~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. A lot of it was very good, but there were a couple things that left me a bit "meh." I always enjoy this authors writing, so in that regard, this was another well written book. The pace, for the most part, was OK. This author's books are always long drawn out affairs so I went into this one expecting that. Most of the book was well paced, and I never grew bored or felt the need to skim. That said, I felt this one could have probably ended 15-20% sooner than it did. Overall, though the plot remained engaging for the most part. The mystery kept me guessing for the majority of the book. Last, it was all wrapped up in an OK happy for now ending. I suspect since this is the start of a new series we will be seeing this couple in upcoming books.
~HERO~
DAMIAN...Damian's character was certainly one of the "very good" aspects in this book. He was smokin' hot. He was alpha. He was sweet. He was a bada$$ cop. I loved his interaction with his family. He had the patience of a SAINT when it came to Kerry. I liked his character a lot.
~HEROINE~
KERRY...Whereas Damian was a positive aspect Kerry was one of the things that left me feeling "meh." I didn't like her AT ALL. Look, I am notoriously hard on heroines, I admit that, but Kerry was god awful (IMO). She was b!tchy. She was rude (especially to people who were trying to help her). She came across cold. She flew off the handle all the time. OK, she had a FEW decent moments, but I just didn't find her personality very likable and honestly didn't see what Damian saw in her. Dude was a saint for sure.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
Another of the positive aspects of this one was the fantastic cast of secondary characters. I ADORED Damian's sister Bella. I liked Kerry's friend Marya. I hope she gets her own HEA. I also really liked a couple of Damian's fellow officers.
~HEAT LEVEL~
Lowish. This was fairly slow burn, but it worked well in the context of the story. When we do get to the sexy times, they were suitably hot. I am riding the fence on whether I think this couple had good on page chemistry or not. They had...comfortable chemistry, but it didn't sizzle off the page.
~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~
Medium...story wise. Low...relationship wise. The mystery aspect provides all the angst in this one. The relationship is pretty solid and drama free from the start. Apart from some annoying cliché misunderstandings that I will touch upon in a sec. Neither were virgins. It had been awhile since Kerry had slept with anyone. Damian was only two months celibate and appeared to be a player before he gets with Kerry. There was no OM drama. Which brings me to the second reason this didn't get a higher rating. There was some OW drama, and this was one of the things that had me a little annoyed. Maybe annoyed is too strong of a word, but there was really NO point to the stage five clinger ex fuck buddy of Damian's being included in this book at all. There was enough other stuff going on, and all it did was turn me off Damian a bit. Especially the nasty scene 70% into the book. I wish authors would start being a bit more creative and stop using the same old "ex that can't take a hint and has to cause trouble by coming on to the hero in front of the heroine while spewing sexual details about what they had done together" tired cliché. <--- just the fact that scenario could fit half of the romance books released every month tells you how very overused as a plot device it is.
~IN THE END~
I enjoyed it for the most part. Did it blow me away? No. This author is a fantastic writer, and that shows, no doubt there. I love that she writes about older characters (Damian was 44 and I have no clue how old Kerry was, but 40 maybe?). I appreciate that usually the relationships are mature and the characters act and respond to conflict like mature adults. Now, that wasn't 100% true in this one thanks to some OW drama and misunderstandings that was more new adult in nature than for two characters in their 40's, but for the most part, I find her books to fit that statement. Had the plot been a little tighter (book shorter) and the author had left out the (ya I am going to say it AGAIN) cliché OW drama and misunderstandings, I most likely would have gone with a 4-Star rating. As it stands this still gets a very respectable 3-Stars and I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next book in this series.

I have enjoyed every Freya Barker book I have ever picked up. Her books always provide me with a smirk-worthy level of entertainment as in addition to the intrigue of a good mystery and few murders and maybe a fight or two, Ms. Barker always supplies a healthy serving of humor, spicy sensuality, adult level romance, and authentic characters that I would enjoy knowing. I wasn’t familiar with the law enforcement terminology of keeping your 6, but I had an inkling of what it would mean, and it was an excellent title for this engaging tale. I adored FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Gomez and loved the humor make available by the family dynamics of his intrusive relatives. I am already looking forward to the next installment of this new series.

2nd Read: Audiobook version. I loved the narrators. Both are favorites of mine and I actually enjoyed this book even more the second time around due to how they brought this book to life. I highly recommend the audiobook.
1st Read: Kerry is a no-nonsense and independent woman. She's 2 years fresh off a bad marriage and has learned that she can only depend on herself. She's got a bit of a chip on her shoulders when her and Damian meet again 2 years later but some of the was due to their previous encounter.
Damian is a bit of a player. His job is more important than a relationship but it's not in your face in this book. He meets up with Kerry and while it is rocky at first, he's recognizes something special in her.
These two met 2 years prior when Damian is one of the agents that rescued Kerry from a kidnapping. While he recognized his attraction at the time, she was married and off limits. This has him focusing more on his job than her as a victim. When he walks into her book store 2 years later, Kerry is a little less inviting in her greeting due to that experience.
As you can see, this meant for a rocky beginning for this main couple. What I liked was that it was enough to be believable but not over the top to make it annoying. I enjoy reading about older couples, 40's in this case, due to more mature issues in a storyline and not unnecessary drama.
The new case that has these two reconnecting was interesting and made for an easy read. I also liked the addition of Damian's family. They brought entertainment to this couples lives as Kerry is once again in danger. Overall, a really good read.

This book drew me in right from the beginning with Keeping 6. Kerry has her own bookstore/coffee shop. In walks Damian, a blast from her semi recent past. FBI Special Agent in Charge, Damian Gomez, is a man who was the officer on duty that rescued her when she was kidnapped. Damian never could forget her and can't seem to get her off his mind. Damian never acted on his feelings for Kerry at that time because she was married to a jerk so he just let his feelings subside and now here she is and the feelings pop up and are stronger than ever. Kerry is no longer married and seems to think Damian is a jerk himself. She tries to ignore Damien and the feelings he seems to draw out of her. Yet these two have this intense chemistry and the sparks these two have is really hot . I loved how they draw the sparks off one another. Damian and his office is pulled into an international investigation into trafficking of rare books and manuscripts. Now the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from Kerry who might well be involved. Kerry is this sassy, strong woman who is so law abiding that I couldn’t believe how Damian would believe she could be involved yet he was struggling to fight his feelings so he was trying to grasp at straws to stay away from her and his feelings. While Kerry finds herself the target of criminals and her life is in danger. At first she thought she was a random victim of crime in her new bookstore but soon, her life is in danger from criminals that are part of trafficking of rare books and they believe Kerry has something that belongs to them. Will Kerry and Damian realize that her being in danger and his crimes are linked? Will he be able to save her life ? And will they end have getting the HEA that was denied them several years before? Trust me this is one awesome read , full of danger, intrigue, suspense, passion, sparks and mystery. I couldn’t put this read down and hope there is more in this new series coming soon!!!

I picked up this book because of the narration, because this is a new to me author.
I am so glad I did I was sucked into the story. Kerry stumbles along the way but she comes out with minor bruising of the heart. But what I love is the second half is worth the first have of her struggles.
The suspense and mystery that this book has keep me glued to my headset.
Damian is kinda awesome and when we meet his family we understand why he is the way he is. His family is a big part of the story and how not only they help Kerry but you see Damian in another light as well.
I can honestly say that I am going to devour this series whole. On to the next.

The mystery hooked me from the start and kept me interested throughout but... there were things that didn't work for me:
- It felt like the heroine found herself in more life threatening situations than sexy times or relationship building moments.
- How many times does a person have to end up in the hospital due to a crime investigation before she remember to turn on the house alarm!!??
- The investigation regarding itself was a series of bungled up mistakes and reactions by the authorities to what the bad guys were clearly manipulating. It felt like the authorities did little more than take the heroine's statements to her continued misfortunes.
- The heroine was completely averse to accepting help to the point of being rude.
These might be pet peeves, but they detracted from my enjoyment nonetheless:
- The Italian pronunciation for words by characters who of Mexican descent. Máma instead of mamá, pápa instead of papá, Mária, instead of María
- The Mexican family treating the over 40YO like a teenager, especially the part about the hero's mother still buying him underwear
- Since when are Catholics the masters at guilt trips and emotional manipulation?

Keeping 6 is the first book in a new series from Freya Barker and once again, she does NOT disappoint!! I ADORE her style, the way she writes is unique and feels effortless! It just flows so nicely that before you know it, the story has come to an end...WAY too soon, imo!
Kerry is a strong, mature, sassy heroine who has FINALLY kicked her no-good, abusive husband to the curb and is living her dream....and then, the intrigue begins! Kerry is sucked into a nightmare involving stolen rare books, murder, mystery and is fighting her attraction to an FBI agent from her past! I couldn't get enough of the chemistry between Kerry and Damian, who will stop at NOTHING to protect her!!! Damian has never really forgotten Kerry as they met previously while she was still married, but he's not into relationships and makes no secret about that fact....until he's forced to open his eyes (and his heart) during the intrigue surrounding Kerry and her book store!
This ABSOLUTELY RIVETING story is chock FULL of everything I LOVE about Freya's books!!! The hilarious banter, the slow-burn build up, the emotion, the strong family connections, the AWESOME secondary characters that make this story come alive for me....everything comes together and makes THIS another MUST READ from Ms. Barker! I can't WAIT for the next book in this series!!!

After getting out of a very unhappy marriage, Kerry has recently opened her second bookstore in Durango, Colorado. She also serves up coffee and pastries to the regular town bookworms that come in each week.
When Special Agent Damien Gomez walks into her store she is taken back to the last time their paths crossed after she was kidnapped a few years back. Damien is surprised to see Kerry again and can’t help noticing that she no longer has a wedding ring on her finger. He thought she was beautiful the first time they met but now that she is single he might end up being a more regular coffee drinker.
Things don’t go as planned though when Kerry finds herself caught up in an investigation into rare books being stolen and sold. Her store gets broken into, she gets run off the road and a lot more happens during this fast paced story.
A romance is blooming between Damien and Kerry that finds him trying to do his job but protect her at the same time. There is a high level of suspense and plenty to keep me engaged in this very eventful story. I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the dual narration.

3/9/22 - This is book 1 in the Rock Point series. This is a spin-off from another series that I haven’t read, there’s some characters mentioned but it didn’t impact my enjoyment in any way.
I really enjoyed this. A good mix of mystery/suspense, romance, and a little bit of humor with a compelling plot and pacing. I also liked that the characters are older (in their 40s). Barker does a good job of world building. I enjoyed getting to know not only Kerry & Damian but also their friends, coworkers and even some family. (Damian’s family was so much fun!). Enough to peak my interest about the secondary characters without it taking anything away from the main couple.
Damian & Kerry are both strong, independent characters who are happy being single. But there’s an undeniable pull. A series of events puts book store owner Kerry in danger and at the middle of an art trafficking ring. Damian is an FBI agent working to solve a complex crime and keep Kerry safe. I loved the action, mystery, & investigation just as much as the sexy scenes. Damian and Kerry definitely have great chemistry.
There’s a great HFN and I’m looking forward to binging the rest of the series.

I loved Christian Fox and Muffy Newtown. They’re a great match with each other, the characters, and Barker’s writing. Such an easy book to listen to.

I loved Kerry! She was a real spitfire and her attitude captured Damian’s attention and held it.
This story line was intriguing and the further into the mystery I went, the more captivated I was. My imagination was running free with each turn of the page as the case Damian is working on hits close to home where Kerry is concerned.
Interwoven with the bits of danger and drama was a heart melting romance. Kerry and Damian are fire together and I loved every moment of their journey to a perfect happy ever after.

Yes just what we have come to expect as signature Freya Barker. Good interesting writing and It’s not all rainbows and unicorns. The protagonists have lived a good part of their lives and as so have experiences that shape them and their way of interacting with others. And the road to HEA is bumpy to say the least. Well worth a read. To my way of reading a few continuity issues in the ARC PROVIDED that are not glaring nor really effect the reading body of the story experiance(fixed in purchased copy)... (Edited)I will (now have) be purchasing a copy once officially published. Give it a go

If your looking for a book with older wiser characters you need to check out Freya Barker's books. I love that she likes to write about older people and Damian and Kerry are further along in their lives. I loved both of these characters so much. Damien is very happy being an older single man but fate is having none of that as it keeps throwing Kerry back into his life time and again. The pretty, feisty woman behind the counter is an unexpected surprise. Not at all unpleasant, especially since her finger that use to hold a wedding ring is now bare. Her wild hair, boho style and silvery grey eyes suddenly hold a lot of promise. But when his office is pulled into an international investigation into trafficking of rare books and manuscripts, the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from the woman who might well be involved. Easier said than done, since fate seems determined to throw them together.
If your looking for a book with older wiser characters you need to check out Freya Barker's books. I love that she likes to write about older people and Damian and Kerry are further along in their lives. I loved both of these characters so much. Damien is very happy being an older single man but fate is having none of that as it keeps throwing Kerry back into his life time and again. I didn’t think Freya could top her Cedar Tree series, but reading this book has me so excited and feeling so good, she’s done it again!
Once again we have great leads, a strong contingent of secondary characters and potentially great future stories and a mad cap bunch of family that just add a depth & richness to the story, I absolutely loved it.

Once again there is a lot of suspense and drama that will keep you wondering what’s coming around the next page. Freya Barker has done it again; a sexy suspenseful story with unexpected twists and turns. A great start to a new series, and a superb introduction to secondary characters that make you anticipate subsequent books!
Though we’ve met Damian and Kerry briefly in a previous series, this is a complete standalone novel. He’s a protective alpha and she’s as sassy as can be. I love the fact that her heroines are independent. No timid princesses. Combine with her characters being more mature and have experience in the outside world, and you have the perfect recipe for a fantastic read.
But the suspense is what keeps me coming back for more. I enjoy a good love story like anyone else, but the way it’s so intricately woven with mystery and suspense makes Freya Barker a must at every release!

Wow!!! This was my first book by Ms. Barker and HOLY WOW!!!!!
I admired Kerry so much through out the book!! She was strong and determined and feisty!!! I love to read books that have a strong female heroine who gives the hero a run for his money....which she did with Damian.....
Damian....oh my.....😍😍....he was the perfect combination of hot ALPHA man who took care of the women he loved!!!
Keeping 6 is a fine example of romantic suspense and I immediately one clicked Cabin 12.....I’m diving in now!!!

Freya is someone I’ve only been reading for a couple of months. I love her! All of her books have been great. Lots of suspense and love with older leading men and women for the most part. I can’t say enough, read them all!

This book drew me in right from the beginning. The character development is very clear. Kerry and Damian feel real to me. Like visiting old friends. The progression of their relationship reminds me that life happens and you have to hang on or let life pass you by. Damian definitely the type of Alpha you love to read about but Kerry drew me in. Her character and personality was believable. Actually the interaction between the two of them was like Freya managed to get in my head and pull out what love and romance should be.
I love the emotion that this story is written with. You feel as if you are part of the story and not just reading it.

Freya Barker has a real talent for creating characters that you immediately warm to. Without having met these characters before, having not read the earlier books linked to them, I didn’t find any difficulty in immersing myself in their story. Both Kerry and Damian are extremely likable characters and their developing relationship was refreshingly unique.
When I saw that Kerry was a bookshop/cafe owner, I had flashbacks to another hugely popular series and whilst initially wary by the similarities between settings, I was relieved to find that this was not the main focal point of the story. That instead went to the ongoing drama that Kerry found herself embroiled in thanks to her interest in buying and selling rare books. When she unexpectedly finds herself the target of criminals, she assumes she is the victim of an isolated incident but when she realises what has been targeted she becomes aware that her business is linked to a rare book which is wrongly assumed to be in her possession.
Having met before when Kerry was kidnapped (a story which was covered in another book by the author), Damian continues to be captivated by her and when he finds out that she is connected to his investigation once again, he is torn, as he was before, between his job and his personal life. Kerry, having been married when Damian first met her was, is now divorced and Damian struggles to reason between his heart and his head where she is concerned. Clearly, it was a struggle that didn’t take much consideration as he and Kerry quickly start acting on the spark that they clearly share.
As the story progresses, readers are taking on a mysterious journey as Damian and his team and professional acquaintances try to find out who is behind the attacks on Kerry. What Damian doesn’t know, at first, is that the answers to all of his questions fall closer to home than he could have ever expected.
This was another interesting story from Freya Barker. However, it did seem very long winded, despite the captivating storyline. I’m afraid I did find myself skimming over some pages and I lost focus on occasion. For me, the story would have been a bigger hit had it been a little less drawn out. That said, the story and especially its conclusion was unexpected and a real treat to read and enjoy.

The supporting cast of characters add so much depth to all her stories and this one is no exception.
It’s no secret that Freya Barker is one of my all-time favorite authors. This was another brilliant read and I’m certainly looking forward to more of this series.

I have had a hit and miss with this author's books, but this one I really enjoyed.
Kerry Emerson finally feels like her life is back on the right track. Between being kidnapped and her husbands abuse life seems fairly calm these days. And then she sees 'him' again. FBI Special Agent Damian Gomez.
Damian just wanted a cup of coffee and never would have expected to see Kerry again. The same Kerry who is a totally different person to the one he rescued. And one that he was attracted to but was put off by the wedding band she wore. A wedding band that seems missing now. But things are never as easy as that. His office is dragged into an international investigation of trafficking rare books and manuscripts, and the women he is becoming infatuated with might just be involved. But it seems that fate is determined to put the two of them together.
I loved the characters in this book. I loved Kerry's style, wild hair, boho style, sweet! And she was a feisty and sassy one. Damian my type of alpha. I’m a big fan of romantic suspense books because they incorporate two of my favourite genres. There’s a mystery to solve and two people hoping to find their way to each other. I get this in Keeping 6 and the icing on this cake is our hero and heroine are in their 40s; an age group I easily relate to.
I really enjoyed the characters of Kerry Emerson and Damian Gomez. I found Kerry to be a strong, smart and resourceful woman who was a good match for the grounded and surprisingly romantic Damian. They just clicked in all manner of ways.
The mystery kept me guessing until the end and I enjoyed the insight into world of high value books. Damian works with some interesting people but I did feel there were too many of them. I forgot who was who and found myself having to backtrack to figure out who was who.
In addition to the mystery, there was plenty of humour, with Damian’s family providing much of it. With five sisters and a mother, I am surprised he’s as calm as he appears.
Fans of the Cedar Trees series will be happy to find there’s a cross over with some characters.

I received an early Arc on this novel.
I know I say this in a lot of my reviews, but truly I have only a few authors, who never cease to amaze me.
We learned about Kerry in Kim & Mal's book, and since it had been a while I wasn't sure i'd remember, but see with Freya it all comes back in a flash.
I love Damien & Kerry, I love the banter, I love that she doesn't take his "crap" yet he knows he's messing up. I look forward to more novels from this series.
OH and I love catching up with old friends.

I’m not sure how or where I stumbled onto this book but I’m so glad that I did. This is the first story I’ve read from this author and I really enjoyed the writing style and the characters. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Three and a half stars.
Kerry Emerson is a divorced woman with two book shops, she is finally starting to feel like she's on an even keel when FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Gomez walks into her book store. Two years ago (and I'm guessing in a different series) Kerry was kidnapped and beaten up to try to find out the whereabouts of her BFF, Damian was the FBI agent who was first to find her.
Having thought she had left all the drama behind her, Kerry is soon embroiled in Damian's FBI investigation involving stolen rare books. There are break-ins, inside jobs, intra-departmental rivalries, reclusive millionaires and loud families galore.
I liked this but I didn't love it, and Damian was the cause. He felt too sexist, too aggressive, too prone to boxing Kerry into corners or kissing her in a way which felt controlling. One of the things I have really enjoyed about Freya Barker's other heroes is that they are mature enough to have either got over the macho BS or to have learned to control it, Damian was too much like a dog with a juicy bone (growling at anyone who tried to take it away) whilst simultaneously pushing Kerry away because 'he has a personal code' - yeah right!
Also, I received mixed messages about Kerry. at the start of the book she was all Bo-Ho smocks and hippy clothing then she seemed to morph into leggings and sloppy tops followed by skin-tight dresses.
Overall, this is an enjoyable romantic/ suspense novel, I liked Kerry and the plot was intriguing yet believable, there was a good feeling of misdirect which I like in a suspense novel.

Keeping 6 is start of a new series, Rock Point, by Freya Barker. I love Freya's past books and this is a good start but I do feel like something is missing. I didn't connect with the characters this time and often felt like I'm missing backstory about the department/crew that Damian works with. Pacing felt a little off as well but it didn't ruin the story for me and I still wanted to know how the story would unfold for Damian & Kerry. I'm interested to see who from the team will be featured in the next story and I really want to see Damian's sister, Bella, featured in her own story. Keeping 6 isn't perfect but it's far from a complete pass so give it a shot and I'd like to know what you thought about it. 3.5 out of 5 Stars for Keeping 6 by Freya Barker

As always Freya Barker had me hooked from the first page with Keeping 6. With impeccable writing she weaves words into a story so captivating I was glued to the pages for hours. An amazing start to a new series, Keeping 6 is full of romance, suspense, & mystery making it an addictive read!
One thing I love about Freya is she doesn’t stick to keeping her characters young and in their twenties. It’s so easy to relate to characters who are further along in their lives. There’s no games, no drama and over reactions. Just true to life characters written so perfectly it’s like you’re right there with them. Both Kerry and Damian are wonderful in so many ways.
Damian is a strong man, seemingly happy with his single life. That is until Kerry is thrust back into his life during an investigation. Kerry is a fiercely independent sweetheart who is loving her new life free of an unhappy marriage when Damian’s investigation leads him right back to her book store. As things heat up with the mystery of what he’s investigating, they’re also heating up between Damian and Kerry. Between the swoon worthy romance that builds with these two and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat this book is one you can’t put down!

DNF @36% but 150 pages... so I am counting this, it wasted my time, and so I will count it as a book read since some novellas are shorter than this book.
Overall couldn’t connect with either character and I was getting annoyed with the back and forth, and I just pretty much got bored and stopped caring. Haha

She's an intelligent, independent woman who has had enough of people pushing her around and he's used to everyone doing what he wants until their world's collide and it's up to the reader to sit back and enjoy the laughs and fireworks while waiting to see who will win in the end! A fun and enjoyable read or listen in my case. The audiobook was quite good and I love the dual narration!
