I'm new to the novel writing game, and I've been reading many different things about plot. I have to say this book has helped solidify for me some of the notions that I was having problems with. I have learned that there are many ways to say the same thing about plotting, but you have to hear it in the way that makes sense to you. This book made it make sense to me, which is fantastic. I am working the tools and am excited to see what comes of it all.

I listen to Adrienne Bell on a couple of podcasts: her own ‘the misfit’s guide to writing indie romance’

And occasionally she fills in on The Writer’s Well

This week she was talking to Rachael Herron and Rachael was raving about how Adrienne had solved her plot problem for her in minutes. Evidently she offers this as a private service as well.
Oh now… Rachael mentioned her book and I went and had a look at a sample and then I bought it.
You’re doing Nanowrimo, YOU DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS my brain shouts at me.
Shutup, brain.

Most writing advice, especially with respect to plotting, is very formulaic - but this advice gets into the nitty gritty of WHY your character makes the decisions they do. She has some editable worksheets and some YouTube videos.
It helps if you’ve read her recent work ‘Hook’ as she uses the main characters from it as examples, but you can probably pick it up without it.

I get so annoyed with stories where it is just too plot driven; something happens and there is no reason for the character to behave the way they do. Or worse, for them to behave OUT of character. [if you set up your hero as carrying around his grandmother’s wedding ring for months trying to pick the right time to propose but then he takes the heroine to Vegas and they wake up after a drunken two day binge married and without the ring on her finger, I am going to ragequit your book.]
I have been fiddling for a little while and I confess, it isn’t easy, but I really like it as a method.
It makes great sense that each decision you make pushes you down a funnel towards less choices… or harder ones.
I like it.

I'm a bit of a craft book junkie and the blurb on this book for the writing period it teaches was interesting enough for me to buy it. I'm a bit on the fence. The way the book is structured, it's very disorganized. I am by no means a writing novice and some of the things she advocates in this book gave me pause, like the three Vital Questions in a romance being the same for both the hero and heroine. That can be the case, but it is by no means a necessary feature for outlining a decent romance novel.

The author uses her own set of lingo for writing terms, but it wasn't always explained right away what she meant. She gives an example of an outline of one of her own books at the end, but I would have liked to see more examples sprinkled throughout the book, and preferably examples from books she hasn't written herself as well. At one point the author makes the assumption that the reader has at least written already one book, which I thought was a bit weird; it doesn't say anywhere that this method is for advanced users only, so that came a bit out of nowhere.

I know my review comes across of as negative, but I did get some nuggets of wisdom from this book and it did gave me some ideas I will use when I start outlining my next novel.

Great book on writing. Finally understood character arc! Thank you! Kudos to Adrienne Bell for clear and precise craft book.

I've read so many books on the craft of writing. But this is a keeper. The author did not flog the reader with her way or the highway and she didn't put down us pantsers either.

I read it quickly and it solidified many areas that did not resonant for me about writing.

Despite the title, I’d describe this book as more about character than plot (which was great, because it’s actually just what I needed). I don’t know if I’ll actually use the funnel worksheet, but I found it very helpful to have some of the specifics of how to craft a character arch and tie it into decisions/consequences spelled out.

this was the most unpromising book I have ever tried to work with. Far to complicated and no use at all.
