I read this as a companion to Cannery Row by John Steinbeck and highly recommend it. A.L. Lundy does a fabulous job of bringing to life the real people, the history, and the setting that Steinbeck portrays in Cannery Row. Tons of illustrations and fascinating biographies, this is a must read for anyone interested in how Cannery Row came to be.
Delightful accompaniment to Cannery Row! As a new resident of Monterey, I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the town and the true characters that have called it home.
I found the descriptions of the people to be very interesting. Not only did it give insight to who inspired the characters of Doc, Mack/Guy, and Dora, it provided a glimpse of the personal side of Steinbeck.
The second half of the book covers the minor places/events mentioned in Cannery Row, and while I didn't find it incredibly interesting, I'm sure there are readers who would.
