Consisting of ordinary Tokyo citizens resurrected from death, the Gantz team is conscripted by a mysterious black orb to fight bizarre, deadly aliens in a lethal game that promises a return to normal life... or oblivion. But the game's purpose is unclear, and the stakes are far greater than survival!
A disturbingly realistic science-fiction horror epic, Hiroya Oku's Gantz took Japan by storm, spawning an anime series, live action films, and video games. Visually stunning and explicitly adult, Gantz is not for the kids or the squeamish! This value-priced volume features over 650 pages of carnage, carnality, and craziness!
Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
This series has generated an unexpected huge appreciation of what manga can bring to the table for me. I am finding the pacing, use of limited exposition, sublime black and white artwork, and overall character led reality building in this series as superb. By the the third volume (volume six) in this omnibus I was wooing and gasping during and at the end of some chapters. Thank god I switched to the omnibus and won't have to write and manage a review for each individual volume, and so can use the time and energy saved to immerse myself in this immersive immense work! I am a Gantz-convert already, for life! 8.5 out of 12, Four Stars again. 2024 read
This series always throws off-putting stuff at the reader even as it pulls one in with its action and adventure. In addition to the sexism, misogyny, and fan service carried over from last volume, this volume goes hard on homophobia.
Problematic but addictive. I guess this plops into the guilty pleasure category.
Very intriguing still and a lot of fun. Nice art, the quality of the illustrations is above average and those little 3 in 1 omnibus are really affordable too. Not sure if all those illustrations of half naked women between chapters are necessary though... Anyway the story for itself is worth reading and I will continue with this series. Book 3 already somewhere in the mail!
This book is really weird. The aliens are weird. The paneling is weird. The guns are weird (delayed shots?). The characters are weird. The whole concept is weird. But somehow it keeps me reading. Even if all that is said over a couple pages is heavy breathing from action scenes.
Same story over and over. I liked the aliens, but this book consisted of the same. I would have continued this series if women weren't depicted in such a grotesque way.
Kisimoto (Girl Kei) left Boy Kei's apartment, after he yelled at her for not having sex with him despite allowing her to stay with him for free (while vocally obsessing over Kato being amazing).
Kei is basically preoccupied with having sex, and since his character is 15, maybe I can accept this? Though I could do without the entitlement to it.
In some ways Gantz feels repetitive; a bunch of new people are teleported to the room, and then are sent to fight monsters. Most of the people experience complete denial, even while fighting, and I'm still amazed at the lack of urgency and willingless characters seem to have.
Kato wont kill the monsters, but the manga makes it seem like the people who enjoy it are depraved and will lose their humanity. But none of the monsters are human or human like. And you basically have to kill them or they'll kill you.
But I am much more pleased with the progression of the characters, but I dont know how much longer I can deal with people being in denial.
These stories are so much to take in, but one thing I’m absolutely loving is the diversity and the pure whimsy of the antagonists. We have each “baddie” doing something completely unique, and I really enjoyed the one in the latter half (Giant Buddhist statues) as they are both menacing and reminded me of what I used to think as a kid with statues that big. I don’t think I’ve been drawn to a story like this in a while.
You're a mean one, Mr Gantz. Did not get worse. Monsters are picking up in scale, the titties are great, the violence is BLAAAAMMMMMMM. KRAAAKCCCCCKKKKKKKK
GOD gantz is weird lmfao but it’s super fun. It just sucks that all of the sexual content prevents me from recommending it to anyone :/. I get that it changes over time, but it’s still there. The character development is interesting too. In general, it’s nearly impossible to stop reading gantz.
These stories are pretty darn consistent. Excellent story, well-written, really cool premise, and a painfully juvenile treatment of women. I could even get behind it if it was just the main character–he's 15, and a juvenile–but it's not; it's the way the women themselves are designed and used by the author.
Feels a little too much in terms of fan service. I was excited with the first omnibus but now I just feel let down like I’m forced to read the third one to see if I get hyped for the story again.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Absoluta machistada, I can’t look away from it anymore. The author doesn’t let the women ch do ANYTHING other than be sex objects for the mmc and to be displayed at the beginning of chapters. And it’s fine to have women portrayed salaciously at the opening of chapters, but NOT the female Kei who literally is SUFFERING from r*pe attempts and sexual assault from the men in the story because of her body. Don’t use that at the beginning of the chapters, are you kidding me?? Just have anon women on these openings tu. The Lara Croft woman (who legitimately IS Lara Croft btw) introduced in this one, who feels badass, legit only consents to have sex with the mmc and that’s it. Then she wants to go out with him. That’s it. Nothing during the battle, nothing ever. And female Kei is portrayed as “damsel in distress” as ever, even if this is her 3rd round in the games. LET HER BE BRAVE! The “oh Japan” excuse doesn’t work anymore, never did really.
Also, my other issue is that the entire format/plot rn is just rinse and repeat. If we’d learn more about the world and what’s going on, even if it’s just a fkn snippet, that would be great. But it’s taking too long imo, and I know I know that we’re STILL just in the beginning stages. The amount of time it took me to pick this back up and read the last 3rd really attests to how I’m feeling about this xD The last chapter was ofc where we could learn something new about how all this works and how it impacts the “real world”, and ofc ends with a cliffhanger. MAYBE (and that’s a BIG maybe xD) I’ll read just the next chapter online, but probs not. I’m just gonna let it be.
I hate the main character por sus machistadas and I cannot get behind him, or even attempt to root for him. He’s also SUCH a Mary Sue, which is boring on its own. Completed with his personality? Absolutely not.
I’ll stick to the movie, thank you ✌🏼

Ok ok, starting to really dig what's going on here!!!
Even though you basically get the bare bones of what the story is and not much more, may be a way to attack this story and if that's the case i like that and think the idea is very good and original. If its not its still really really good, just hope the big reveal isn't dependent on it. Kinda hard to write this as I dont want to spoil anything. I'll just say right now, the idea and ideas in the story I love. The idea of the suit and different guns I really like and this almost running man like story where after you do what you do you can leave, I am really into this story. The characters, the art and especially the fight scenes and original things they have to fight. Really can't say enough good things about Gantz so far.
More of the same from the first. A frustrating mix of genuinely good sci-fi action/ horror and completely unnecessary (and problematic) sexuality, with plenty of fan servicey artwork in the beginning of chapters. I’m not sure why the writer chose to mix these so much, as the sexual elements just bring the pacing to a halt. Also Kurono is still a mostly insufferable prick, with him kicking Kishimoto out of his place for not sleeping with him. I get a redemptive arc is being set up for him but my god he’s thoroughly unlikable.
I'm finished with the second Omnibus and completed volume six in the series. Gantz is filled with everything: relationships, speculations, gore, sex, brutality, and uncertainty. It's has a bit of everything and keeps me guessing what is going to happen next. I'm on to the third Omnibus. I loved the Gantz anime movie and I want to see if the series matches the uniqueness. I'll let you know about the next one.
Reading this volume, I got a bit annoyed at how difficult it is to discern who is speaking a lot of the time. The situations are often illustrated from quite a distance away (super wide shots) and they all wear identical suits + and many have identical hair color. The action is often similarly hard to decipher.
I don't know if the illustrations decreased in quality and clarity at this point or if I got stupider and blinder.
I really enjoyed this omnibus. I thought it improved on the first omnibus, however I still can’t give it 5 stars due to the weird relationship this series has with women. They are all either weak losers, or objectified sex symbols. It gets old pretty quick to be honest and is a bit of a disappointment. Also Kei, a 15 year old teenager bangs a 26 year old. Just saying. It’s a little weird and creepy.
They finish the creepy bird creature run. Main character is mad horny and can’t stop himself. They get sent back in with a new crew and fight some big big baddies. Total seinen. Boobs and gore all over the place. Quick quick read with all the actions. Mind numbing but fun. I’ll be reading the rest.
i’m really starting to love the dynamic between Kei and Kato it’s definitely added more to the series as a whole so far. the fan service is SUPER unnecessary at times but Oku always has fantastic pacing in everything he writes so that helps. I’d also KILL for the singles because reading it in the omnibus format blows.
I recognize it's a product of its time and wow for everything that I saw in Berserk. this takes the lurid sexual stuff to an absolute height lol. It's crazy that Hiroya Oku is able to take such an interesting story, interesting characters, a mystery that is yet to be solved, and pile in gratuitous sex and violence. Well I'm game for more!
Of course I finished this quickly! I tried to savor it but I couldnt! the irony the gore and just trying to figure out what's going on and Kei's growth! and who did Kato see?!?! I am just gonna watch the Netflix movie again I need it
