Fr Ed Broom gives wonderful spiritual guidance in his book. I will definitely be applying his words of wisdom to my interior life. I really love, "Meekness is not weakness but rather a powerful virtue" and when he talked about when you feel tempted to complain think of five things to be grateful for instead. What a great outlook on life! I seriously cannot praise this book enough. Go read it; you'll love it!
Fr. Broom’s short book ‘From Humdrum to Holy’ is packed with great advice on becoming holier. I absolutely loved the attractive cover image, title, and bite size chapters; I wasn’t as impressed with the ordering of the material; for example, why place the formation of conscience, sin, and confession at towards the end of a book on holiness? St. Ignatius in his ‘Spiritual Exercises’ certainly would not have ordered the chapters that way, and this book seems to draw substantially on Ignatian spirituality. Another drawback (in my less than humble opinion) would be that the book offers too much advice (without sufficient depth in some cases) and fails to encourage the reader to only pick and choose between the different suggestions. Any lay person who tried to do everything this book suggests would quickly burn out, and that is not a great recipe for a balanced holiness. Some elements are essential (conversion, penance, prayer, sacraments…) and others are optional (which types of prayer, how much adoration, and which good works to practice...). Anyway, with these caveats in mind, this book may certainly be a helpful guide in learning how to grow in a deeper relationship with the Lord.
