A priceless reminder of what "living intensely" can mean. This actually seems to be a pretty rare book, my edition was given as a birthday present, bought in a used book store in Notting Hill about fifteen years ago.

The biography brilliantly portrays Van Gogh's life story in a logical chronology with his letters and prints of his paintings to create an incisive and three-dimensional impression of the artist. Reading his letters, I came away thinking that Vincent would have been one hell of a novelist. Everything that he put into his paintings (all he had, all he was) he also put into his letters. At times the emotion is so raw, the quality of thought so crystaline, you can hardly bear to read on.
