Very well written and gripping book that centers around the infamous Queen Boat Affair in Cairo, Egypt in 2001 where gay men were swept up in a raid in a gay discotheque. Hani relives his life before, during and after this horrific event where he’s left mute and traumatized afterwards by the horrible abuse by the Cairo vice squad. It’s not illegal to be gay in Egypt but the authorities arrested the men under the guise of the men being devil-worshipers and committing unlawful perverted acts. Lies ...more

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how living as a gay man is in Cairo, Egypt. The author describes the experiences so well and with such intimacy and beauty.
There are quite a few scenes that are violent in nature (physical and sexual) but they are necessary since it is part of the reality of being LGBTQ in this world.
