In this kids' biography, discover the incredible story of Anne Frank, the courageous young writer who hid from the Nazis during World War II.
Anne Frank's diary is read by children and adults worldwide. It tells two stories: one of an extraordinary young girl living in hiding during one of the most fearsome times in history, and one of a relatable young girl facing the same questions and troubles that kids come up against today. Learn how both sides of this puzzle made up the person who is Anne Frank. In this biography for kids ages 8-12, meet Anne's family and friends, explore "The Annex" where they hid, and see her story put in historical context alongside information about World War II and the Holocaust, and Hitler and Nazi Germany.

Everything was great about this book except for the illustrations. It was really interesting to read this book. I am not old enough to read the actual diary yet but I wanted to learn more about her life. I thought the words describing the fear and trauma that they faced were really interesting. I would read more books like this. I just really wished it didn't have the weird illustrations because they don't add anything to the story.
Anne Frank Stephen Krensky Biography Book Level: 4.2
Many young students are asked to read the "Diary of Anne Frank" in school. While this is a great insight into what it was like for a young girl and her family in Nazi Germany, it does not really tell the reader who Anne Frank was other than a girl who hid from the Nazis and then was eventually captured. In a biography written about her for young readers, we are able to learn who the girl was and where she came from before the Nazis invaded her homeland. We get an insight into her life and learn that her was a fairly normal young girl, living a normal life. This allows the readers to connect with her story and understand why her documenting her life was such a significant event.
The presentation of this biography is absolutely wonderful. There are pictures and illustrations to accompany the writing that allow readers to see and immerse themselves into the story and the life of Anne Frank. The are able to see that she is a very typical young girl from a very typical family in Holland during the time period. The story and images flow very well together and enhance the biography that can be very difficult to write in a way that young readers will enjoy and continue to want to read.
This book “DK Life Stories Anne Frank (Stephen Krensky)” is a biography of Anne Frank. It's written in very concise sentences, so it would be good as a teaching material for children and ESL.
It contains a photo of Jews living in Germany who became refugees and left for other countries in boats in search of safety. (P39) In that photo, everyone was smiling broadly, and their expressions were full of hope.
This is my preliminary review, will be back here soon (I hope).
At first I thought this book was the diary itself, well I was totally wrong. It’s mere a narration about the diary. Never mind anyway. I could get a glimpse of Anne’s diary itself in the book.
The book is great for young people, maybe 8-10 yr olds.Has very good English that is easy to read and understand.Read it in an hour and enjoyed it at 15.
This is a good middle grade biography of Anne and a nice refresher of the basic facts of her life. I think it is very age appropriate for 8-12 year olds.
I enjoyed the format, including the many photographs, the Family Tree, and Life Timeline also included in the book.
However, I did not enjoy most of the illustrations by Charlotte Ager, finding them distracting.
The book Anne Frank by Stephen Krensy is a historical fiction novel. It follows a girl named Anne Frank that grew up in the Holocaust. Anne Frank only lived up to 15 during the Holocaust but in her lifetime she liked to write so she wrote down what was happening in her life. She had a lot of things to deal with in her life so writing was how she calmed and expressed herself. It helped her when she heard the Germans outside trying to find the jews hoping she wasn’t gonna get found. While she was hiding she had to be very quiet or else Anne Frank and her family would be taken away.
This book takes place in Germany. The reason I say Germany is because that is where the Holocaust took place and when Hitler was trying to kill all the jews. Anne Frank was in hiding in Germany so Hitler or any of his helpers wouldn’t find them. Anne Frank and her family constantly heard German fighter planes while they were searching for other jews. Once Hitler or his helpers found the jews the “older people and very young children, was immediately condemned to death.” Anne and her sister Margot were put in a concentration camp, their mom Edith Frank was murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau, and their Dad Otto Frank was arrested and sent to the Westerbork transit concentration camp, then to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Sadly they all passed except the Dad Otto Frank.
My favorite part of this book is when they told me where they had to hide during the Holocaust. Anne and her family have to hide in a secret annex. The secret annex was a small entryway that was covered by a bookcase. In the novel, it states, “The bookcase swings open to reveal the entryway to the secret annex.” I think where they hid was a very clever idea. The reason I say clever is because I would never think of someone hiding behind a bookcase. The only time I have ever see that was in a movie. Even though they still got found by the Germans they still hid for 2 years in the secret annex. In the text, it states, “But for all their preparations, their long hours of planning and strategies, they could only wait and see what the future held for them all.” This means that they put a lot of thought into this before they were sure their plan would work.
I would recommend this book to people who like to learn about the troubles in the past or like to learn about history. The reason I say this is because this event happened in 1941-1945. Although this wasn’t that long ago it still made history and we still learn about her to this day. We learn what she went through and all the other jews went through trying not to get caught. The main reason I say troubles is because in the end all the jews want was to live and instead they were running away from people that are trying to kill them. Some jews lived and others sadly didn’t but in the end, it was a tragic event that happened in the past.
You'd be hard pressed to find anyone over the age of thirteen who has not at least heard of Anne Frank. Her diary is on most school's required reading lists. Her popularity is due, in large part, to her ordinariness. In so many ways, Anne was an average schoolgirl; she fought with her sister, she felt annoyed at her parents, she enjoyed spending time with her friends, she hungered to become someone of importance. Her feelings, so familiar to most of us, make her story hit close to home. It is no wonder her diary has gained such popularity. We see ourselves in her words. The always fabulous DK company has produced an examination of some of the facts about Anne's life that one cannot glean from her diary. Accompanied by photographs, charts, maps, a timeline, a family tree, and a quiz, this fact-filled book provides an excellent introduction or companion to Anne Frank, the holocaust, and World War II. Recommended for children ages 8 - 12 the book is, thankfully, age appropriate as it does not veer from the truth and, at the same time, refrains from becoming too graphic.
I have been reading a lot of books about Anne Frank recently. This one comes from DK and it would be a great book for young readers, perhaps those just reading about the Holocaust. There was different information in this book - not that it was different from other information I have read, but different in that I hadn't read it before. There are also more pictures, both of Anne and other photos from the time including a pretty powerful picture of Germany children in the 1930s playing with stacks of money: inflation was so high, money was nearly worthless.
Again I LOVE DK books. On a topic such as Anne Frank, that has so many books out there already, this one is well worth the money! I very much like Stephen Krensky's writing, the illustrations by Charlotte Ager, the photos, the map, the timeline, the Who's Who, the glossary, the quiz, the family tree and the layout of it all!!! I have many books on her, but this one includes so much extra detail that I really appreciate. (And no goofy cartoon face on the cover I am happy to say).
I read this book outloud to my 9 year old and 12 year old kids. I really liked how the author added definitions for more difficult words and how he was able to tell her life story in a way that kids were able to understand the horror of it without giving the nightmares.
It was an amazing book. At first I didn’t really think I would like it but I was wrong. I think everyone should know what Anne Frank had to go through.
Este livro conta a história de vida de Anne Frank, e de uma forma muito realista. É um livro muito bom para quem quiser saber mais sobre a segunda guerra mundial ou sobre Hittler.
