of Satan's work; he is such an enemy, a plain misleader." He said: "My Lird, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me!" So He forgave him; He is Forgiving, the Merciful. He said: My Lord, since You have shown me such favor, I shall never back up any criminals [again]."

Yet he felt fearful next morning in the city; he was on the alert when the man he had tried to support the day before called out to him for help [again]. Moses told him: "You are clearly a trouble-maker." When he wanted to catch the one who was an enemy to them both, he said: "Moses, do you want to kill me just as you killed another person yesterday? You only want to become a bully on earth; you do not want to be a reformer."

A man came hurrying up from the farther end of the city; he said: "Moses, the councilmen are deliberating about you, whether they should execute you. Clear out! I'm giving you sincere advice." He left it fearfully, on the alert. He said: "My Lord, save me from such wrongdoing folk."

As he made his way towards Midian, he said: "Perhaps my Lord will guide me along some level path." When he approached the water of Midian, he found a company of people watering [their flocks] there, and found two women beside them, holding theirs off at a distance. He said: "What's the matter with you?" The both said: "We may not draw any water until the herdsmen move on. Our father is an elderly gentleman."

So he did the watering for them. Then he went off to [rest in] the shade, and said: "My Lord, I am poor enough to accept anything You may grant me." One of the girls came up to him, walking bashfully. She said: "My father invites you, in order to reward you with some [sort of] payment since you have done the watering for us."

When he came up to him, he told him the stories. He said: "Do not fear; you have escaped from wrongdoing folk."

One of the two (girls) said: "My father, hire him! The best man you can hire is someone who is strong, trustworthy." He said: "I want to marry you to one of these daughters of mine, provided you hire yourself out to me for eight seasons. If you should complete ten, then that will be your own affair. I do not want to be hard on you; you will find me an honorable man, if God so wishes." He said: "That is up to you and me; whichever term I may serve out, there will be no injustice done to me. God is a Trustee for anything we say."

When Moses had completed the term [that he had promised to work] and he was traveling away with his family, he glimpsed a fire on a slope of Mount [Sinai]. He told his family: "Stay here! I have glimpsed a fire. Perhaps I may bring you some news from it, or an amber from the fire so you may warm yourselves."

So when he came up to it, someone called out to him from the tree in the blessed hollow on the right bank of the valley: "Moses, I am God, Lord of the Universe!" And then: "Throw down your staff."

When he saw it twitching as if it were possessed, he turned around and tried to escape. "Moses, come closer and do not act afraid. You will be safe! Slip your hand into your shirtfront; it will come out white without being harmed. And gather up your courage against any apprehension. These will be two proofs from your Lord for Pharaoh and his councillors; they have been such immoral folk.

He said: "My Lord, I killed a person among them and fear they may execute me. My brother Aaron is more convincing with his tongue; send him along with me to back me up and vouch for me. I fear they will talk me out of it." He said: "We shall strengthen your arm by means of your brother and grant both of you authority so they will not overtake either of you. Because of our signs, you both will win out, as well as anyone who follows you."

When Moses brought them Our clear signs, they said: "This is only some contrived magic. We have not heard of this through our early forefathers." Moses said: "My Lord is quite aware as to who brings guidance from His presence and who will attain the Home in the end. Wrongdoers do not succeed."

Pharaoh said: "Councilmen, I have not known any god for you except myself. Light a klin for me, Haman, for some clay, and build me a tower so I may climb upto Moses' god. Still I think he is a liar!"

Both he and his troops acted overproud on earth without any right [to be so]. They thought they would never return to Us. We seized him and his troops and hurled him into the deep. See how the outcome was for worngdoers. We turned them into leaders who invite [men] to the Fire. On Resurrection Day, they will not be supported. We shall let a curse follow them in this world, while on the Resurrection Day, they will look hideous.

We gave Moses the Book after we had wiped out the earliest generations [to serve] as insight for mankind, and for guidance and mercy so they may bear it in mind. You [Muhammad], were not present on the western slope when we settled the matter for Moses, nor were you a witness. But we raised up some generations, and [their] lifetime was prolonged for them. Nor were you a resident among the people of Midian, reciting our signs to them, but We were [to send] emissaries.

You were not on the slope of Mount [Sinai] when We called out, but [have been sent] as a mercy from your Lord so you might warn a folk whom no warner had come to before you, so that they might bear it in mind. If only some calamity would strike them because of what [evil] their hands have sent on ahead, and so they would say: "Our Lord, if only you had sent us some messenger, we should have followed Your signs and been believers!"
