As Harun lay dying here on Kentauron Mikron, all untimely still in his golden youth, he whispered a word to me that he would use if he were born again. It is the meaningless but numerologically magic word "Bangdad." It has since become the name of one of those mirage cities, one of those cloud cities, that travelers sometimes report seeing. I have learned today that its meaning in Old Kentauron is "The Last City Built by Magic."

Raphael Aloysius Lafferty, published under the name R.A. Lafferty, was an American science fiction and fantasy writer known for his original use of language, metaphor, and narrative structure, as well as for his etymological wit. He also wrote a set of four autobiographical novels, a history book, and a number of novels that could be loosely called historical fiction.

La premessa era più che intrigante, una spedizione di spie umane provenienti da "colonie" extraterrestri inviate sulla terra per scoprire informazioni su un misterioso "bambino immortale" si ritrovano nel bel mezzo dell'ambientazione delle Mille e una notte... poi però, man mano che il racconto si sviluppa la trama risulta essere una serie di aggiunte estemporanee di fatti, descrizioni e personaggi; gli espedienti e le risoluzioni vengono presentati senza un minimo di tensione narrativa.

Sembra quasi che, avuta l'idea affascinante per la premessa, l'autore abbia aggiunto fatti più o meno casualmente per allungare il brodo e raggiungere quel centinaio di pagine necessario per farlo pubblicare. Passate oltre.
