This is a nicely produced, nicely written, warm book nominally about a mans experiences at the end of World War II. However, what Reinicke has done is to take this a box of her fathers letters she found and develop them into a satisfying, moving book about family life.
As we are taken on Bill "Buster" Cannons journey (hes just married and has been seperated from his wife) we also meet his family and have all the obscure and not-so-obscure references in his letters explained to us. This is enligh

America is quickly losing the remaining World War II veterans. There has been a lot of interest in collecting their stories. However, most of that interest is focused on the small portion of their lives that was spent in combat with the Axis powers. There isn't as much interest in their births, their formative years, their marriages and families, their post-war jobs, etc.

This was an outstanding read! Let me first preface this by saying this is not a book of war time heroics. This is a wide open door to the chaos that was the Cannon family.

Each chapter began with one or more of the letters home. After, it went on to explain why he wrote what he did and explore his family and his life. What this is, is an amazing snapshot into late 1945 Army Air Corp life! Being active duty myself, I can relate to some of his letters and the frustration (Although we have email and

What a gem. I'm so happy to have come across this story! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just turned 50 and am already one of those that are ranting "God, I miss the good ole' days" and "They just don't make em' like that anymore."
