Shelves: horror
This is the very assured debut novel from Gary (who, maybe I ought to point out, I know and have worked with), a ghost/monster story that grips the reader and never really lets go. The first half, certainly, is one of the best things Ive read this year, the characters are strong and assured and the sense of location and atmosphere is exceptional. Three years ago Guy Renford found a knife-wielding burglar in his baby daughters bedroom. He forced him down the stairs, then out of the house, and smashed his skull to pieces on the road outside (its never quite clear why he feels so guilty about this!). Hes now out of the clink and hoping to reconnect with his family, but the family of his victim have other plans, plans that get out of hand. Rosie is an ex-stripper, planning to leave her abusive American husband after her latest trip to the ...more

Guy is a man who has been in jail for three years because of a murder he committed defending his child during a break-in, Rosie is a young woman who has lived through a series of horrific, abusive relationships and both of them are being drawn back to the deluged town of Stonegrave where an all-consuming cosmic horror has been unleashed in the name of revenge. There are phantasms abroad in the rain and no-one is sure what they are but they are beginning to develop a taste for slaughter.
