Hope of Ages Past: An Epic Novel of Faith, Love, and the Thirty Years War will amaze you as Bruce Gardner takes his passion for religious history and military to spin a tale that is mesmerizing and thrilling. You can tell Gardner spent much time in research as he immerses his readers into a bloody war that shaped Central Europe into the present-day countries and state religions it has today.
When you read Hope of Ages Past, you feel as if Bruce Gardner peeled back the walls of times and g

In 1618, accountant’s son Peter Erhart and military advisor’s son Hans Mannheim witness an outrage in Prague, Bohemia. The two Catholic governors of this Holy Roman Empire province are tossed from a tower by their Lutheran colleagues. Hans has a moment of panic, and temporarily flees. Peter finds Hans and his kindness manages to bring the younger boy back from his fear.

By 1629 Peter has become an assistant pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Magdeburg, Germany. He’s happily marri

Hope of Ages Past by Bruce Gardner is a historical romance that takes place during the period called The Thirty years war. This is the period that followed Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg. I learned about Martin Luther in high school. I learned about the Protestant Reformation in high school. But high school didn’t teach me nearly as much about what religious war means and how it affected the lives of everyday people as reading Hope of Ages ...more

Life on the Banks of a Turbulent River

I remember seeing a quote some time ago about the course of history being like a river, but that life was lived on the banks.

This book does a fantastic job of showing "life on the banks" of the turbulent river that was the 30 Years' War. This is not something I'm familiar with from my extensive reading of historical fiction. So, it was fun to read something new, but at times I felt a little lost about all of the bigger picture that wa

The thirty-Year War in Europe in 1618AD, was brutal and harsh. Yet, there were stories of perseverance, love, piety, bravery and duty to be found then. This is one such story. Peter, a German Lutheran minister, saves a young catholic boy not knowing that their paths would cross many years later. Meanwhile, settling in Magdeburg, Peter has built himself a life, right before forces of opposition march against the city and lay siege to it. Within the chaos, Peter comes across Anna, who has fawned o ...more

This is my first time reading the author. Now and then I like to step out of my comfort zone and read a bit of historical fiction. I really enjoyed this book. I’ve been reading this on and off for several weeks. It’s not the kind of book you can read through, every word, every scene needs to be savoured. Hope of Ages Past covers a lot of historical events. The author takes time in developing the word and characters. I

Author Bruce Gardner will take readers back in time to AD 1618 in his novel. This novel tells the story of Peter Erhart, a German Lutheran, who finds himself aiding a Catholic boy by the name of Hans Mannheim. Erhart and Mannheim soon grow up but find themselves at odds with the world around them due to their different faiths. When war breaks out, Erhart, now a minister, must learn not only how to survive, but encourage and protect those around him. While doing so, he also comes across many peop ...more

One of the best historical novels I have read.

This book has a huge cast of characters. One thing I do love about this book is that they introduce you to the characters at the beginning of the book so when you come across them in the book you kind of have an idea of who they are. I’m not generally into historical novels but this one sounded pretty interesting so I jumped in. I have to say that I am glad I did. This book is a fast moving story full of love, and suspense during Europe’s 30 years w

Historical visit to the 30 years war

This historical novel takes on the events and the times of the 30 years war in Europe. The religious issues with the Catholics and the Lutherans were a major part of this historical time in the past development of the world. The book includes a detailed map of what was happening and where it was happening. This is a detailed book with descriptions that are so specific you feel like you are right there in the scene. Get to know the lives and events that took p

WOW, I am blown away by this epic story.
I learnt things about religion and the difference between Protestant and Catholic religions. Why they were fighting each other in the 17th Century.
This was a book about history and faith, but it was also was a love story, between two people who had to go through the harshest times, ever, to be together.
I am not a religious person, but this story, was more than a person's beliefs, it displayed the way fanatics can cause such strife and disaster

This book has a lot going on

Hope of Ages Past is a melting pot of genres: history, romance, and action among others. It’s a lot but somehow it works. I enjoyed the plot and the characters. As you’re doing started, it’s a lot of background information but push through and you’ll be super happy you did when it all comes together.
