Beyond the Secret Howff

A legendary figure in the bothying scene, Allister ( Ashie ) Brebner fell in love with the Scottish hills as a boy. In 1963, he gave up his factory job to co-found Highland Safaris and he never looked back. In his first book, he shares anecdotes of hillwalking, the winter skiing season, building the famous Secret Howff and delivering sheep in a minibus to make ends meet. Ashie writes with honesty and insight about the magnificence of the Scottish outdoors, joining a tradition of writers inspired by the natural landscape. Alongside the celebration of nature is a warm, witty account of a life spent pursuing the freedom of the mountains.

The (fascinating) story about the Sluggain Howff only forms a small part of this wonderful wee book about a life that, at its time, was pioneering. A must-read for anyone interested in the history of Scottish climbing, mountaineering and life out-of-doors.
