Familjen Knyckertz / The Pinchers #2

Familjen Knyckertz och gulddiamanten

Rate this book

It's something magical and very calming over the family thieves, with Ture who is the only one that don't want to lie or take something that isn't his. I would have loved the books as a kid but I do love them now as an adult too. Kids books is the perfect pallet cleanser when I'm in a reading slump or a mental slump. If I had kids around me I would definitely give them this series as it's a personal favorite.

Ps. be någon läsa högt för dig!

Läbi kriminaalide pere, kus õpetatakse ontlikku last valetama.

The Pincher family are all thieves and liars. They love to steal and cheat, except for Theo who gets a stomachache if he tries to tell a lie or do anything dishonest. It doesn't help that their next-door neighbor is a policeman! When Mr. and Mrs. Pincher leave Theo and his sister at home for the evening, Theo worries that they might be planning to steal the famous diamond on exhibit at the museum. His sister drags Theo along to visit their grandmother in jail, and they stage a prison escape and go looking for the diamond themselves.

This book is hilarious! It's so funny to see parents doing the opposite of what would be normal, encouraging their kids to lie and steal. Poor Theo, he just doesn't fit in. He's too honest and good. This book had me laughing and chuckling at all the silly escapades of the Pincher family. It might be as simple as stealing the newspaper off their neighbor's porch each morning, or it might be an elaborate heist, but the Pinchers take every opportunity to use their thieving skills.

I loved the fun illustrations in each chapter and the cute character designs! What a fun book!

The Pinchers and the Diamon Heist - Anders Sparring and Per Gustavsson

5⭐️/ 5⭐️/ 5⭐️

This was another one that I was able to tag team some reading with my oldest! He read a bit to us and then I finished reading it to both of the big kids.

“It was very ridiculous. It was funny that they had putting to sleep cookies. And the costumes with the beards were so funny.”

“I really like the falling asleep cookies, that was ridiculous. Also, we like that Theo was very nice and that he only lied once.”

I loved reading this book to the kids because it was funny and we had lots to talk about as we read it and after! Having a whole family of criminals makes for a very fun read!

This book is a quick read full of pictures about a family full of thieves, except for Theo. He wants to be truthful and a police officer when he grows up. The family goes on a wild adventure to try and steal a big diamond.

I liked this one! It was quick and full of action. It was also full of humor. I liked the quirky characters and the pictures throughout. I think a lot of kids will enjoy this book!

Thanks so much to netgalley and gecko for the arc of this one in exchange for an honest review!

Enjoyable start to a series about a criminal family.

This makes a great early chapter book read for children who are reading alone and need something short to get their confidence up.

In the Pincher family, only Theo feels unwell when he lies. Everyone else lies and steals without a problem, even each other's things! Theo can't even pretend his dad didn't take their neighbour's (Paul Eesman's) morning newspaper.

When his parents decide to leave Theo and his sister alone to go... er 'see' the Diamond Exhibition, the children don't stay at home on their own for long. After all, bedtimes need a grown-up, and Granny is in jail not far away.

I certainly did feel for the kids at home alone, and very much enjoyed Granny and her jailbird friends. This feels like the start to the series, not one you'd read and then leave alone, you want to know what the family get up to next and if Theo can keep himself honest.

Nice translation, it's got a feel of other places to it in the writing, but could be set anywhere.

I liked the quizzes at the end (what kind of a thief are YOU?), and finding your own robber name.

A short read, and an engaging story.

For ages 6-9.

With thanks to the publisher for providing a sample reading copy.

The second book about this family of criminals has somewhat more action going on thus deserves some better points. Suppose the first book in series is generally often used more for introduction in a way...

So, all the main characters from the previous book are back in here as well, while also new ones are being introduced.
There is this uniquely big diamond exhibited in the town and naturally it also draws the attention of the parents. Kids are left home alone to put themselves to bed, but things don't go as smoothly as the parents expected, when promising ice-cream instead of brushing the teeth. Thus begans an adventure where bedtime stories need to be read, where grandma's are paid visits, where cookies come to play a crutial role and even some hearts are being given. Along with a very precious present.
Anyway, this was a much more fun book than the first episode with some action as well. Can't wait for the next books to be translated into Estonian.

Niilon elämä ei ole helppoa. Koko muu perhe on valehtelevia varkaita, mutta Niilo ei pysty valehtelemaan (eikä haluakaan, koska vatsa tulee valehtelusta kipeäksi) tai varastamaan esineitä. Eräänä päivänä hänen vanhempansa lukevat lehdestä timanttinäyttelystä ja siellä esillä olevasta valtavan kalliista kultatimantista. He tietysti järjestävät itsensä näyttelyyn ja lapset saavat jäädä kotiin.

Ibland vill man kunna dela ut halva stjärnor.

The book was neither exciting nor adventuresome, even it was easy to expect what is going to happen next. However somehow it still raises a big reflection in me about love and family values.

The notorious family did not get the diamonds 💎 but it turns out not a bad outcome to them because their son learned to lie. And the woman gave away the most valuable diamond that she stole to the man she loved. Even though it is about the criminals, something is good to pick up :))

Fina illustrationer. Roliga påhittiga namn.

Meet the Pinchers- a family or thieves. Well, besides poor little Theo who can't tell a lie without getting a stomach ache.
When Rob and Nic head out to a gallery and leave the kids alone for the night, Theo and Ellen go to the jail to spend the evening with their grandmother. After hearing the parents’ 💎 plans, they bust out to participate in the heist. That night Theo finally learns to 🤥 lie.
Both myself and Peanut have loved these illustrated chapter books. They’re great fun! We hope to see more from this slimy family in the future.

What worked:
The contrast in values between Theo and the rest of his family creates an amusing conflict. Theo cannot lie and gets a stomachache whenever he tries. He refuses to steal and feels stressed when he’s aware of his family’s thieving ways. His parents are crooks, his little sister wants to become a crook, and his grandmother lives in jail for being a crook. Living in that environment forces Theo to frequently deal with opposing emotions. He loves his family but he abhors breaking the law.
The book includes some interesting features that will appeal to emerging and reluctant readers. The opening pages present pictures and descriptions of each main character. Almost every page has a color illustration to enhance the story and help readers visualize the events. After the resolution, the author provides a short quiz to help readers recall important events and they can read the first chapter of the book’s sequel. Some fun pages allow readers to create their criminal names and determine the type of criminals that best fit them. It’s all in fun!
What didn’t work as well:
The synopsis reveals way too much information. The narrator recounts events in the plot but it doesn’t enhance the story with description or character development. Consequently, the book can be read in one sitting or a couple of days for those who need more time.
The final verdict:
The humorous tone and abundant pictures make the story more approachable and young readers will hopefully appreciate Theo’s honesty. This book is a quick read that should appeal to kids learning to read or those without the stamina to read for an extended time.

With thanks to ‘Books+Publishing’ magazine for the ARC and the opportunity to review.

Anders Sparring’s The Pinchers and the Diamond Heist is a first-in-series chapter book that ticks many boxes young primary school children love: comedy, crime and fun family connections.

Opening with introductions to the Pincher family, we learn about their likes and strengths and get a feel for the humour and style to follow, reminiscent of David Walliams. For instance, their first names are all puns based on thieving, which is the family trade. Our reluctant hero, the son, Theo, is the exception. He (much to his mother’s disappointment) cannot tell a lie and, worse still, wants to be a police officer when he grows up. A diamond heist is in the offing, and we see Theo attempting to foil his parents’ thieving plans.

The quirky headings for the short chapters hint at the upcoming events and conclude with cliffhangers, compelling readers to turn the page. The language (translated from its original Swedish) is accessible to the intended audience, as is the fast-paced action. Per Gustavsson’s full-colour illustrations are bright, appealing and well-integrated with the text, providing ‘extra’ content for readers to explore.

The full cast of characters, strategically-placed clues and slapstick comedy make this a terrific classroom read-aloud book, and independent readers will laugh at the silliness and enjoy understanding the adventure for themselves. The inclusion of some fun interactive ‘crime-based’ activities also cleverly extends reader engagement beyond the last page.

"The Pinchers" by Anders Sparring and Per Gustavsson is a delightful children's book with lighthearted humour and engaging storytelling. The narrative introduces readers to the quirky and lovable Pinchers family through entertaining character profiles that set the stage for future adventures. Each member of the family has a distinct personality, making the initial introductions not only fun but also memorable.
The vibrant and dynamic illustrations by Per Gustavsson perfectly complement Sparring's witty text. They play a crucial role in bringing the characters and their escapades to life, adding an extra layer of charm to the story. The connection between the text and illustrations ensures that young readers are constantly engaged, eagerly turning pages to see what happens next.
One of the standout features of "The Pinchers" is its ability to seamlessly weave humour into the narrative, making it an entertaining read for children and adults. The relaxed tone, coupled with the most mischievous antics of the Pinchers family, makes the book endearing and fun, leaving the readers with a smile.
Adding to the appeal, the book includes the first chapter of the next instalment in the series at the end. This sneak peek hooks readers, leaving them excited and impatient for more adventures with the Pinchers family.

The Pinchers are such a fun family and their friends are too. I laughed out loud when Cheater-Rita did push-ups and was so happy they took her to the diamond heist. Easy to read, fun illustrations in this chapter book filled with humor that motivates readers to keep going. Has a fun quiz at the end and also a thief name generator. I love fun gangster thief family stories with witty dogs.

The Pincher family are crooks – well all except for Theo who cannot lie or steal. This first in a new humorous heavily illustrated series introduces us to the family who all, including Sherlock the dog, wear criminal looking black eye masks. Laugh as they go to see Grandma Pincher in prison where she too is wearing a black eye mask. A funny beginning chapter book that might be perfect for a reluctant reader.
