Liv Haden is a compelling new novelist with a refreshingly modern writing style who we should all keep our eye on. I was lucky to be an early reader for In The Mind of Revenge last November and thoroughly enjoyed it then. After rereading it for this review, I can confidently say it holds up very well. I actually thought it was better the second time around!

The narrative follows gender-nonconforming Shame, a person who was teased, bullie

I just want to start by saying that this book is only 237 pages and I found myself struggling to finish it.
When I first read the blurb I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Luckily for me, my future sister in law rocks and got it for me as a Christmas gift score! The beginning of the book had me hooked, we met the main character Shame, who is the victim of a brutal attack by classmates solely because they are different from their peers. And when I say brutal, I mean evil, nasty, hateful (y

How much can one person take before they break? In Liv Hadden's new novel, a young person is bullied and eventually beaten and violated beyond what can be withstood. After two years in a coma, and some experimental surgery that replaced crushed bones with metal, this young person awakens -- only to find out that Mom has married the father of one of the abusers! Well, I wouldn't stick around either.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Shame, the name the young person chooses, takes out veng

This has to be my favorite debut I've read in a very long time. Liv is an incredible young writer and has such a way of writing that draws you through a story in a very personal manner. I've read books in first-person narrative before, but never in this way. Generally, I find myself judging the character based on how they are feeling at a certain time in the book, but I found myself more feeling the same feelings as the main character "Shame" and unsure if I should hope for the character's take ...more

I charged through this book in two sittings. Poor Shame never gets a break so it was hard to put it down without getting fidgety and wanting to know what happens next. And then it ended with a cliff hanger!

At first, I was slightly put off by Shame's angsty and somewhat pretentious attitude, but then it became abundantly clear why Shame was that way and it made a lot of sense. As the story progressed the author did an excellent job showing the main character's growth as the attitude started to dr

Fantastic roller coaster of a book. VERY visual. There were moments where I was too in the moment and felt as if truly there. Mind you, some of the scenes were so visual and fantastically gruesome, I’d need a moment to get the video out of my head and eyes back on the book.
Love the character development and the cliff hanger questions such as injuries, consequences of the surgeries, consequences of the relationships made, etc. What’s the deal with the car??
Hands down- my favorite scene is the par

I started reading this book having no idea what it was about, but I have to say I don't regret it. From the first page I was drawn in; first sentence to be specific. The unique way the main charterer was pro trade really caught my eye. Through the whole book I went back and forth trying to figure out if they were bad or good, when the entire time i realize they are just lost and angry. Although I am upset that I will have to wait so long for the next one! ...more

It's like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets Middle Sex.The gender ambiguity coupled with the vague use of personal pronouns was bold and executed masterfully when applied. It's refreshing to see a book with a genderless protagonist/ antagonist. ...more

This is quite easily the most twisted, down-right dark and fucked up novel I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. No, seriously. From the very beginning I was shocked and kind of appalled by all of the things happening to Shame, an androgynous character that we never really learn the gender of (though it is heavily implied that Shame is a female, kind of at least). She’s bullied at school and then horrendously mutilated and left for dead by her classmates. When s

This read was a stretch for me in the genre. It pleasantly turned into a great reading experience. I loved the author's ability to develop a character and location, just enough to frame it up. While at the same time, leaving plenty of room for me to add my own color. The ambuigity that surrounds the main character's gender/sexuality is a welcome change. This ambiguity allows you to get wrapped up in the character's development. Creating independence from the labels we each may naturally place on ...more

This book is a departure from what I usually read and it was a refreshing change. The amiguity of the protagonist's identity really intrigued me. This amiguity caused me to become more invested in the book as I had to imagine certain things for myself and "fill in the blanks." I couldn't help but make the text more personal to me which I believe was the author's intention. I enjoyed the pacing of the book and it held my interest from start to finish. The dramatic unfolding of events coupled with ...more

This book sucked me in as soon as I opened it. I swung from feeling pity and heartache for Shame, to hating the character, and back again. After whipping through it in under a week, I can honestly say the novel didn't disappoint in the least--my main problem is desperately wanting the second and third installments in the trilogy to be written NOW so I can read them! Very well-written and intriguing, Shame's story will pull you in, mess with your head, and leave you wanting in the best possible w ...more

*I received this book free to review on my blog, however, all thoughts are 100% my own*

This book is fantastic. It is just a horrifically different take on books that I could hardly put down. You first walk in with this person stating that they are always getting bullied, big time. Which leads to even a bigger form of bullying, an assault actually.

Once that happens there is no holding back the revenge of it.

At the last page, you will wish you had book two in your hands right then.

I don't typically write reviews but I was so impressed with this author's debut, I am compelled to do so. Well written...magnetic lead character that draws you in from the start. Imagine Lisbeth Salander (TGWTDT) just a lot edgier and darker! My only disappointment is having to wait for the next book. ...more

This book is amazing beyond. With a dive into a world that is hard to come by it left me guessing from page one. A major dive into a world I had a hard time grasping at first but soon the I sat back and let the world engulf me. I can not wait to read more about this series. Keep writing Liv and I will keep reading! ;)

Received in exchange for a honest review.

this is trippy and freaky and twisted. Really really twisted.

Shame which is this young lady’s nickname due to all the hurtful words people said to her for so many years had a rough terrible childhood. Her mom loved her but did what she had to to survive and some of it trickled down onto her daughter. Life for Shame was hard. She wasn’t liked except by Cassie who eclipsed her and in a way used her. Shame helped buoy Cassie and was sort of like a project to

I can honestly say that I have NEVER read a book like this one. It was dark, and deep and just different. And it was amazing. It kind of had the same feel as zombie by Joyce Carol Oates. Except this time, instead of being in the mind of a serial killer, you’re in the mind of the victim who is now taking their revenge.

And having the story told through the victim’s eyes, through their mind, is remarkable enough, but the author took it one step further. The narrator simply goes by the name “Shame.”

I rarely, if ever, read fiction, so I was very hesitant in starting this journey. I was barely into the first chapter and realized what I was getting myself into. Violence and negativity usually turn me off, but I honestly could not put the book down. There is something about the main character that confuses you as a reader. You want to sympathize after each mishap despite how horrendous the act may be. The relationships the main character develops with others through the book sheds light on the ...more

MIND BLOWING! From the first sentence, "I am ugly." to the last sentence, "I see you." this book had me glued to the pages! I read this book in one night... SERIOUSLY, ONE NIGHT! In my opinion this book was brilliantly written. It had me emotionally attached to the main character so much so that at times I felt my own heart racing. Get this, I am NOT a revengeful person, and yet I wanted this character to get revenge... for me! I felt like I was there with The Shamed in every situation. Heck, I' ...more

Let me start off by saying that the extent to which I venture into this genre begins with me cursing and ends with me binge watching Criminal Minds on tv. Which if you're catching what I'm throwing atcha, means this book was/is WAY left field for me. Not only have I never read anything like it before, I never thought I would ever read anything like it.
After closing my book my first thought was "That was a fun ride" and my second was "Damn, that was an easy read." Now... I don't mean elementary

If I had to give this book a one-word review, it would be Fantastic! The book cover asks the question, Are you ready for it? Not only am I ready for it, but I am eagerly awaiting Book Two. There was never a dull moment and, at the risk of neglecting my children, I finished this book the same day it was started. Full of drama, suspense, love, hate, and of course, revenge, the book somehow made you sympathize with the main character, despite the horrific acts of violence. It takes a creative writi ...more

I have to say that this book totally drew me in from the first chapter, and it's not usually the kind of fiction that I read. I loved the cadence and lyricism of the writing, it is very particular like Mamet or Diaz but in totally different genres. As a visual reader, I was drawn in and could "see" this world and its denizens with crystal clarity. Fantastic debut by a young writer whose maturity shines through in the writing. I read it in a few days, and often stayed up late reading. One of the ...more

This novel wrapped me in from the very beginning. The darkness that lives within the main character Shame is deeply complex. The gruesome nature of what happened to Shame, leads Shame on a journey of revenge. Prepare yourself for a dark, twisted, AMAZING read! Unique & Unpredictable

In The Mind of Revenge by Liv Hadden takes readers on an unforgettable, unique and unpredictable journey with Shame, whose life initially appears to be a series of random, bad breaks. However, when it seems things may take a turn, hopefully for the better, we soon discover that there is even more to Shame's story than just a string of poor decisions or bad luck.
