Look, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a big fan of poetry. Despite loving studying certain aspects of literature throughout my education and having fun exploring different genres, poetry isn’t something that’s ever necessarily caught my eye. Some poems take me off guard completely and I fall in love with them, but, most of the
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review

I wanted to love this poetry collection by Mona Soorma like I loved You Make Me Spill My Ink , but unfortunately, I had set such high expectations that were left unmet in the end.

Part of the reason why I gave UNREQUITED three-stars is because I wasn't able to connect with the poems in the way I was able to connect with the poems in YMMSMI as UNREQUITED mainly focuses on romance, being in love with someone, old heartbreak, h

This collection of poems from Mona Soorma is a seemingly endless journey of sadness and I thought at one point that I would be unable to plod on towards the final verse. However, the poet’s skilfully imaginative use of words and metaphor in so many of her verses managed to keep me reading, feeling emotional and wanting more. So many of the poems are about fading hope, times past, lost love and a broken heart that one wonders when recovery can ever be found. But there are lighter moments to be fo ...more

A Review – by James VandenBrink

When I first decided to write a review of Mona Soorma’s book UNREQUITED – Poetry From The Hurting Heart, I was a little apprehensive. I take these things seriously and I haven’t written a “book report” since about grade ten. I have been reading some of Mona’s poetry on Google + poetry communities and I really liked it. Now I read her whenever I can find her. I had opportunity to read this book free on the net but I love a good book so I bought it for myself. The m

These are the poems of a writer growing rapidly in craft. Ms. Soorma has a serious voice, exploring the joys and sorrows of love. At times, the ache in her words is almost palpable: "Missing each whisper and shiver / And smile and tear." At other times, these poems reflect a more casual moment: "A random wisp of a straggling memory." And maybe my favorite line in the book: "In my dreams / You always come to me / Riding darkness." But ultimately, these are poems of resilience and hope: "I keep my ...more

A symphony of longing & universal truth

Rated 4/5 - An ode to the butterflies of thought that permeate a grieving heart, laid bare with careful, tender hands by a poet of great depth.

Open and without reservation, stream of consciousness poetry and bittersweet experience, hope and anguish, that may well resonate in hearts that embraced the flame

Looking forward to more...

There were poems I liked more and there were poems I liked less, but in general I did like them. Of course they were slightly repetitive, but the title should have already given you a hint about that - poems from the hurting heart totally gives it away ;D

So much to do….so little time!
A million dreams and not enough moments to make them come true, but I go on, for I never want to feel that I did not use all that I had, to do all that I could.
Words have always been close to my heart, and poetry my greatest love. It was destiny perhaps, that brought me into the world of social media in mid-2014, where Manic Sylph was born, a name that I chose to desc
“How it hurts to see you
Achingly beyond my craving touch!

Perhaps, that's the agony
Of a bird with a broken wing
The world seemingly at her feet
Yet not;
And nary a song to sing”
“From a place of darkness
Stars watch the wounded dreams sigh
On their bed of aches and broken skin
But they are dreams, and all they know is how to rise”
