A new collection by Newfoundland poet Agnes Walsh, her first since the release of Going Around With Bachelors (2007). Born and brought up in Placentia, Newfoundland, Walsh studied folklore in Georgia (USA), before returning home and taking to writing works founded in her love of her ancestral place. Oderin is an homage to Walsh's mother, who signed her letters, Love from your loving mother--Mother."
A short but impactful book of poetry that marries the Newfoundland spirit with the bleakness of dementia. The water, isolation, and strength are all prevalent in this collection.
I want to hug this book, every poem in it, the woman who wrote them and the woman who inspired them. A short collection that is tender, evocative and gripping.
After finishing this lyrical collection of iambic poetry, I found myself considering a lot of the complex and nuanced themes of motherhood. As someone who is new to reading Canadian poetry, I found this book to be especially beautiful where old Newfoundland speech is employed. It was a fast and pleasant read, and I would recommend it to readers who are interested in lyrical writing and descriptive word use.
