I've been an avid student of Egyptology since the age of six, at which point I began teaching myself the ancient language.
A career in the field wasn't meant to be, but my interest hasn't waned a bit in the intervening years.
This book is so much more than a guidebook for travelers, though it serves admirably as one; it is a wonderful concise history, readable while not skimping on detail, and abundantly illustrated.
The tomb diagrams were invaluable help in a class project once. I told Bill Murnane that story when I handed him my well-work Penguin Guide to sign. He'd never thought of it as a scholarly work, not in comparison to his other books, but my words made him reevaluate that impression.
I highly recommend this book for both novices and experienced fans of Ancient Egypt.
