Spenser's Risk by Andy Greenhalgh is a delightful and enjoyable new contemporary read with lots of dark humour highlighted by sarcastic undertones.
It was a very enjoyable book and I had a good time reading it. The characterization was good which was a big plus given the entire story heavily depended on the main protagonist, Spencer. He was very believable and pretty relatable. Even though he landed up in extreme situations, I was able to relate to his worries and dilemmas and hence, was able to ...more

Darkly comic in the best way, Spencer, a drama teacher is hapless and pretty hopeless, nevertheless the author and thus the reader are rooting for him right till the end. Anyone who’s ever gambled will appreciate the situations Spencer ends up in.
Read it in 2 days; I just had to find out what happened to him so stayed up deep into the night to finish it.
A really promising debut - I can’t wait for the next one!

3.5*
Spencer Leyton’s life is spiralling downhill. He has split from his wife, is virtually estranged from his kids, his career is in tatters, and he has a serious gambling problem. The irresponsible drama lecturer’s dire situation deteriorates further when he accepts a friend’s invitation to a high-stakes poker game. Our drunken and reckless protagonist’s ensuing catastrophic performance leaves him with a substantial debt to the wrong people. Can he redeem himself?

Witty and inventive. The misadventures of a drama professor who runs up gambling debts with the wrong person. I am sure that “Dr Spencer” would be able to explain the cathartic effect of watching our protagonist making such a mess of every thing, from his marriage and his finances to his (all too real) problems at the drama school. Most enjoyable.

Spencer’s Risk is an interesting story about a man who deals with the challenges of an addictive habit. A well written fast-paced read that is sure to draw you in from the beginning with a sensitive look at a man who is trying to come to grip with the reality of the poor choices he has made throughout his life. A touching story that is sure to stay with you long after reading.
